Christine McGuinness Speaks Her Heart Out About Fitness, Healthy Eating & Autism

Wife of Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness, former Miss Liverpool and mum of three, Christine McGuinness is a fitness lover.

Born Christine Martin, the star was born in Merseyside in 1988. Taking on the world of beauty pageants, in 2007 she bagged the Miss Commonwealth title, and won Miss Liverpool, at the tender age of 18.

Soon after she modelled for Liverpool-based boutique Cricket in her bikini at the Liverpool Tennis Tournament. It was here that she met TV funnyman and Phoenix Nights star Paddy, 43. They married in 2011 at Thornton Manor in Wirral after three years together.

After giving birth to Felicity, Christine used social media to proudly show off her three-stone weight loss in three months. She also tracked both her pregnancies on Instagram, and her bid to keep healthy while they came to term. Before hitting the gym, she wrote online: “I can’t exercise for at least 6 weeks after my c-section but I’m not in any rush. Recovery is key.”

Lets read through Christine McGuinness’ spectacular journey in her exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In 2007 you bagged the Miss Commonwealth title, and won Miss Liverpool, at the tender age of 18. Since then you have modeled for several top brands. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

I was a typical teenage girl, overly conscious of the way I looked, and I thought all of the other girls in my school were stunning and popular and I wasn’t, I was extremely insecure. When my mum saw an advert looking for models to enter a beauty competition she thought this would really help boost my confidence. I went on to win ‘Miss Junior Merseyside” aged 14 along with a modeling contract which is where it all began. I went to Germany to represent England when I won ‘Miss Commonwealth” and then I went on to win ‘Miss Liverpool’ when I was 18.

I consider myself very lucky to have enjoyed a variety of modeling jobs, I covered numerous billboards, I filmed TV commercials, walked many catwalks and featured on the front cover of magazines. Every job was different which I loved. It is only since I became a mum to twins Leo and Penelope (4) and baby Felicity (1) that I have taken a step back from modeling to focus on raising my children.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a typical day in your life.

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

My morning starts with getting the twins fed and dressed for school, after I’ve dropped them off I spend some one-to-one time with Felicity before putting her back down for a nap. Her day nap is my only ‘me time’ to exercise at home and have a quick shower before she wakes. We then have lunch together and usually go out running errands before collecting the twins from school at 3:30. We always try to eat tea together as a family, with the children being fussy eaters I want to take every opportunity to show them a variety of food. It’s so important they see mummy and daddy eating and learn that meal times can be a nice social experience. After tea we always stick to the same routine with the children, its playtime followed by bath time, a story and up to bed at 7.

Once the children are in bed I do the housework and catch up on TV before taking myself up for some much-needed beauty sleep!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

After giving birth to your nine-month old child, you went through a fantastic three-stone weight loss in three months. Tell us about this incredible transformation.

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

I had a C-section with both of my pregnancies so I knew exercise wasn’t an option for a while as rest is key to a good recovery although to be honest I was far to tired to even think about going in the gym anyway. I didn’t put any pressure on myself. The weight loss was down to healthy eating and I am always on the go, running around after 3 children definitely helped me loose my baby weight. I started exercising to tone up around 9 months after having Felicity, I found it so much harder this time around, I’m getting much less sleep and hardly any time to myself so when I do get to exercise I have to make every minute count.

Even though physically I am not where I want to be with my fitness, I am healthy and I really appreciate and respect my body for giving me my 3 wonderful children.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine now? 

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

I like to do a variation of cardio, HIIT and weights. I don’t stick to a routine; I do what ever I’m in the mood for that day. On days that I feel like doing nothing I will pop the baby in the pram and go for a long walk so I am still doing some gentle exercise. When I have had a good night sleep and feel like I’ve got plenty of energy then I will interval run followed by some abdominal workouts. I love to train my core.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What kind of diet do you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

Green and protein is what I aim for.

At the minute I’m eating avocado with almost everything! Avocado with egg, avocado with chicken, avocado smash bagel. Its healthy and filling, it does contain fats but good fats. I do have a sweet tooth; I allow my self treats in moderation, mainly weekends. When I’m craving sugar I reach for the fruit bowl or a mixed veg and fruit smoothie.

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your hair care and skincare routine.

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

I love to use coconut shampoo and conditioner on my hair and coconut moisturizer on my skin. It works wonders and smells amazing. It is thanks to my coco butter that I only got a couple of stretch marks during my pregnancies and they a barely visible. I am lucky with my facial skin, Its rare that I will get spots or blemishes, I put this down to drinking lots of water and barely wearing make up. I often get asked what I use to cleanse my face; the truth is I only ever use water to wash my face.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

On your twins, Leo and Penelope’s fourth birthday, you revealed that the twins were on the autistic spectrum. How and when were you able to find out that your children were going through autism?

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

We have known that our twins are autistic since November 2016; they were formally diagnosed February 2017. We noticed obvious delays in their speech but we were not overly concerned as they were so young. They had a lack of eye contact and no social skills and they were both over sensitive to change, noise, smells, new faces etc. I just thought we had two big softies and their little quirks were a part of their personality.

It was only when they started nursery, the twins were almost 3 and we could see significant differences in their development in comparison to other children their age so we started the twins with Speech and language therapy and they also had regular support from SEN (special education needs). They recommended that we should see a pediatrician; we went along to meet with her in November 2016 and it didn’t take long for her to recognize that our twins have autism. Initially it was a huge shock for us, we had no idea. It was only after researching the condition for ourselves that we could see it was really obvious, if we had known more about autism prior to this meeting, I’m certain the twins would have been diagnosed and received help a lot sooner. This is why it is so important to raise awareness so more people recognize the signs and symptoms. Early intervention can make a huge difference for a child with autism.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

There are millions of parents who go through the same situation that you have, what advice would you give to these parents about autism awareness?

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

Remember that your child was perfect before their diagnosis and they’re still perfect afterwards. The diagnosis doesn’t change them at all; it just helps to explain their behavior sometimes.

Try to keep your focus on the child and not the autism or you will miss the intelligent, empathetic, overly observant, extraordinary child you have.

I honestly believe that special babies go to special parents so be confident that you can handle whatever hurdles come your way.

Know that your child doesn’t need to change; autism is a part of them it doesn’t define them. We just need to change the lack of understanding and open the door to educate others. Raising awareness is the best way to help our children and others that are so often misunderstood.

You also went through anorexia during your younger days. How were you able to come out of it? What advice would you give to the young girls out there to help them believe in themselves?

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

It started when I was very young, around 8 years old; initially it wasn’t about weight loss. I can only explain it like I accidentally fell into an eating disorder. I found the school dining hall quite overwhelming, it was loud and busy. I didn’t like to eat in front of people so I skipped school dinner’s everyday for most of my school years not realizing how it was affecting my body. Then when I became a teenager it became a real problem, I was body conscious and very insecure so staying slim was a priority to me, that’s when I lost control and sort help from a Dr. I’m so pleased that I did before I’d done any permanent damage. I would tell young girls to know that they deserve to live; they deserve to be healthy and live a long, happy life.

Tell us about your Top 5 Must-Follow Fitness & Nutrition Secrets.

Ms. Christine McGuinness:

Find time to work out regularly, even if its just 30 minutes a day. Put it into your daily routine so that time is dedicated to you, for you.

Listen to your body, rest when you need to and train harder when you feel you can, make every second count.

Drink water, water and more water.

Find exercise you enjoy otherwise it will feel like a chore. Whether it’s running, walking, dancing or swimming. Just get moving!

Love your body whilst you’re working for the one that you want. Your health is important, look after you.
