11 October, 2004

A woman in Russias northern republic of Komi discovered mercury in a package of juice she was about to drink, leading to a city-wide scare, with packages of the juice being confiscated from major stores. After alerting the regional health center in the city of Syktyvkar, the State Sanitary Inspector for the region, Tatyana Petunina, confirmed that there were in fact traces of mercury in the 0.2 liter package of apple-peach nectar the woman had purchased, the Interfax news agency reported. Regional authorities have taken the product off shelves of major supermarkets in the city, and are testing Lyubimy Sad brand nectars for traces of mercury, the news agency reported, citing the Federal Consumer Rights Inspection Service. Regional doctors, meanwhile, are telling city residents to avoid the drinking the juice, and the company will have to stop production until further orders. Earlier, another woman in a nearby town discovered drops of the toxic metal after pouring Moya Semya brand nectar into a glass. But while specialists confirmed traces of mercury in the package of juice the woman had bought, director general of Nidan Foods, which produces the juice, called the incident sabotage and stressed that mercury was found in a single container.
