Healthy living key to fertility,
say experts

Fertility experts say new evidence pointing to the
relationship between a healthy lifestyle and
fertility is good news for couples.
Scientists, doctors
and researchers involved in reproductive medicine
are gathering in Adelaide for the Fertility
Society of Australia's four-day conference.
The conference chairman, Doctor Jeremy Thompson,
says one in six Australian couples experiences
infertility, but the influence of fitness and good
nutrition could help turn that around.
"A healthy lifestyle is being promoted as a way of
attempting infertility treatment as a first case
option," he said.
"This is good because it is obviously very low
impact if you can modify your lifestyle and may
allow people to get pregnant without requiring
significant amounts of manipulative treatment."
Dr Thompson says new research backs the theory.
"We're becoming more and more aware that health
and lifestyle impacts on reproduction and
reproductive activity, so that infertility can be
attributed to lifestyles that peoples choose," he
said.
"Unhealthy lifestyles can actually be associated
with increased infertility."
