Doctors urge people to get
measles shots, Australia
September 11, 2004
The South Australian Health
Department is urging people to check that they have been immunised against
the measles.
The department fears that there could be a measles outbreak in Adelaide,
after a young man returned from overseas with the disease.
Dr Rod Givney, from the communicable diseases branch, says there is a
generation of people born after 1966 who are especially at risk.
"Not everyone was getting their measles shots as kids," he said.
"Because of the partial immunisation of a bit of the population the age at
which people got measles was pushed higher and higher."
Dr Givney says people born after 1966 should see their GP for a free measles
vaccination.
