Ozone Warning Issued to Seven Districts in Seoul
June 01, 2004

As summer is just around the corner with the start of June, hot and humid weather is forecasted to continue for some time. In addition, an ozone warning was issued to seven districts in Seoul - including Yangchoen-gu, Gangseo-gu, and Guro-gu - on Tuesday for the first time this year. An ozone warning is issued when it is very hot with little wind and much sunlight.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported that the mercury climbed between 23 degrees and 29 degrees throughout the nation on Tuesday, up 2-3 degrees from the previous day.

As hot weather arrives earlier than usual, female students jump into a fountain to cool themselves in front of Seoul City Hall on Tuesday.

The mercury is forecasted to climb higher Wednesday, with the daytime temperatures in Seoul rising to 29 degrees and the Chungchong Province to 30 degrees, heralding the beginning of summer.

The KMA also said that this hot weather will continue until Thursday, but will let up somewhat from Friday. The temperatures in the Gyeongsang Province will be a bit lower during this time with midday highs of 26-28 degrees in Daegu and 21-23 degrees in Busan.

Along with the hot weather, as the ozone density increases, affected by the rise in nitrogen oxide such as car emission, the health and environment research center of the Seoul Metropolitan Government issued an ozone warning and recommended that people with respiratory problems or old and young people stay inside. He also said that a ozone warning is likely to be issued on Wednesday and Thursday.
