Experimenting with Spring 2015's Stripe Styles

Experimenting with Spring 2015's Stripe Styles

Whether horizontal, vertical, thin, thick, black and white or in living colour, stripes make a graphic statement, day or night.

Stripes have continued to dominate since 1960s, when Marc Jacobs paraded models in 1960s-inspired looks that included horizontal, vertical and zigzag patterns in simple shades of black, white and oxblood. From a simple striped white T-shirt worn over not much else, to the head-to-toe sequined striped gown, Jacobs created jailbait, jailhouse and high society appeal all in one show.

Think rainbow brights on wearable t-shirt dresses. You can definitely mix stripes, but keep these two rules in mind: Stick to one color palette, and vary the width of the lines. Although, stripes have the potential to become tiresome after a while. But, Alexa Chung's quirky, color blocked style is decidedly above the fray.

This year spring has in stored for you the hard-edged stripes.  You can try a leather skirt, Faux Leather Sleeved Striped Dress or stay on the trend track by sticking to an A-line cut.

Body Frame vs. Stripes

  • If You have a tummy, Vertical or diagonal lines draw the eye up and down, creating the look of a skinnier torso.

  • If You Have a Straight Figure, youll look great in horizontal stripes, especially across the hips. Wherever you wear them, you'll appear wider and curvier.

  • If You Have Full Hips and Thighs, avoid horizontal stripes only below the waist. tops with lines that run east to west broaden shoulders, which balances out a more voluptuous lower body. Diagonals? Wear them with abandon. Chunky stripes do have magnifying powers. But in this case they work because the jacket evens out your bottom half. A thigh-hiding skirt and ladylike accents help too. You can try striped Pants for Full Hips and Thighs with a Floral Blouse. Opt for skinny railroad stripes to slim and lengthen the legs.

  • If You Have a Large Bust, You can pull off lines in any direction on the bottom, but unbroken horizontal stripes up top can amplify your chest. To streamline, wear similar shades above and below. Try a tee with a solid colour in the center, to downplay the bust. Horizontal stripes on the bottom keep a top-heavy figure in proportion.

This season designers are using stripes to steal attention away from the transparent details, though, we admit, this is still a style statement for the brave.
