Denise Herrmann is a German cross-country skier and biathlete. She has competed in FIS Cross-Country World Cup since 2009. Herrmann has won several medals at the World Cup events. In April 2016 she announced that she would switch to competing in biathlon for the following season, not ruling out competing in cross-country skiing completely from the future.

She was born in Schlema/Saxony and grew up in Bockau in the Ore Mountains. In her childhood, she discovered the passion for winter sports, especially for cross-country skiing. After successfully completing her high school diploma in 2009 at the Gymnasium Oberwiesenthal and successful years as a junior sportswoman (3rd place JWM and 2nd place U23 World Championship), she decided for the route of the sport. Since that time, she has also been a sports officer with the Bundeswehr Sports Support Group.

Until the spring of 2016, she was a member of the German cross-country national team and experienced a very beautiful, intense and successful time. In the World Cup she reached several podium places in the Sprint and became 2014 2nd in the Sprintweltcup and 9 in the overall World Cup. After last season, she opted for a new challenge and found this with the change to biathlon.

Lets read through Denise Herrmann’s spectacular journey from skiing into biathlon in her exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been competing in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup since 2009 and reached the pinnacle of success by winning several medals at the World Cup events. Walk us through this spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

As a young girl I was often skiing with my dad and some other kids in my hometown. I really enjoyed it. Some years later I started to participate in competitions. In those days my passion for cross country skiing was born. In 2001 I went to a special sports boarding school in Oberwiesenthal and started to train professional. In order to that I took part in my first international races. In a good symbiotic with school and sport I passed my examination (A-Levels) in 2007. I started my career as a professional athlete. In the summer of 2010 I changed my training center from Oberwiesenthal to the Bavarian village Ruhpolding. This was my current chosen life spot. From the day I started skiing professional until I made it to the Olympics in 2014 I always worked really hard on myself. I set goals and did every workout as good as possible to reach it. The progress wasn’t always easy and fast. But Step by step I made it with all my strength, trust in myself and passion from a cross country world cup skier to a girl who was able to fight for medals in world cup, world championchip and Olympic events.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

My favorites are some workouts for the whole stability of the body like crunches.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

As an athlete it is important to choose your food well. It should be fresh and healthy. I try to optimize this part as much as I can. Cross country skiing / Biathlon are both endurance sports which require a lot of energy. After every training I eat much, especially after hard intensity workouts. It is good to calculate your energy consumption and react in your daily nutrition. If you have a small overview over your own consumption it makes it easier to be sure that you eat enough. In periods of competition it is also helpful to use additional supplements for a good balance in carbs and proteins.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding skiers who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

I think it is important to start not too late with skiing so you have enough time to learn quite a lot of technical things playfully.

But what is most important is to have fun. Enjoy to push yourself. Set goals. Work for them – hard! There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs and this might be a long way but I’m sure you make it! 😉

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In April 2016, you announced that you would switch to competing in biathlon for the following season, tell us more about it.

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

Biathlon is a very interesting sport to me. Since I changed my training center to Ruhpolding I was confronted with it every day, so it came more and more in my mind. Five years ago, in 2012, the German Ski Federation invited me to a shooting camp with the possibility to change the discipline. At this time I wasn’t ready for this huge step but it never left my mind. After the season 2015/16 I decided to do this step and go all in. I am very happy with my decision and every day is a new day with a new challenge. Over the past months I learned a lot and there is still more to come. We will see how it works until the next Olympic Games. I know it will be hard to be part of this strong and successful German team. Nevertheless, I hope I can make my dreams come true.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your preparations for the future Games and Championships.

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

I try to have a perfect training every day and stay healthy. Those are my main goals. It is important to work in your basics, improve your personal weaknesses and get stronger in total. For me that is on one hand to optimize the endurance training and on the other hand my shooting especially under high stress level.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

While playing professional sports, athletes often face injuries and other difficulties, would you like to tell the audience about how to cope up and make a comeback after an injury?

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

It is normal for an athlete to have some periods which are hard and sometimes some steps backwards. You have to handle that because it is part of the life. Most important is to focus on a new goal and come back stronger. Always stay patient and have a plan in your mind what you want to do next.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With a massive following who look upto you and follow you, how does it feel that you are able to influence and inspire the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?

Ms. Denise Herrmann:

I am really thankful for the massive support I get every day. Thanks to all my fans out there.

I am glad that I am a role model but I don’t think about this. I just try to be who I am and present myself like this to the world.
