Anti-AIDS Activists Block Kaliningrad City Hall,
Detained by Police

From 10 to 20 activists of
Anti-AIDS organization attempted takeover of the
city administration in the West Russian enclave of
Kaliningrad. They had chained themselves to the
doors with handcuffs, Echo of Moscow radio station
reported.
The action members were protesting against the
local authorities� policy regarding HIV-infected
persons, who do not receive enough medical
treatment in the city.
The action slogan says �Our deaths are your
shame!� City administration and medical
directorate officials failed to hold negotiations
with the action members. The protestors were later
detained by police.
Of all the Russian regions, Kaliningrad maintains
one of the higest recorded incidents of the HIV
infection. The relative index of HIV circulation
in the region is 2.4 times higher than the Russian
average. Currently, there are over 4,500
HIV-infected citizens in the region, Interfax news
agency reported, quoting the local medical
directorate. Most of the infected, over 3.200
people, live in the city. The biggest age group
infected is in the 20-29 range (58.7 percent).
Most (74.7 percent) became infected after having
used drugs intravenously, the agency reported.
