Carlie Hunter is International Pole Artist of the Year 2014 and winner of numerous awards in pole dancing. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You started pole dancing few years back and reached the pinnacle of success in pole dancing where you stood 1st at Australian Pole Championships 2012. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

Certainly hard work, being persistent and believing in myself. At that point I had already been in pole dancing for nearly 6 years and had struggled to find my place in the pole world, I never thought I would be good enough to even compete at national level but I continued to pursue my dreams. Nothing in this world comes easily, I trained extremely hard.. The first time I won with the routine “The Granny” and it was the first of my real successes.

I strongly believe it was due to finally trusting my instincts. I had decided to stop caring about placing in competitions and just performing for the audience and for myself, that attitude started a long line of different successes beginning with that first Australian Pole Championships win. The 2012 win ( the following year) was the result of a routine I had worked on for The Pole World Cup. I trained almost every second day and was certainly at my fittest at that point.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Elaborate on the concept of “Granny” routine for which you received the 2012 IPDFA “Choreographer of The Year Award”. ?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

I was the first person to do such an elaborate character so it was extremely risky, especially at Miss Pole Dance Australia which is known for its high heels and more sexy approach. I really wanted to show the world that pole dance was not limited to just contemporary or the traditional sexy style. Behind the granny was the idea that you are never too old to pole dance, the concept itself came from years of thought, i had held onto the idea for around 4 years, searching for the music to bring the idea together. The idea was that the poles would control the granny and her actions. When she touched the pole she would be controlled by its music, with each poles different soundtrack giving a new element to the show. The first pole was represented by song “Shake ya ass” which essentially is the first thing people expect you to do on a pole and can be extremely uncomfortable to do. The second song was “ooh yeah” this song represented having to strip down and expose yourself for class or for the stage. The third song was the well known song “Weapon of Choice” where actor Christopher Walken dances in the film clip… This song was the final chapter and represented letting go. Letting go of all fear and dancing for yourself. I wanted to show that no matter how old you are you are just as old as you feel. I gift wrapped the show in comedy.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

I mainly train on the pole, I work on specific core exercises for strength training and I teach classes so I keep my strength up there. I spent a lot of spare time stretching, I do a lot of strength based movement so my muscles are tight, I need to maintain flexibility so it is certainly a priority. When I am not training on the pole you can find me working on dance composition and choreography.

I try to get to the gym once a week just to work on my back muscles, there are a few muscles that are generally weaker in pole dancers as we don’t utilize these muscles on the pole, so I spent time doing weights in the gym that are beneficial for keeping my body even and in good shape. I am working a lot on Inverts, shoulder mounts, handsprings for strength. I work on a lot of dynamic flexibility movements. In the gym I recommend chin ups, seated rows and latt pull downs as great exercises to strengthen your Rhomboids as well as compliment your pole dancing regime.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

No I definitely don’t have a strict diet! I eat what I want but certainly in moderation. I believe that it is important to eat a balanced, maintainable diet. Not everyone is the same and not everyone can eat what they like. I try to eat a lot of protein and fats for breakfast and I drink a lot of water. When I am competing I may use a protein supplement after training but I try not to as I believe we can get our nutrients from food. I do however take magnesium, fish oil and glucosamine suppliments for my muscles and joints.

Carly Booth on Women Fitness: Women Fitness is a fantastic online site for women with a wide range of accessible information on women health issues and fitness. There is something for everyone from interviews, nutrition information and training advice. It is certainly one of the best sources available on the internet!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding pole dancing girls who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of pole dancing ?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

I think it’s extremely important to not measure yourself against others and to be true to yourself and your own style. I find a lot of girls who compare them selves to other pole dancers and its important to remember that everybody has had their own path to success. Every training step you have taken in your life has led each dancer to their current ability, whether it be in pole or somewhere else. It is important to look after your body, train at your own pace and be consistent. The most important thing is to NEVER GIVE UP, as cliche as it sounds. I have never found any success the first time I have wanted something but my persistence and drive has followed with success.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after standing 1st at Miss Pole Dance Australia 2012, Doubles Division?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

Fantastic! Myself and performer Chelle Hafner had a lot of fun with this routine. It was one of the easiest routines to prepare due to our ability to get along and get things done. Chelle and I were extremely happy to be crowned champions at the competition and it gave me a lot of confidence as well as a taste for doubles. This was also a large factor in the reason I went on to win the International Pole Championships Doubles category in Hong Kong as it gave me a stepping stone as well as doubles knowledge.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about the activities of your endeavor Adelaide based pole studio “The Pole Boutique”?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

The Pole Boutique! The love of my life, besides my fiancée of course! The Pole Boutique was set up because I wanted a studio in which I could create a community environment and share my passion for this amazing sport. I previously spoke with several students who had felt my help had assisted them in fixing a lot of personal issues including confidence and I wanted to share that ability with as many others as I could.

The studio has been around for 3.5 years now and has done extremely well both in business and competitively. We were a finalist in the 2013 Telstra Business Awards with just 4 others in the small business category, we consider this as a huge step for exposing pole dance to the business world as a legitimate fitness. The studio now boasts over 40 classes a week and is my main time consumer. I teach around 15- 20 lessons a week including classes and private tuition and I spend a lot of time helping my instructors and students to recognize their own dreams.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influencer and motivator in your success in the field of your career in competitive pole dancing ?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

Certainly a small group around me named the Pure Pole Elements as well as my fiancee. Luxe letoile, Bailey Hart, Chelle Hafner and Natalie Tekanawa have been there for me through all of my competition ups and downs and have continued to support my training and career goals. Competition can be relentless on your body and mind and these people have guided me to success through their confidence of me and their sound performance advice.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about you being the ambassador for X-POLE Australia, Dry Hands and Bad Kitty, how do you use these roles to help educate people of the wonderful benefits that pole dance can bring?

Ms. Carlie Hunter:

These three sponsors are all companies that are taking the extra step to grow the pole dance community through sponsorship of athletes and education on pole fitness. They have all in different ways helped me to grow as an athlete as well as to share my ideas and beliefs within the pole dance industry, thus allowing me to have a voice to a larger audience. It is important for me as an individual to support women, men and youth not only physically but mentally. Having suffered depression and self doubt, I have a strong will to help others to believe in themselves as well as their abilities.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
