celina jade

Celina Jade is an actress, singer, songwriter, model and martial artist. Born in Hong Kong to American Kung Fu star, Roy Horan (who shared the big screen with the legendary Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan), action fighting has been in Celina’s blood from an early age and her passion shows in her lead role in Legendary Assassin.

It was evident that Celina would be an entertainer from a young age. Her love for music led to her winning an Asia-wide singing competition at 14 in which she landed a record deal with Japanese producer, Tetsuya Komuro. Together, they released two EPs, ”Good News Bad News” and ‘Kwong Ying Zi Gan’. In July, 2000, she performed alongside Namie Amuro at the G8 Summit in Okinawa, Japan for the World Leaders. At age 15, she had her first No. 1 hit with the song, “Kwong Ying Zi Gan” in Taiwan. She has since then been featured in multiple ad campaigns for Marks & Spencer, Cathay Pacific, Motorola and Ponds globally.

In 2003, Celina went on to pursue a degree in Management from the prestigious London School of Economics and graduated at the top of her class with First Class Honors. Despite this penchant for the analytical, Celina followed her passion for the creative arts. She signed with music mogul Paco Wong (EMI) in 2007.

Celina’s breakout role came in 2007 after auditioning to be the lead role in Legendary Assassin. She was chosen over top local actresses to carry the heavy role. Since then, she has garnered a solid fan base across China as well as in the West in addition to her later roles in the Chinese films Love Connected, and All’s Well Ends Well; TV shows like Dolce Vita, Jade Solid Gold; and, regular appearances across TV channels especially in China including CCTV, Hunan TV, Zhejiang TV, Guangzhou TV and CETV.

Celina was invited to also sing the theme song for Legendary Assassin, “Ceng Jing Xin Teng”, which was performed live on TV and radio stations across Asia.

In 2009, she joined Echelon Talent, who brought her talent to the big screens in the USA. Her first role in a US movie was in the Man With the Iron Fists, as directed by the RZA, produced by Quentin Tarantino (starring Russell Crowe & Lucy Liu). Meanwhile, her fanbase grew in China with her appearing as lead actress in the web series, Wish Upon a Star, starring Asian idol Peter Ho.

Shortly after, she shot a short film alongside Sebastian Vettel, Formula 1 Triple Champion, in Drive of the Dragon, teaching him to fight and him teaching her to race around the tracks. This became a global phenomenon bringing Celina’s talents to the attention of European press & fans for the first time subsequently attracting a wide 651 million audience globally.

On the music side, at the end of 2012, Celina independently released her first self-written album across the internet to share with audiences globally her life & feelings in song. This coincided with her first role in the CW network series Arrow, where she plays the role of Shado. She will be continuing her role in Arrow all through 2013.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You won an Asia-wide singing competition at age of 14 years in which you landed a record deal with Japanese producer, Tetsuya Komuro and later began to pursue acting. You reached the pinnacle of success when your first major breakthrough in films happened, the lead role in “Legendary Assassin” in 2007. Tell us about your journey that took you to where you are now in the world of acting, as a singer and a model ?

Ms. Celina Jade: I started a career in entertainment very early on. I was 14 and still in school then. When my first CD proved successful, I was asked to drop out of school to pursue a full-time music career. It was tough choice, I had to ask myself a simple question, ‘Am I becoming someone I admire?’ the answer was no. So with my parents support, I decided to turn down the offer.

Few years later, having graduated from the London School of Economics, I decided to return to HK to give my passion in music a 2 year tryout. I signed to Paco Wong (head of Gold Typhoon, EMI). He helped me prep for my first album. He suggested I audition for Legendary Assassin because of my fighting skills which I’d learnt from my father (Roy Horan – the actor in Snake in the Eagles Shadow/ Game of death 2). I never would’ve guessed I’d land the leading role. After that, it was a steep learning curve. Today, I would say that music and acting are on par on my list of passions.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have selected a profession of being an actress in films and television that requires a lot of hard labor, technical soundness and excellence in different faculties to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?

Ms. Celina Jade: Personally, I don’t feel I am at the level of technical soundness or excellence yet but I’m flattered you’d use those terms. I’ve never really judged my work… By the time a piece of work come out, I’ve usually mentally already moved on to tackling my next challenge. The beauty of acting/ singing is in being in the moment. Once that moment is gone, there’s no point dwelling on it and judging it. I think that my ‘success’ comes from a combination of lucky timing and preparation. I love learning, so even though I’d call it preparation, it doesn’t feel like preparation to me.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Your are a leading an actress, singer, songwriter, model and martial artist. How do you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Ms. Celina Jade: Acting and singing are expressions of emotions. Songwriting is not much different than improvisation. I think these skill sets really compliment each other so I’m not sure I’d say it was that multi-dimensional. I do agree that martial arts is quite different though but that’s something I picked up from my dad.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine which you shall like to share?

