Product Description:
Starred Review. Labor and delivery nurse Kropp was troubled when
she recognized several years back that women coming into the
hospital to give birth were both ill-prepared and more anxious than
ever. These women had read all the latest books and had taken
classes, but with so much information available they were trusting
writers and 'experts' more than they trusted themselves. Kropp found
that the humor and joy of pregnancy had been lost, and set out to
help remedy the situation. Her book is a refreshing mix of medical
information and helpful, nonjudgmental advice, which urges readers
to inform themselves but also to relax and enjoy the special time
and anticipation of pregnancy. |

Product Description:
McCarthy, 1994 Playmate of the Year, actress (Scream 3;
Baywatch; etc.) and former host of MTV's Singled Out,
gave birth to her first child in 2002. Her pregnancy wasn't
pretty—and she wants to tell readers all about it. At the outset,
she tells them, "If you bought this book, you are already aware of
my frankness when it comes to certain things—anatomy and bodily
functions among them. If someone gave this book to you as a gift and
you've never heard of me, apologies to you!" She goes on to recount
the nitty-gritty of pregnancy in all its gory detail, covering
morning sickness, hormonal rage, cravings, hemorrhoids, "engorged"
breasts, gas, hot flashes, fainting spells, weight gain, acne, water
retention and, finally, labor. McCarthy is undeniably crass but
funny, and her candor and self-deprecation are refreshing. Each
brief, chatty chapter focuses on a different—and awful—facet of
pregnancy, with McCarthy relating personal anecdotes and usually
winding down by reassuring women they're not alone. McCarthy's tales
are, for the most part, a hoot, though they may offend more uptight
readers. |

Product Description:
Founding member and former president of the Midwives Alliance of
North America and author of Spiritual Midwivery, Gaskin offers
encouragement and practical advice in her upbeat and informative
book on natural childbirth. Since the mid-1970s, Gaskin and the
midwives in her practice on a Summertown, Tenn., commune known as
"The Farm," have attended over 2,200 natural births. Gaskin, who
learned the rudiments of her gentle birthing technique from the
Mayans in Guatemala, has helped bring attention to the method's
remarkably low rate of morbidity and medical intervention. Couples
considering natural childbirth will get inspirational coaxing from
more than a dozen first-person narratives shared by the author's
clients. Gaskin decries what she sees as Western medicine's focus on
pain during birth, arguing that natural birthing can not only be
euphoric and blissful but also orgasmic (a survey of 150 natural
birthing women "found thirty-two who reported experiencing at least
one orgasmic birth"). The second half of Gaskin's book deals with
the practical side of natural birthing, including how to avoid
standard medical interventions such as epidurals, episiotomies and
even prenatal amniocentesis that may be unnecessary, even dangerous,
to mother or child. While this may not be the definitive guide to
natural childbirth, it is a comfortable and supportive read for
women who want to trust their bodies to do what comes naturally. |

Product Description: The
Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one guide to pregnancy
from William and Martha Sears, creators of the concept of
"attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters represents a
month, and deals with physical and emotional changes, describes the
growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns. The authors also
focus on nutrition, exercise, information and support for home
births and birthing centers, traveling while pregnant, how to avoid
episiotomy, and so on. The approach is gentle, thorough, and
includes more information than some month-by-month guides, which
makes The Pregnancy Book an excellent choice for pregnant
couples. |

Product Description: Having
a baby can and should be one of the most joyful experiences of a
woman's life. While there are hundreds of books that provide
information on how to ensure the development of a healthy baby, few
of them dedicate more than a few pages to the nourishment of the
mother herself during this physically and emotionally demanding
time. It is rarely discussed, but women commonly experience a wide
variety of ailments during the postpartum period, from depression to
anxiety, backache, and loss of libido.
A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health is the
first book by physicians that is devoted entirely to telling women
how they can prevent postpartum problems and attain optimum health
after the delivery of their babies. Elements of the program, which
is meant to be adopted during-or, if possible, before-pregnancy,
include diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise,
hormone-balancing, the use of medicinal herbs, and conventional
medications. Developed by the authors in clinical practice, this
program has a proven track record in helping women to avoid and
overcome postpartum difficulties. |
