Genetically modified foodstuffs approved

(January 12, 2004)

Berlin. A new law will in the future regulate the coexistence of conventional and genetically modified foods. The draft was presented by agriculture minister Kuenast today; she called it a success for consumers and farmers. For consumers, the new law will increase safety, she said, because there will be iron-clad rules for growing and labelling genetically modified products. This would also, the minister continued, give farmers reliable basic conditions. Farmers' league chair Sonnleitner demanded stricter liability rules for growers of genetically modified foods.
