Betsy Landin: Latino Film Actress Reveals Her Workout, Diet & Beauty Secrets

Betsy Landin: Exceptionally Talented Latino Film Actress Reveals her Workout, Diet and Beauty Secrets

Film actress Betsy Landín has had a knack for entertaining audiences since she was the youngest member of the church choir back in Puerto Rico at 3 years old. At the age of 9 her family moved to Orlando, Florida where she grew up singing and acting in church. Her talent, poise, and beauty won her the title “Miss Puerto Rico of Orlando” in 2002. Always passionate about the arts, she went on to get a degree in music from Rollins College.

After college Betsy delved into the world of professional acting, exploring a variety of characters from sweet imaginative roles at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios to butt-kicking leading ladies in independent films like “Puppet Apocalypse.” After being cast in the feature film “Dolphin Tale” (starring Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick, Jr. and Ashley Judd) Betsy knew it was time to make a break for L.A. Betsy dreams of a lifelong career of playing strong women and being cast in films that inspire audiences.

Betsy Landin is going to make a splash as she returns as dolphin trainer Kat in the hit Disney family drama “Dolphin Tale 2” (September 2014) opposite Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, and Kris Kristofferson. “Dolphin Tale” follows the story of a dolphin named Winter that lost her tail due to a crab trap accident and was later rescued off the Florida coast by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and fitted with a prosthetic tail. The original film grossed almost $100 million worldwide. The sequel will revolve around more true stories from Clearwater Marine Aquarium, including both Winter and the baby dolphin, Hope.

Landin will also guest star in this season of Showtime’s hit series “Ray Donovan” opposite Liev Schreiber. Additionally, she recently wrapped production on the thriller film “Deceived.” Landin lives in Los Angeles with her two Chihuahuas Toby Magic and Sif Wonder affectionately named after Wonder Woman. She is currently in the process of producing a documentary about The Stryder Canine Foundation, whose mission is to assist animals and their humans with financial & emotional support during their treatment of cancer. In her spare time, she enjoys painting, working out and cooking new healthy recipes.

Film and Television

Betsy Landin is an exceptionally talented Latino film actress. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Your love and inclination for entertaining audiences reflected when you were the youngest member of the church choir at the age of three and later decided to pursue acting. You reached the height of success and acted in the feature film “Dolphin Tale”. Tell us about your journey that took you to where you are now in the world of acting as an actress?

Ms. Betsy Landin: I’ve always enjoyed acting. Ever since I was a kid. I always saw it as a hobby, something fun, but never really thought it’d end up being my career. In fact, I went to school for music and sang in local cover bands. I was even recording several times for solo projects and with a girl group, but nothing ever came of it. When things started happening in the acting side, I chose to put the music aside. As soon as I made that choice, the doors began to open. Everything happens for a reason.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have selected a profession of being an actress in films that requires a lot of hard labor, technical soundness and excellence in different faculties to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?

Ms. Betsy Landin: I guess I just love the challenge of learning a new set of skills or researching a role. It’s part of developing the character for me. Just as much as when I sit down to write a biography for each of the characters I’ve done, the training process is a time for me to step into their skin. I’ve always been really active and love doing my own stunts whenever they let me. I’ve also earned a few bruises. When the adrenaline is kicking in you just want to brush it off and do another take. I love what I do so even when the hours are long and I’m cold and dirty or doing strenuous work… I’m just happy to be on set working.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: In 2002, you won the title of “Miss Puerto Rico of Orlando”. Tell us about this milestone achievement of yours?

