Radio Presenter Emma Conybeare Shares Her Incredible Success Story With Women Fitness!

Over her career Emma has presented for Google and  hosted live events for Google+ including the World Wide Live Backstreet Boy Hangout. From live events to online tutorials and fashion ideas, she is also the main presenter for VideoJug Networks social platform POSE. Emma has been featured on Channel4 Tribes talking about the Youth of London. This Summer Emma hosted Sky’s Street Velodrome interviewing guest such at Boris Johnson.

In her spare time she is the sole creator of ‘Young in the City’, a blogging and vlogging platform for cool things, fashion and food in and around London.

Her current series on her YouTube channel  is ‘Lifestyle Mathematics’ – every episode tackles different mathematical problems which occur in everyday situations (such splitting a restaurant bill or working out what percentage discounts equal to) this draws on her degree in Mathematics and Statistics and her need to try and help others.

Last Summer Emma organised and hosted her first gig “Emma CB Acoustic Sessions”. Interviews and live performances were filmed and uploaded to watch again on a separate YouTube ‘Emma CB Acoustic Sessions’. Emma CB’s Acoustic Sessions were aimed at the New and Emerging music talent that need more exposure, live coverage and experience.

Emma Conybeare shares her incredible and inspiring life journey in an exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are an extremely popular and successful Model, Presenter and Radio DJ. Tell us about your incredible journey so far and how it all began?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: Where do I start on the journey of my life, well I suppose, I didn’t start off saying I wanted to be a model, presenter, DJ. I went to University, followed the route that most people take. School Uni, get a good job. I did a Mathematics and Statics degree, I liked a challenge and I always wanted to stand out. Took up the challenge and passed with a 2:1. Anyways coming out of University I was one of those students struggling to decide what I wanted to do with myself, I liked customer facing jobs but having a Maths degree I wanted something exciting like Trading but I was stuck in a rut and not getting a job, unemployed, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I started sending some pictures out to agencies and this was where a starter agency, Mission Models that took me under their wing and developed my book. At the age of 21, I think I was still naive to the world, thinking things would happen at the click of a finger but rejection out weighed all the positives. Being stubborn and liking challenges I was not willing to give up. So I kept working hard… The thing that I had against me was my height coming up at 5ft5 people wouldn’t even give a casting… but what I lacked in height, I gained in personality, confidence and my quick wit.

From there I got the passion from Presenting, and I started off pitching to different companies thinking of YouTube videos to train and teach myself how to present, interview people etc.  I did a few events and one of the biggest gig was interviewing Backstreet Boys Live with an audience on the Google Hangout world wide, I definitely got chucked in the deep end, but I swam.

Over the years I chipped away at the Presenting gaining experience, footage and building up a good portfolio. Having no agent. everything was dependent on myself but like I said I liked challenges, I wanted this so badly I didn’t have a back up plan. Plus having the ball in your court meant you were in control of your life. After committing my soul for several years I couldn’t look back, every time I got rejected, I couldn’t have doubts because deep down I knew I was good, I knew my time was coming.

I found a niche in the market, it was radio, I started off doing two years at a local radio station, training myself from all the errors I made. Until I was put into contact with somebody at Global and this is where my Radio Presenting career took off at Capital Xtra. Nothing was smooth running and I can’t say it was the easiest time for myself. The amount of pressure you put on yourself because this was your break, your dream but over the year I trained myself to deal with pressure as a strength.

My modelling career was gradual, getting a few modelling gigs here and there, I was in several Adidas campaigns even on the Superstar Original advert with David Beckham and Rita Ora. Me being me, liked being different and changed my hair styles a lot but some of the times it worked in my favour when I had a short hair, I was the perfect character Guitar Hero Live Game… yes you will see me shouting at my band since I was their manager, funny that.

This year was one of my most successful years and I am a strong believer that what ever career you take, you need experience, meeting clients showing your charisma learning how to put on a performance when you meet people. Like I said I have to make up for my height with my personality.

Just recently I was the face of Starter Active Sports wear being the first female face for this brand. I’ve been on several campaigns such as Pringles (Don’t Laugh) EE, Soak.com Air Lengus. It’s been an exciting year in terms of Modelling and Presenting but it’s about timing because I worked so hard for this. At the start of the year I was still juggling several jobs, Waitressing, Hostings, Bar work in order to survive in London. It nice now how I have a bit more free time for myself. But if you think you will get your dream job at the click of the fingers, it’s like winning the lottery, highly unlikely. Hard work does pay off.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Introduce us to a day in the life of “Emma Conybeare”?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: Ok well I’m not like the usual human beings going to bed at night time. Since I’m on radio 2am-6am I start my day from 11:30pm.

Wake up, do show prep for Capital Xtra head to the studio for 1am where I have to record some Voice over links. 2am-6am I go live on the national radio station.

Monday to Friday, when I get home from from radio between the hours of 8am and 3pm I either edit, film videos for my YouTube Channel. Go to meetings with Companies, clients speak to potential production companies about my ideas of different TV shows, documentaries etc. I also squeeze in emails, phone calls and modelling castings, now when I get booked for a job my schedule goes out the window and I end up cramming in more hours in the day… if that makes sense.

At 3pm I relax and go to sleep, well unless I have a shoot… sometimes this means I only grab a few hours sleep before I go back on air. I’ve done a 32hour day before that killed me.

My weekend starts on Friday at 6am when my show finishes so I struggle to stay awake… sometimes I meet friends and try to get normal sleep in even if I go to bed at 10-11pm I wake up at 5am which is fine because I get an early fitness session in.

