Silver Ring begins binding
Brits tonight
25 June, 2004
Ethan Jacobs will attend a
splashy light show tonight near London, but he won't reach for the silver
ring as an Ohio Township sex-abstinence group formally launches its U.K.
tour.
"I'm fine with my own self-discipline," said Ethan, 16, son of American
expatriates in Woking, Surrey, near London.
His mother, Paula, helped organize the Silver Ring Thing show planned
tonight at Holy Trinity Church in Claygate, Surrey. It is the first of six
Silver Ring shows, which encourage teens to abstain from sex until marriage,
scheduled in United Kingdom and Ireland over the next two weeks.
The group based at Christ Church of Grove Farm has performed such gigs for
years in the States but never to the kind of attention it's receiving in
Great Britain. When plans for the trip were announced, British tabloids
swarmed to the story, labeling the Silver Ring Thing's high-tech shows
"virginity carnivals."
