Alexa Towersey is highly accomplished Pilates expert, Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach, in conversation with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your journey that took you to the top of the world of fitness training ?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: My journey in the health and fitness industry has spanned over 15 years to date, and continues to evolve. I started on a mission for muscles in my teens to escape my “Alexa Annorexa” nickname at school, progressing to body double roles for top American fitness models with an emphasis on the aesthetic element of fitness. I then embraced a new challenge in learning a new sport and qualifying for the world half ironman champs where there is a big emphasis on psychological strength. Following the loss of both of my parents to lifestyle related diseases, has me now more than ever, committed to helping others understand and embrace being fit, healthy and educated. At this moment in time, I’m so grateful that I’m in a place where I’m surrounded by positive people, where I’m consistently inspired to be better.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Elaborate about your bio signature modulation- “scientific spot specific fat reduction”?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: Based on the theory that where we store fat is down to our unique hormonal profile, Bio Signature can explain why some men develop man boobs or a spare Tyre, and why some women have slender stomachs but thunder thighs. It’s essentially scientific, spot specific fat reduction, but not in the way you think.

The Bio Signature assessment involves taking skin-fold measurements with calipers at 12 different points on the body. Different areas of fat correspond to different hormones. The individual readings identify areas where there is a disproportionate amount of fat, and thus identify potential hormonal imbalances in the body. We can work to reduce the imbalances using different types of training, nutrition, supplements and lifestyle modifications, allowing for spot specific fat reduction. It’s definitely more of an ongoing education, and lifestyle based program.

A high proportion of belly fat indicates high levels of the stress hormone cortisol – it could be down to a food intolerance, over-training, dehydration or lack of sleep. Fat on the bottom and legs indicates too much oestrogen, and can be addressed by including lots of cruciferous veges in the diet, avoiding soy products and using natural, organic skin care.

Back fat and muffin tops suggest carbohydrates are not well tolerated. Just by looking at clients, a good Bio Signature Practitioner is able to gain insight into what a client needs to do to reach their own goals with their own specific body type.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Share your exercise routine that you do to maintain such a bikini perfect physique?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: My body definitely responds differently to training than it did in my teens and twenties. Stress management and finding a good balance between my “hard” days in the gym, and my recovery days or “easy” days is much more important now. I have been in the industry a long time and I know what works for my own body type. I’m all about training smart, not necessarily long. I typically do 3 days in the gym doing full body circuits and metabolic conditioning using free weights, kettle bells, plyometrics and sprints, and then my “recovery” days include a mix of power yoga, hot yoga and Pilates. I also walk everywhere, since I’m still finding my way around Sydney, so I get a lot of incidental exercise.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your diet? Do you take a particular fixed regulated diet comprising of nutrients and vitamins to keep you in perfect health?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: Just as with training, nutrition is very individual and what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for someone else. I’m pretty consistent on a day to day basis, which means that I don’t need to revert to extreme measures every time I want to get in a bikini. I’m not a fan of calorie counting or deprivation, as it makes food a stressor. The key is consistency, and just sticking to eating real, unprocessed, whole foods. And I don’t drink, which makes a huge difference. If there is one piece of advice I could give, it would be to get a food intolerance test done, as just because a food is “healthy” doesn’t mean it is healthy for you. I do take a few supplements, mostly to support having a healthy digestive system – probiotics, digestive enzymes, fish oil, Magnesium, and I’m a huge fan of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar which I add to warm water every morning to start my day.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your motivation to take a multi-faceted personality of a fitness model, personal trainer, media personality and nutritional expert ?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: Attitude is everything. This is the philosophy I live by, and the one in which I teach my clients to embrace – both inside the gym and in their everyday lives. I want to empower women to be fit and strong – psychological strength is just as important as physical strength. Fitness means different things to different people, but if you can develop a good work ethic in the gym, it will translate into every other part of your life. When it comes to me, I’m far more concerned with genuine fitness, as opposed to the appearance of fitness. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so I like that I get to challenge the status quo, and hopefully inspire others to do the same.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: I’m always in the gym, or out and about running around, so i’ve never been into makeup, and I think that goes a long way in being able to keep my skin clear and fresh. I’m a big advocate of taking care of yourself from the inside out, from the food you eat, to the water you drink, to the sleep you get, to the products you put on your skin. Most people forget that the skin is the biggest organ in the body, so it’s just as important to nourish it – I’m a fan of natural, organic products – my favorite brand is Acure.

I’m also aware that budget factors into most people’s choices, so organic coconut oil or sesame oil are fantastic natural and cheap skincare alternatives.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have done bold photo shoots. What advice you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such bold modeling?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: It’s such an exciting time to be involved in the fitness industry, especially as a woman, when the past couple of years, has really seen a shift in how we want to feel, look and train. The attitude has definitely shifted towards being strong and capable, and having a body that reflects this. Lifting heavy and training hard is now embraced more than ever. There is nothing more rewarding that seeing a woman be empowered in the gym, and then seeing how this translates into her attitude towards the rest of her life.

If I can inspire women to want to be fit, healthy and strong by challenging the concept of how a woman’s body should look, as portrayed in mainstream media, then so be it. Bring it on!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your concept of “Lifestyle Coaching”?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: The importance of lifestyle choices is under-estimated. Poor nutrition, stress management, exposure to toxins, sleep and recovery are all vital components of a bigger picture. I am passionate about giving my clients the tools and the foundation for which to make better choices, both inside and outside of the gym, so that they can improve on their quality of life. It’s about time we learnt to have a positive relationship with food and exercise – if I can provide real-time and practical information, that people can integrate into their lives step by step so they can learn to take control of their minds, bodies and lives without it being a stressful experience, then that’s a huge bonus!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have worked with New Zealand’s world champion rugby team, the All Blacks. Tell us about this experience of yours ?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: When I was starting out in the industry, I was really fortunate to be given the opportunity to work in a pilates studio that catered to top level athletes including the All Blacks, who were using the training in their off season as a prehab measure, and for some of their injured players to correct structural imbalances and movement limitations. I gained such a wealth of information from being immersed in such a “hands on” environment where clients were really in tune with their own bodies. The whole experience prompted a huge fascination for me with the capabilities of the human body, and really prompted me to continue my education and my own individual training.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Alexa Towersey: The health and fitness industry is always evolving, so try and keep an open mind, and take the time to try new things and figure out what works for you. This is the best way to make sure that any of the goals you have, whether they be for weight loss, fat loss, sports performance or just general health and well being, are achieved quickly, safely and in a way that is sustainable for the rest of your life. There is no “quick fix”, or miracle pill – trust the process. Make good choices, eat clean, work hard and be patient with yourself. Create a lifestyle, not a fad.