Ms. Celina Jade: I am a Gemini and tend to get bored easily so I really mix up my routine. I like doing power & hot yoga, interval training, wakeboarding when it’s hot out. I also train in fighting with my dad and hike when the weather is cooler. In terms of toning, I like to do Tracy Anderson’s workout regime when I’m traveling from hotel to hotel.

In Hong Kong I train with an incredible personal trainer – Kape at Studeo Kape and he keeps my butt in shape too. Basically anything that keeps me distracted yet active is good in my books. I am lucky to have workout partners everywhere I go, it keeps me motivated.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Celina Jade: I generally eat pretty healthily. When I have to do a special scene or shoot, I get pretty strict with myself in terms of eating consciously. I almost never eat meat/ seafood anymore unless my body really craves it. I eat lots of veggies and ensure that my meals are as colorful as can be.

I like to drink juice in the mornings. When I am strict with myself, I try my best to stay away from any white processed foods as well as anything with ingredients I cannot understand such as preservatives/ natural flavorings/ E-this/ E-that/ MSG/ flavorings/ colorings etc… I will eat something with butter/ olive oil/ coconut oil but will not touch canola oil and all the other oils… I live next to an organic farm so I get my produce straight from them. I try to eat healthier desserts, if I can’t find them, I’d make them myself. I also steer clear of anything that says ‘low fat’ because it just means high sugar. I really don’t trust most of the food industry anymore so I put in the extra effort to see what I’m putting in my body.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Celina Jade: Firstly thank you for your compliment! In my opinion, skin and hair is the best reflective indiciator of your diet. What people often don’t realize is we are hungry for nutrition, not substance. This is why you can eat lots of pasta and still feel hungry sometimes (well, that and the sugar addiction). I eat consciously and drink lots of water every day. Because I eat a mainly veg diet, sometimes I lack the omega 3,6,9s.

I take udo oil to supplement that. I choose udo oil because it has coconut oil in it. we need saturated fats to absorb the 3,6,9s. That’s what I’ve learnt in my own trial and errors. Of course, you can get those in fish too and I do sometimes eat fish, but the quality of fish has really deteriorated unfortunately over the years, with our oceans being polluted with plastic, radiation etc…

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words for our inspiring and budding women singers and actresses who all are your fans, what should they do for their climb to the ladder of success in field of acting and singing?

Ms. Celina Jade: Finish your education. Having a backup removes the fears of failing and enables you to take the right risks in life. It also gives you a bottom line so you don’t have to feel forced into doing something you don’t believe in. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. If you are not working/ have free time, use that time to increase your skills set. Know your own value, if you don’t know it, no one else will.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Your first role in a US movie was in the “Man With the Iron Fists” as directed by the RZA, produced by Quentin Tarantino, starring Russell Crowe & Lucy Liu. Tell us about the experience of working in the US and with the top Hollywood director and co-stars?

Ms. Celina Jade: It was cool. They had a much bigger crew than the local films I’d starred in before the Iron Fists.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your inspiration and motivation that led you to your success in the world of acting, modeling and singing?

Ms. Celina Jade: My biggest inspirations funnily enough are my parents and my meditation teacher Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. They all bring light and guidance through my path – be it life, spirituality or entertainment and I am eternally grateful to them.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You shot a short film alongside Sebastian Vettel, Formula 1 Triple Champion “Drive of the Dragon” teaching him to fight and him teaching you to race around the tracks. This became a global phenomenon attracting a wide 651 million audience globally. Tell us about this endeavor of yours ?

Ms. Celina Jade: It was really really fun. Seb is the most exciting person to ride next to in a car and he is humorous and a joy to work with. I enjoyed being his Kung Fu teacher, and he’s made me a bit of a formula one fan now.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your experience working in the “CW network series Arrow” where you play the role of ‘Shado’?

Ms. Celina Jade: It has been a dream come true in terms of characters to play. I love that she is Arrow’s sensei, love interest and Slade’s evil subconscious. There are definitely 50 shades of Shado on Arrow. It’s an actors’ dream! And a girl’s dream to play such a sweet badass.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Celina Jade: ‘When women wake, mountains move.’
