Claire Bevilacqua is exceptionally talented professional surfer. She is winner of 2010 Tidal 9 Women’s Pipeline Pro and was ranked world no.6 in 2006 in women surfing. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You begun surfing at the age of 14 years and has reached one of the landmark in your surfing career in 2003, when you were crowned as the Australian Junior Women’s Champion and in 2005, you were ranked World No.6 in the World Championship Tour (WCT). Tell us about your journey in your professional surfing career and what factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

I was born and raised in Perth with a single mum and older siblings so I was alone most of the time. The waves were usually bad and I had to ride my bike or walk to surf so I guess my work ethic and self motivation started there. Everything was an effort and hard work so if I wanted to improve I had to be hungry and determined. When I went on the world tour after high school it was tough. I was alone most the time in foreign places with little money but I hung in there and it payed off.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

I believe in keeping it simple. I surf as much as possible and if the waves are bad I run. I do a bit of basic exercises once a week like squats, lunges and sit ups. A few yoga poses when I’m tight. Other then that I just surf and stretch a little. I’m always active I don’t sit still.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit ?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

Mediterranean diet works for me. I eat natural and simple foods that are not processed. Lots of raw veggies and fruit. Vegetarian 95% unless my friends and I hunt the fish or meat myself ethically. I love my wood fired bread, that’s my staple.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

I use all natural products on my body and skin. I use vitamin e capsules and rose hip oil on my face, coconut oil on my body and organic hair conditioner. I do use kerastase hair serum though I need chemicals for my hair frizz sometimes.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding professional surfing girls who all are your fans, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of professional surfing?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

Nothing comes easy, if you want something don’t expect it to fall in your lap you have to be a go getter and put yourself out there. Don’t be afraid of failure or people saying no, it’s all just a test of character and how bad you want it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after when in 2003 you became the Australian Junior Women’s Champion. What a proud moment for you?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

I knew it was the beginning of my international career. Once I was the best in the country I knew I could be one of the best in the world.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have done bold photo shoots for 2009 ESPN Body Issue Magazine. What advice you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such bold modelling and do you wish to see more female surfers do the same ?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

It took me a long time to be proud of my muscles. I was so insecure in my youth from bullying because of my athletic figure. I think as you mature you become more confident. It was a breakthrough moment for me, I worked hard for my fitness so I was proud to promote it to others. I don’t know how to explain it I just didn’t care what others thought anymore and I embraced the opportunity.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In 2006, you collaborated with “Volcom” to create the “Bevo Signature Series” line of girl shorts. Kindly elaborate on this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

Volcom asked me to design a short and so the first thing I thought of was function, fashion and a bit naughty. I was a bit of a rebel back then so I think they represented that.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have now turned your focus to coaching, dedicating your time and energy to helping others learn surfing. Tell us about this endeavor of yours ?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

I began to coach and do public speaking in my early 20s just for fun and because communication came easy to me and I loved to help others through health and fitness. My Surf coaching has evolved really naturally and effortlessly in ways. I did all the self trial, education and exploration while I was on tour so I put it all together to create a real individual approach to training others. I have 15 years experience in the industry and have worked with so many of the worlds best athletes, mentors, coaches and sports therapists. I feel very confident when I take others under my wing but also learn more every time I teach.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Apart from Australia you surfed and won since turning pro several competitions including The Outer Banks Pro in North Carolina, The Hello Kitty Boardfest at Huntington Beach, California, 1st place Pipeline Pro Hawaii, 2009 and 1st place tidal Pipeline Pro, 2010. How you are able to adapt to these foreign locations and different kind of environment to compete professionally in surfing ?

Ms. Claire Bevilacqua:

The best thing I ever did whenever I got to a new place was make friends with the locals. I lived with the locals, ate with them and built up these relations.

That way I always felt safe and connected no matter where I was or how dangerous. It wasn’t always glamorous. Some comps were in Durban and Rio and Mexico, all were super ghetto.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?
