Green tea in links to
leukaemia cure
Reported May 31, 2009
Green tea has long been known for its health benefits and it has just been
confirmed that recent tests carried out in the US have shown that a
particular antioxidant found in the green stuff can reduce cancerous cells
in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia sufferers by more than a third.
The dramatic decrease would mean that the incurable cancer would spread far
slower and allow patients to live with it for years longer than previously
thought.
Back in March it was reported that women in China who took part in cancer
tests were 90% less likely to get breast cancer if they regularly consumed
green tea and mushrooms.
However, more research is needed to find out if these benefits would apply
to women in more developed countries, as breast cancer rates in China is
five times lower than that seen in the Western world. Breast cancer is
however on the increase as the Chinese population steers away from healthy
foods like green tea and sway to rich meat products that are popular in the
West, showing further links between the deadly disease and unhealthy eating
habits.
The latest findings are another step forward in the worldwide fight against
cancer and the study in Minnesota was overseen by blood specialist Dr Tait
Shanafelt who said: “Many patients saw regression to some degree.”
