Avoid
Fish that contain high levels of mercury should be avoided. These
types of fish include: shark, swordfish, kink mackerel, fresh tuna, sea
bass, Gulf coast oysters, halibut, marlin, pike, white croaker and
tilefish. Raw shellfish pose concern for everybody and they should be
avoided altogether during pregnancy.
Raw fish during pregnancy because it may contain
parasites such as
flukes or worms. The FDA reports the greatest risk of seafood-borne
illnesses is from raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly clams,
oysters and mussels from contaminated waters. Bacteria such as Salmonella,
Staphylococcus aureus, and viral infections (including hepatitis A) have
all been found in raw seafood.
Eating the same type of fish or shellfish more than once a week.
Fish from contaminated lakes and rivers that may be exposed to high
levels of polychlorinated biphyenyls.
Contact the local health department or Environmental Protection Agency to
determine which fish are safe to eat in your area. Remember, this is
regarding fish caught in local waters and not fish from your local grocery
store.
