Product Description:
Starred Review. As a former senior producer at Oxygen Media and
author of their "Ask Princess" advice column, Kirsch specializes in
helping young women face the challenges of life in the real world.
Here she's compiled information and advice in a common-sensible,
funny and easy-to-read primer on all aspects of life for women in
their 20s and 30s, deftly organized into 10 chapters covering
health, work, money, manners, friends, love, family, spirit, home
and fashion. Nothing is off limits, from "Home Ec for Modern Times"
(including the rationale behind nude tub-scrubbing) to romance and
its subsidiaries (such as "Non-Goal-Oriented sex"). |

Product Description:
Despite scientific evidence to the contrary, as far as the health
care profession is concerned the standard operating design of the
human body is male. So when a book comes along as beautifully
written and endlessly informative as Natalie Angier's Woman: An
Intimate Geography, it's a cause for major celebration. Written
with whimsy and eloquence, her investigation into female physiology
draws its inspiration not only from scientific and medical sources
but also from mythology, history, art, and literature, layering
biological factoids with her own personal encounters and arcane
anecdotes from the history of science. Who knew, for example, that
the clitoris--with 8,000 nerve fibers--packs double the pleasure of
the penis; that the gene controlling cellular sensitivity to male
androgens, ironically enough, resides on the X-chromosome; or that
stress hormones like cortisol and corticosterone are the true
precursors of friendship? |

Product Description:
Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10:
Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's
Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the
laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine
is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the
"truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to
cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them
twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The
Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular
cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have
record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear
size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly
strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with
a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres
of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else.

unavailable edition of this title. |

Product Description: Just
had a baby? Lie down, rest your weary womb, and muster up a rousing
cheer! (Shh! Don't wake the baby!) Now, from the author of The
Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, comes the book all new moms
have been waiting for, whether they know it or not. Vicki Iovine
talks turkey ... and stitches, and weight loss, and depression, and
sex (trying it for the first time after labor and delivery?
"Inebriate and Lubricate"). Vicki--yeah, I know I'm calling her by
her first name but after reading this book you'll be on a first-name
basis with her, too--is funny, informative, and utterly (udderly?)
irreverent. New mothers have never had it so good. |

Product Description:
Would-be mothers looking for precise, accurate information from a
reputable source will appreciate this mammoth pregnancy guide from
the celebrated Mayo Clinic. The volume actually provides much more
information than most parents will need: week by week accounts of
the baby’s development, entries on how pregnancy can be affected by
dozens of previous health conditions (such as HIV and diabetes),
self-care tips for side effects like nausea and back pain, sidebars
that explain the difference between identical and fraternal twins,
etc. But the book contains at least one feature that most pregnant
women will find indispensable: charts that indicate how to handle
"troublesome signs and symptoms" during each three week period. For
example, if a woman has slight spotting during the first four weeks
of pregnancy, the chart tells her to notify a doctor during her next
hospital visit. But if she has any bleeding at all during weeks 29
to 32, the chart indicates that she should tell her doctor
immediately. Another stellar feature is the book’s even-handed
series of "decision guides," which help parents make those hard (and
even guilt-inducing) choices about breastfeeding, circumcision and
whether or not to go back to work. Some parents may find the book’s
cool, no-nonsense tone intimidating, or even scary, but when
deciding what to do about mid-term cramps or pain, most readers will
find great reassurance this volume’s carefully vetted facts. |
