You are a makeup artist, author, and the founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Share your journey as a make-up artist & series of events that lead to the company’s evolution.

Bobbi Brown

With the launch of my new brand, JONES ROAD, I made a full circle return to my roots: the world of cosmetics. In 1991, I launched Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, which I sold to the Estée Lauder Companies four years later. I remained with the brand for the next 22 years, developing products and sharing my beauty philosophy around the world, before leaving my namesake brand in 2016.

When I left Bobbi Brown Cosmetics four years ago, I had time on my hands and no idea what I was going to do next. I was so busy at the brand I barely knew what I was having for dinner each night, let alone thinking about creating a new brand.  The one thing I did know I’d be doing was promoting my 9th book, Beauty From the Inside Out, which was really more about nutrition and wellness than it was about beauty. Promoting that book is really what put me on my new entrepreneurial path. First, I went back to school to become a certified health coach. Then, I launched EVOLUTION_18, a line of wellness and ingestible products. Then, Masterclass called me and asked me to do a makeup masterclass, which was such an honor.  Doing the Masterclass reminded me that, before anything else, I’m a makeup artist first – I’ve been doing this for 40 years. It was then I realized it was time for me to get back to my roots.

Good clean cosmetics products that do not harm the skin and make you look naturally beautiful are hard to find.

Share more input on the first series of products you launched & motivation behind them.

Bobbi Brown

JONES ROAD is the culmination of my 40 years of experience as a makeup artist and product developer.  It’s also a reflection of who I am today. I’m wearing less makeup today than I ever did, and so are the models who I’m making up in my chair. That transparent, naturally beautiful look feels more modern right now than a full face of makeup. JONES ROAD is a collection of the products I was wanted for myself because I couldn’t find them anywhere else – an edited indispensable collection of clean, high-grade formulations designed for all ages, skin types and skin tones.

What are your favorite products in your new cosmetics line, Bobbi Brown?

Bobbi Brown

JONES ROAD is a tightly edited collection of products and every one of them are hero products because they are all multi-purpose and over-deliver in terms of performance. If I had to pick two offerings that every woman should own, I’d say, first, the Miracle Balm. I’m obsessed with it. It adds a wash of soft-focus moisture to enhance your skin. It reflects light so it adds a hint of glow wherever you need it – cheeks, eyelids or lips. It also comes in four different shades so you can wear it alone, or layer it on top of your foundation. It’s made with jojoba seed oil, argan oil and Vitamin E so it also nourishes your skin.  It’s high-performing, multi-purpose and is full of amazing, “good-for-you” ingredients, all in one. Second, I love the new Nancy Kit—the perfect collection of makeup essentials in universally-flattering hues.

You have written nine books about beauty and wellness. How would you define the beauty of an individual? Does one need load of make-up to enhance beauty.

Bobbi Brown

When you look back at the beauty industry when I created my original brand and then fast-forward to now, a whole new beauty business is emerging. Women today shop differently; they have a new definition of what beauty is. Imperfect is beautiful. Your imperfections are who you are.  JONES ROAD celebrates that.  It’s the ultimate no-makeup makeup.

Exercise & Fitness have a huge role to play in maintaining a healthy-looking skin. Please share your daily fitness routine.

Bobbi Brown

I’ve always said I don’t look good until I exercise. I wrote about my routine on justBobbi.com, and broke down my favorite workouts, which I rotate often: walking (I usually get about 10,000 steps walking around the neighborhood) free weights, running, HIIT TRAINING, Pilates, barre and cycling.

You look evergreen as ever. Please share input on the Diet you follow.

My main priority every day is to drink lots of water—hydration is key. In the morning, I use a  Nespresso machine and fill a mini mason jar with two shots of the Ristretto black capsule espresso. For breakfast, I prefer Fage yogurt and a high-fiber cereal. For lunch, I love having a grass-fed, buffalo hamburger, wrapped in lettuce with a pickle, onion, sprouts, spinach, tomatoes, Maille mustard and a kale salad—followed by more water. After that, I’ll have two squares of dark chocolate to end the meal. (I always have to have something sweet.) Dinner is usually vegetable-centric with a clean protein. Dessert for me is blueberries, cinnamon and maybe a bit of coconut milk, followed by a cup of peppermint or chamomile tea.

Key factors to watch before choosing a foundation for a particular skin type.

Bobbi Brown

Here are my four tips for choosing the right foundation:

  1. Use daylight. You must check the foundation under daylight to make sure that it’s the right color. So, if you must walk away from the counter and go outside with a small mirror, just look at it, and you’ll know it’s the right color.
  2.  Make sure it disappears. You want to make sure that whatever foundation you choose, when you apply it to the side of the face, disappears. And you want it to be the same tone as your skin. So, when you choose one, you put it on your skin, you blend it in, and if it disappears, it’s the right color.
  3. Find the right formula for your skin type: Powders foundations, which are either loose or pressed, are great for oily skin. It’s different for skin that’s dryer or more mature. I would recommend for dryer skin more of a liquid foundation, and definitely a moisturizer  to go with it. And a lot of moisturizers will say moisturizing foundation in the title, and so you’ll know.
  4. Choose a yellow-toned foundation. Yellow-toned foundations look the most natural on all skin tones. Your foundation should not change the color of your face but should match the color of your skin.

Share [an inspiration] that has stayed by over the years.

Bobbi Brown

I’ve had a photo of Phoebe Philo, the former designer of Celine, on my inspiration board since I began creating JONES ROAD. She’s wearing a simple navy blue sweater and no makeup and she looks effortlessly beautiful. That’s how I want people to feel when they try JONES ROAD.

Skin & hair care routine you follow to look flawless. 5 must tips for women in their 40s when putting on make-up to suit aging skin. Things they should avoid doing.

Bobbi Brown

I’m 63-years-old and I keep my daily skin care routine very simple.  First, I’m not wearing a lot of makeup these days so that really helps. At night, I wash my face with either coconut oil or a natural cleanser that I’m working on right now for JONES ROAD.  I also believe that following a regular wellness routine of drinking lots of water, eating well and incorporating good fats into your diet throughout the day makes a huge difference in the health of your skin. I’ve never had any work done on my face but, I do swear by laser treatments and the Augustinus Bader moisturizer.

As we get older, the most important factor to remember when choosing makeup is paying close attention to is the texture and tone of the makeup we wear. Always choose textures that are hydrating vs. drying.  Your makeup should go on smoothly and feel good on your skin.  And when it comes to colors to choose, wear the colors that you like, but just be sure the shade compliments your skintone.  Choose colors that enhance your natural beauty vs. making you look washed out or garish.

Concealer is also important – especially when using it under the fragile skin under your eyes.

The right concealer is one that doesn’t embed itself in the fine lines we have around our eyes. Even before concealer, we need to start with just the right amount of eye cream to moisturize the skin around those fine lines. Then, apply the concealer on top of that.  If you’re properly hydrating under your eyes, the concealer shouldn’t smear or get in between the lines.

A memory that made you proud of your work and what you’ve accomplished.

Bobbi Brown

In honor of the 20th anniversary of my namesake brand, I did a world tour.  Parties in my honor were held at the US Embassy in France, the UK and China.  That made me feel like I had really made it and that my name had resonance with women throughout the world.
