Dominica medical facility for health care

Roseau is the capital and largest city of Dominica. With a population of 14,847 , it is a small and compact urban settlement, located within the Saint George parish and surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River and Morne Bruce. Built on the site of the ancient Kalinago Indian village of Sairi, it is the oldest and most important urban settlement on the island.
It is located on the west (leeward) coast of Dominica, and is a combination of modern and colonial (French Style) architecture.
Princess Margaret Hospital is the major trauma facility of Dominica, located in the northern Goodwill part of the capital, Roseau,to the northeast of Lindo Park, north of the Botanical Gardens of Roseau, southwest of Clifton Dupigny Technical College and south of Stock Farm Prison. There are approximately 15 house/resident doctors and 12 specialists.[2]The hospital has a four-bed Intensive Care unit. A hyperbaric chamber exists, but is not (as of March 2007) operational. The Ambulance service is operated by the Fire Department, with approximately 6 ambulances.
The main hospital in Dominica, the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) is in dire need of critical medical supplies. The hospital administrator recently informed the nursing staff and health officials that it was just a matter of days before the supplies ran out. The supplies are as basic as bandages, gauze and injections.
The government has indicated that it is no position to provide the necessary funding to replenish the quick dwindling supply. The officials fear that the health situation in Dominica will completely collapse if the situation is not remedied within the next few weeks.
In 2000, Dominica’s health system was rated number 35 in the world by the United Nations, but with Dominica in the throes of its worst economic crisis in decades health along with all the other public sectors have been severely affected.
In view of the imminent health crisis facing Dominica, the Dominican in collaboration with the National Development Fund is making an unprecedented appeal to its readership to assist in averting disaster in the health system.
