Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your journey that took you to the top of the world of fitness training?

Ms. Camille Clarke: Well it all started with struggles with my own health and fitness! As a young person, I was obese weighing in at 250+ pounds at my maximum and living on pizza and candy! When I fell in love with basketball, I was busy and more active and I ate less which Iead to losing a lot of weight. I went all the way down to 125lbs was a high recruited basketball player but then tore my ACL.

Without surgery, I was able to get back on the court at a D1 school! In college, I was Pre Med student. After a semester in med school, at a routine doctor’s visit, the doctors discovered that I had a cancerous tumor in my ovaries! They talked of taking out my uterus and Fallopian tubes! But after my bouts with chemo, my cancer went into remission so I opted not to have the recommended surgery. At this point, I realized I wanted to focus on preventing illness, not trying to cure it when it had already developed. At that point, I attained a master’s degree in exercise science. So basically my life journey has led me into this field! I’ve had the blessing to help others reach their personal fitness and health goals.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: How your experience and background of as an accomplished athlete who played high-school basketball, volleyball and football and with education of BS in Psychology, Sociology and Exercises Physiology and MS in Exercise Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh has helped you in your present profession of Fitness Trainer, Fitness Expert and Fitness Model?

Ms. Camille Clarke: As I mentioned above, all my experiences has had an impact! I always say my experience and education makes me a better trainer! Because I’ve been there, and through it! I understand the emotional eating, the struggles of weight loss and training to be a better athlete, to rehab injuries, and even t face serious disease! If I can do it, then anyone can and I’m here to guide and support others with what I’ve learned.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Share your exercise routine that you do to maintain such a bikini perfect physique?

Ms. Camille Clarke: It varies depending on if I’m getting ready for a competition! I never “let myself go” during off season because I am experimenting with new techniques, exercises and diets, and I like to run in races to support my clients. I generally keep my routine the same on- or off-season but just change my diet when cutting down! I use to be a cardio queen, but I realize that just made it harder for me to maintain muscle! So I lift heavy 3-4 days per week and so sprint/plyo intervals 2 times per week and yoga at least once! I also have regular massages and occasional chiropractic adjustments to keep everything in order.

When I get closer to being on stage, I might add more cardio but no more that 25 min 6 days per week .

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your diet? Do you take a particular fixed regulated diet comprising of nutrients and vitamins to keep you in perfect health?

Ms. Camille Clarke: First of all, I always eat clean and try to focus on organic and natural products. I realize I handle carbs very well; if I cut them out ,I lose a lot of muscle and actually look softer and I stop losing weight! But carbs also makes my abdomen section less tight! I am also concerned as to whether I am insulin resistant. My carb sources are gluten free and low glycemic!

I take in a lot of Omega 3’s through supplements but also I eat sardines, salmon on a daily basis! I just switch up how I cook! I’ll do a salmon burger one week or just a salmon filet! Sardines with walnuts or with brown rice!

In prep, I use yams as my only carbs and I eat 6-7 meals per day! My ratio ends up being 45%carbs, 30%protein and 25% fats! I use a lot of coconut oil and butter; when I’m in prep, I switch that to MCT oil! It really helps with my GI, thyroid and energy when dropping carbs and calories!

I also adjust my water as I go. I never take diuretics. I believe in drinking a large amount of water during my last few weeks of prep and then cutting it out in the last few days.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Camille Clarke: I really think it’s my diet with all of the water, omega 3’s, sardines, salmon and coconut oil! I keep my good fats in! I also rely on my hairdresser to give me the best cut to keep the luster in my hair!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have done bold fitness photo shoots. What advice you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such bold modeling?

Ms. Camille Clarke: I have tried to do a variety of modeling. I have even done some lingerie but I’m also a Christian and I won’t do anything out my comfort zone! I’m confident in myself but try to never do anything untasteful! The human body to me is a work of art , When I pose I try to sell an emotion and communicate the right pose. You can be sexy without make up! Its in a twist or sometimes just the eyes! I get more feedback on my sex appeal when I do shoots fully clothed, not even my stomach exposed! This makes me laugh because it’s really all about the imagination!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: In 2008, you were diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, due to dietary and lifestyle changes you responded well to the chemo and was able to surpass surgery. Tell us about your experience you wish to share in winning this battle and being a proud cancer survivor?

Ms. Camille Clarke: I’m the kind of person who has to know why and how! With my cancer diagnosis, I did a ton of research about everything related to the cancer. Today I know in estrogen dominant, which I didn’t understand before! But that means my chances of getting an estrogen-driven cancer is high. I also know that sugar and stress increases my chances of getting cancer. So I TRY to decrease or even eliminate these two factors.

For example, I try keeping my carbs steady throughout the day to not get cravings, doing yoga and getting my sleep! Also what people don’t realize is that when you’re stressed you release cortisol, cortisol decreases blood sugar levels and you need insulin to raise blood sugar levels so the craving for carbs decreases! So, if I keep?? loo I keep my body in control! Also, I keep my omega 3’s to balance out my omega 6’s to decrease my inflammation! Today’s diets include too many things that increase inflammation which is a risk factor for cancer.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Elaborate on your personalised concept of “Personal Training” you offer online and offline?

Ms. Camille Clarke: I believe in balance, hormonally, physically and emotionally! So when I meet a client I asked many questions to figure out both their physical and mental well being. I also put them through a fitness test so I know where there physical fitness level is to start, then I look at their physical alignment to find any muscle weakness or inflexibility! Then I do a Poliquin body fat BioSignature Modulation which allows me to figure out which hormone is currently overworked!

Based on the above test, I would have had an idea, but the tests back up my theory! Based on all this info, the client’s goal and lifestyle, I write out an individualized program! Everyone is different, low carbs work for one while high carbs work for another! I might suggest yoga only depending on how stress they are! I might suggest lifting or HIT it all depends on their goals. Then as we start to work together, we continue to adjust and reset goals and track progress. A lot of the problems clients face are due to the stresses in their work or home lives.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have exceptional set of fitness expertise. Being AFAA Group Fitness, ACSM and NESTA Personal Trainer certification, BS in Psychology, Sociology and Exercise Physiology at the University of Pittsburgh, MS in Exercise Science from the University of Pittsburgh, Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf Fitness Trainer, Gary Gray Institute Certified Poliquin BioSignature Modulation Certification and Precision Nutrition Certification. Tell us about your “hormonal approach” to fitness?

Ms. Camille Clarke: As I said above, with the Poliquin Biosignature modulation you can test to see which hormone is currently over active! When one hormone is overactive, this can shut down other hormones causing weight loss and diets to not work! Also inflammation and water retention occurs, blunting weight loss and causing jointal pain! I first try to balance, normally balancing drops a substantial amount if weight due to decreasing water retention! Also when you decrease pain and balance hormones people become more active and consistence! Many of my clients are premenopausal or going through menopause. Some of my clients are pregnant. It is very important that I understand the hormonal challenges to make a plan that works.