Ms. Betsy Landin: Before doing Miss PRO, I was really shy. I could get up and perform in a play or sing. I could step onstage as someone else, but I was afraid when it was just me and I had nothing to hide behind. When I moved to the states from Puerto Rico, it was a huge culture shock and I think that led me to being an introvert. The pageant helped me to overcome that. I learned to believe in myself and to walk proudly and speak confidently. Many people hate pageants because all they see is the glamour aspect, but it was the best decision I ever made. I still use all of the skills I learned during my time as queen.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Betsy Landin: I love to change up my exercise routine. I think it’s important to keep the body guessing and that’s how I’ve seen the best results. California is known for its awesome hiking spots and I love getting a good workout outside so I do different hikes all the time. Bikram and hot yoga incorporating weights is amazing too! There’s nothing like a good sweat! I also do cardio barre for long lean muscles. I have an athletic build so keeping my weights between 1 and 5 lbs with high repetition is key to tone up without
the bulk.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What does your diet consist of that allows you to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Betsy Landin: Five years ago I decided to become vegan. That lasted a month after I realized that I didn’t want to live without cheese. Since then, I’ve found a happy balance being pescetarian. I make sure to keep my house full of fresh fruits, nuts, legumes, and veggies. I rarely keep bread in the house and use quinoa and quinoa pasta a lot. I believe 80% of our grocery shopping should be done in the produce section and farmer’s markets. I don’t really ever get sick anymore. Diet is key.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. What is your skin regimen that keeps it looking young and glowing? What you do use for your hair?

Ms. Betsy Landin: Thank you! In order to maintain healthy skin, I make myself drink a lot of water, even when I don’t want to. It’s super important in overall health and when I’m dehydrated my skin is the first to show it. I also take off my make up every night no matter how tired I am and make sure I wear moisturizer day and night. For my hair, I use sulfate-free products to maintain my color and I don’t blow dry my hair if I don’t have to. I also take vitamins to ensure I’m getting proper nutrients to my hair, skin, and nails.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are reprising your role of dolphin trainer Kat in the hit Disney family drama “Dolphin Tale 2” opposite Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, and Kris Kristofferson. Tell us about your experience working with such leading Hollywood co-stars?

Ms. Betsy Landin: It was the best experience I’ve had as an actor thus far. Harry was super sweet and so funny! I worked with him the most and I must say there was never a dull day. We all had so much fun. Kris Kristofferson was amazing. He’s such a legend. I remember talking to him about his start in music thinking, “This guy knew Johnny Cash. He wrote Me and Bobby McGee. Somebody pinch me.” Morgan Freeman was… well the man has played God. I mean, everyone has such respect for him and he is such a humble and approachable man. Every time we’d chat I learned something new. He’s truly a living legend.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What advice and motivational words do you have for aspiring actresses?

Ms. Betsy Landin: Don’t give up. This business can be really hard and you’ll have your days when you’ll just want to throw in the towel, but perseverance is key. If this is what you love to do, pursue it. Take classes, put in the time, ask questions, knock on lots of doors, and you’ll see results. Overnight success often takes years of preparation so be ready when that door does open.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your inspiration and motivation that led you to your success in the world of acting?

Ms. Betsy Landin: I think I’ve always had actors and actresses whose work I’ve admired like Meryl Streep, but when it comes to motivation, I’d have to say my dad. It’s been that way my whole life. He taught us to work for the things we wanted and when it came to being in the entertainment industry, let’s just say he wanted me to study engineering or architecture. In the beginning, I worked really hard to show him that the decision I had made to be an actress wasn’t just a ‘foolish gamble’. When I moved to LA, no matter how difficult it was at first, whenever he’d tell me that I could always come back home, I’d reply that this was where I needed to be. Nowadays, I’m motivated by possibility and the desire to see where my career can grow to. Dad is now one of my biggest cheerleaders and respects the fact that I did exactly what he taught me to do.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are currently in the process of producing a documentary about The Stryder Canine Foundation, whose mission is to assist animals and their humans with financial & emotional support during their treatment of cancer. What can you tell us about this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Betsy Landin: I met SCF founder Dr. Juli Goldstein after filming the first Dolphin Tale. Her and I became instant friends and one of the things we both shared was our love for our ‘furry children.’ When she told me about her dog Stryder who passed away from cancer and the goal of her foundation, I decided to help. We are in the developing stages of the documentary and have an amazing team working with us to make it happen. For more information on SCF and what you can do to help, visit www.wagstrong.org

Ms. Namita Nayyar: After visiting Womenfitness.net, what message do you have for its visitors?

Ms. Betsy Landin: Fitness is a lifestyle. You have to make the decision to make your life better, no one can do that for you. If you fall off the wagon, get back up. The goal is not to be perfect. It’s to be happy and healthy.
