Namita Nayyar:

Having won one WTA singles title whereas on the ITF Women’s Circuit, eleven singles titles and one doubles title. Walk us through your spectacular journey and share what appeals to you about the sport?

Carina Witthöft:

The last few years have been an incredible journey. Connected with ups and downs but mainly with so many unforgettable, great moments. I have seen pretty much the whole world and played in all the big tournaments of the world. Starting at the age of 14 at my first small ITF tournament in Germany to the Grand Slams in London, Paris, New York and Melbourne.

Among the unforgettable moments are the 13 tournament victories I could celebrate and it is exactly for such moments that you play tennis and it is worth working hard every day. In difficult situations you sometimes forget what you get up every day for, physically pushing yourself to the limit, getting on a plane every week, and exposing yourself to enormous physical but mainly mental stress.

These are exactly those moments when you celebrate a success although you have doubts inside, your hands have been trembling with nervousness, but you fight your way through and believe in yourself, for which I play tennis and which are the attraction. What makes tennis so special and appealing for me is that you have the sole responsibility. In the end, I alone am responsible for victory or defeat.

Namita Nayyar:

When were you introduced to the game of tennis? What motivated you to take it up professionally?

Carina Witthöft:

I started playing tennis when I was 4 years old. My parents run a tennis facility in Hamburg and are passionate tennis players themselves. I immediately had a lot of fun playing tennis, but from the beginning I had the same ambition. As I got better and better with time and the first German ranking list U12 came out and I was number one in my year I said that I wanted to become a professional.

Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life. One thing you must do every morning.

Carina Witthöft:

My alarm clock rings at 8.30am at the latest, but most of the time I’m already awake earlier and get a coffee I still drink in bed (time must be). After getting up I start the day with a small 15 minute yoga routine. These two things are essential for me to start the day and have the best day every day

Five exercises that essentially comprise your workout routine? The therapy you undertake to prevent injury or overcome it? Your advice to beginners.

Carina Witthöft:

To prevent injuries, the cool down is very important for me. That means Yoga and stretching. After each training session I do a round of yoga and then stretch the muscles explicitly. My tip for beginners is: relax and stretch your muscles after a workout. Keep your body supple. That way you are less prone to injuries and more efficient the next day.

Namita Nayyar:

The diet that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit? Two supplements that are key essential for immunity and enhanced performance.

Carina Witthöft:

Of course, as a competitive athlete I pay attention to my diet. I try to eat a very balanced diet with lots of fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. I do without wheat and sugar (there are exceptions from time to time). As a food supplement for a good immune system and improved performance, vitamin C and magnesium are essential for me.

Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career? Quote, you live by.

Carina Witthöft:

My biggest and best influence is definitely my mother. She has been my coach for years and supports me in good and bad times. She supports me with advice and action every day. 12 of the 13 tournaments I have won in my career, my mother has accompanied me. I think it is hardly necessary to say more about it 🙂 I live under the motto: “Change your thoughts and you change your world”.

Namita Nayyar:

In the current pandemic situation, how are you keeping yourself busy while staying at home?

Carina Witthöft:

I go jogging regularly and do a daily home workout. Otherwise I spend a lot of time with my family. Additionally I love to cook and bake.

Namita Nayyar:

Your Instagram shows your love for stretching and flexibility, share with us five moves that are a must for improving your flexibility?

Carina Witthöft:
  1. This stretching exercise is for the back of your thighs. While standing, bend forward to your feet and try to reach the floor with your hands. Hold the position for at least 1 minute.
  2. This stretching exercise is for the front of your thigh and you can also do it while standing. Grab your right foot with your right hand and pull it towards your buttocks. Make sure that you push your hip forward and your knee backward. Hold this exercise for at least 1 minute and then switch legs.
  3. This stretching exercise is for your hip flexor. Make a wide lunge and lean forward with your body so that your back leg is extended as far as possible. Advanced users can keep their upper body straight.
  4. This stretching exercise is for your hips and your adductors. Both soles of your feet touch each other and are pulled towards your body. If you keep your back straight and move your knees down, the tension in your hip muscles and adductors will increase. Advanced students can try to bend the upper body forward and touch the feet with the tip of their nose.
  5. During the last stretching exercise you stretch your shoulders and upper back. In the “child pose” that comes from yoga, you kneel down and sit on your feet. Then you lean forward and stretch your arms far forward on the floor.

Apart from tennis, other activities do you enjoy the most?

Carina Witthöft:

Besides tennis, I like to do yoga, go jogging or do cross fit.

Namita Nayyar:

Social media has gained significance nowadays, how do you use it to influence your audience? One tip to pose in front of the camera.

Carina Witthöft:

Most of my followers know me only as a tennis player, so I like to give insights into my private life or when I do yoga or other activities. I try to motivate other people to do sports and to inspire them in a certain way. A tip to pose in front of the camera: Enchant people with a natural but radiant smile.
