Amelia Lowe talented contemporary dancer on “So You Think You Can Dance” Season 9 is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

We all wish to know your professional dance journey from your childhood to reaching ‘So You Think You Can Dance Season 9’ ?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

I started dancing when I was five years old. My mom was taking dance classes at a local studio and thought that it would be a good idea to bring me along and sign me up. I fell in love with dance from the start. I didn’t start seriously training though until I was ten years old. At that point I changed to a bigger studio and began competing in local and national competitions. Every weekend I would perform groups, duos, and solos on a new stage. I believe it was during this time in my life that I learned all of the skills that I would later need when I auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance. I auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance when I was 18 years old and I was still a senior in high school.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You reached the pinnacle of success by being a professional dancer on So You Think You Can Dance Season 9 and made it into the top 12. What factors do you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

In order to be successful on So You Think You Can Dance it is not enough to just be a great dancer. You also have to be an interesting person that people will want to get behind and root for. You have to be extremely unique and personable. For me I have a very specific style that was unlike anyone that had seen so far.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

As a dancer most of my exercise comes from taking different dance classes. But I specifically work on my core because that is most important in my profession.

Having a strong core helps to maintain balance, control, and the ability to move really fast or really slow depending on what’s necessary. I strengthen my core by doing good old fashion crunches, planks, or push-ups.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

I don’t really have a strict diet that I follow. I just try to do everything in moderation. Too much of anything, even healthy food, can backfire on you if you’re not careful. I also don’t deny my cravings. If I’m dying for something sweet, I let myself have a small cookie or something like that. I’ve found that when I cut out sweets all together I end up obsessing about them and then breaking down and binge eating when I can’t take it anymore. I also try to cook all of my meals when I can. It allows you to control exactly what you’re taking in and it saves you money too.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

I’m very simple when it comes to maintaining my hair and skin. I usually just wash my makeup off at night before bed and then wash my face with water when I wake up in the morning. I think less is more when it comes to skincare. You don’t necessarily need twenty different lotions and scrubs. For my hair I use shampoo and conditioner that helps to keep my color fresh and vibrant. And I don’t wash my hair every single day unless I have to. There are healthy oils that you wash away when you wash it too frequently.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding professional dance girls who all are your fans and shall like to know from you for their climb to ladder of success in the field professional dancing?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

I would say to aspiring young dancers that they need to be training in as many different styles as possible. When you get to the professional world you don’t get to choose the kinds of styles expected of you at auditions. The more you know, the more work you’ll be able to get. I would also say to study different things outside of dance as well. Take vocal lessons, acting, or learn how to play an instrument. Every extra skill you have will be an advantage when you’re competing for jobs.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your memorable experience on being featured as a dancer at the premiere for The Great Gatsby ?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

The most memorable moment for me when I was performing at the premier for the Great Gatsby was seeing Leonardo DiCaprio in person. I had been joking with the other dancers the entire week of rehearsals about how all I wanted was to meet DiCaprio. We had finished performing and we were dancing on the floor with the guests at the party.

One of my friends tapped me on the shoulder and pointed to a tall, well-dressed man a few feet from us. It was him! My knees buckled and I became melted butter. I wish that I could have played it cool but I was a complete mess. For someone who has had a movie star crush on him since I first saw him onscreen, it was a very surreal moment.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your inspiration and motivation in choosing dancing as your profession ?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

One of my biggest inspirations growing up was the movie Chicago. I can’t single out any specific actress or dancer in that film because they all played such a huge role for me. I used to watch it on repeat so I could learn the songs and then I would make up my own dances to the songs. Ironically I was always Roxy Hart when I was little and playing pretend. Now I look like Velma Kelly and I find her so much more interesting. Chicago is still one of my favorite movies ever.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your dancing experience with Ellenore Scott in his company ELSCO ?

Ms. Amelia Lowe:

Dancing for Ellenore Scott, fellow SYTYCD alum, in her company ELSCO has been such a great experience for me. She allows the dancers to have creative input in the choreographic process and she puts such a high value on the work that we do. I’ve found in New York especially that it’s hard to find companies where you can be both creatively fulfilled and actually get paid well for your work. Ellenore always pays us for our rehearsals and performances. In a field where most company directors feel that “exposure” and “experience” are enough to compensate for your long hours of work, it’s great to have someone backing her dancers up and giving them what they deserve.

Women Fitness Team thanks Amelia Lowe for giving her valuable time for this interview and quenching the thirst of her fans to know more about her and made this interview happen.
