Product Description: In this second edition of Adult Development and Aging: Biopsychosocial Perspectives, Susan Krauss Whitbourne makes an important contribution to the educational mission of the field by providing accurate and current information and a positive perspective on the years of adulthood and old age. Whitbourne explores the art of successful aging, focusing on how individuals can take an active role in the aging process and make it a rewarding developmental period, filled with vitality and creativity.
Now revised with substantially updated references and recent findings, the second edition combines both research and applied perspectives, and integrates information from the biological, cognitive, and psychosocial perspectives as they relate to the middle and later years of adulthood. The text presents a complete picture of the aging process, with enough information on both adulthood and later adulthood to allow instructors to alter their emphasis according to the needs and interests of students.

Product Description: In the next 20 years 75 million Americans will be reaching retirement age. To deal with this sea change, Rabbi Schachter-Shalomi (Paradigm Shift, Jason Aronson, 1993) introduces the concept of "eldering," or mentoring, each other in the years ahead. He contends that we are at the cutting edge of the next stage in our evolution and that elders will bring us into this more compassionate, intuitive, and caring era. In Part 1 of the book, Schachter-Shalomi recommends meditation, exercise, and spiritual healing to help individuals enter their later years, while in Part 2 he speaks to our limited perceptions of death.

Product Description: This groundbreaking sociological analysis is based on three research projects that followed over 800 people from their adolescence through old age. Subjects were drawn from the Harvard Grant study of white males, the Inner City study of non-delinquent males and the Terman Women study of gifted females, begun respectively in 1921, 1930 and 1911. In all three studies, subjects were interviewed at regular intervals over time, a design that prevented observations from being skewed by the distortions of memory and allowed for analyses that distinguished effect from cause. Vaillant (The Natural History of Alcoholism), a psychiatrist and professor at the Harvard Medical School, brings a nuanced point of view and an acceptance of the project's limitations. (Those followed were not randomly selected and were overwhelmingly Caucasian.)