Work hard, player harder so try not to decline an event. If I’m going to an event I have to split my sleep and get a few hours sleep after my show, and a few hours after the event and before my radio show.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: I try not let my disfunction sleeping pattern rule my life. I’ve always been sporty from a young age, Swimming Nationally and representing Hertfordshire for Cross Country Running from a young age, been fit and healthy has been droned into my body. If I didn’t do any exercise, the sleep deprivation causes anxiety and depression so to off set this, I make sure I go running around Hampstead Heath or Alexandra Palace in London twice a week regardless of the weather. The fresh air clears my head, relaxes me but also motivates me to do other work.

Every Saturday I do aerobics, sometimes its nice to have a class, dancing high intensity being told what to do really helps.

Once or twice a week I do Pilates or Yoga to destress, stretch. I normally do these classes mid week as I really don’t have the energy to do something too active, something with low intensity. I always say it’s good to mix things up but also to have booked classes so even when I am really tired I hate letting people down and cancelling things.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: In order for my body to have energy and to function. I have to be on my game all the time. Radio is a lot of pressure I can’t afford to be hungry because I know my brain won’t function.

Monday-Friday I have similar eating patterns. When I wake up at 11pm I normally have a slice of granary bread with Nutella with a coffee this automatically injects my body with energy and caffeine.

When I get to radio at 2am I have a cup of tea with Brivita biscuits…. I’m a sucker for dinking biscuits in tea. At 4am I have a bowl of porridge with nuts seeds and peanut butter. Along side a banana.

When I finish my show I have something light, I get an adrenaline come down and I’m starving so I have a poached egg with half an avocado on a small slice of seed brown bread.

At 1 or 2pm I have something really light to eat like stir fry, sushi. Here I aim just to have protein and veg and little Carbohydrates.

On Friday I have this as my cheat day as I try and stay awake for 20-24 hours so I’m constantly hungry.

Saturday and Sunday I’m back to being quite strict so three clean meals and two snacks like fruit or yoghurt.

I am quite strict when it comes to food, I don’t like fast food or really heavy meals in the week. I will be really sluggish. I snack on clean things like nuts and avoid chocolate and sweets, unless my body is really tired and I need the energy kick.

But if I’ve been invited out to dinner or lunch I do treat myself. Life’s not fun unless you live it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: I swear by evening primrose, not only do I take the supplement every day to keep hormones level normal it’s also good for my skin.

My skin like most females will flare up when I’m stressed or hormonal. I always say when I go on a long run outside my skin sweats and opens my pores up. A clean diet also helps with skin.

My Mother is a wise women and she gets me into having a Microdermal abrasion once a month, it’s also good to remove excess dead skin. I do invest a fare bit of money into skin care. My night cream is Dećlore and Morning cream is Elizabeth Arden. As she said I’m not getting any younger so I have to start looking after this face of mine.

I actually don’t have any special products for my hair. A good shampoo and Conditioner John Freida. Once a week when I put on my Dr Adlai honey clay mask I also put a leave in Conditioner. I also try to avoid washing my hair everyday too.

I’m quite lucky my hair is dead straight so I try not straighten it to much. Although I always wanted curtly hair my dad would call my curly totes because I was so straight.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your current Top 5 Fashion Must-Haves.

Ms. Emma Conybeare: My Top 5 Fashion Must Haves:

A Bomee Jacket, I’m in love with my green one. Warm and goes with everything.

A decent pair of black boots, I love the over knee ones at the moment. So mod so on trend.

Nike Air Max Trainers, I have so many meetings around London which entails miles of walking. You can get away wearing trainer to meetings as you can dress hip and stylish.

I love smock dresses they so easy to wear, when it gets colder you can wear a pair of tights. On a night out jazz it up with jewellery and a pair of high heeled boots. Plus it means you don’t have to think about matching anything. Also you can avoid showing off you bloated belly if you out for dinner, definitely my cheat outfit.

Shirt dresses, I have so many styles, denim, floral and plain. You can wear these in so many different ways, bare legs with knee high boots. With tights and shorts with the shirt tucked in. Great if you’re going on a night out and you can’t judge what sort of night it’ll be.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have interviewed the pop sensation boy band Hanson, The Rascals, Delilah, Ben Pearce, Klangkarussel, Denise Pearson, Throwing snow, Mike Hough and Youtube phenomenon Esme Denters. Share with us one of your most memorable experience from these interviews?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: I think like most people you interview when you start talking to them you almost forget who they are. I had to interview Boris Johnson once, it was so Bizarre we got onto the topic of French Onions, I mean how could you get back on course after talking about French Onions?

Hanson were incredible to interview, they had so much to say I was in ore of them I generally felt as though they could of talk for days. They were so passionate in everything they were saying I was mesmerised.

But I suppose the highlight of my career and one of my first ever Presenting gigs was interviewing Backstreet Boys. It was live on the Google Hangout World Wide. It was a live stream going out to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. I can still remember the buzz of the event, at the start of the event I’ve never been so nervous in my life. When the nerves dropped I loved the buzz, it was so euphoric. Not to mention I got to meet the boy band I grew up with, I generally had to try and contain myself and not act like an over excited little girl, which was extremely hard.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us more about your Youtube Channel, “The Hangout”. Give us your Top 3 Tips for someone whose wanting to start a new Youtube Channel.

Ms. Emma Conybeare: I’m a Presenter so I use my YouTube Channel as an online portfolio to my work.  YouTube is so saturated with bloggers, comedians and sketching. What ever I put on my YouTube is just me, you want to show yourself off as much as possible.

At the moment I’m working on my Radio Diaries. Since I have the over night show it’s rare people listen to me so I’ve given them the option to watch my best bits instead.

I like making a variety of Videos, what ever crosses my mind, funny aspects but also with me having a Mathematics and Statistic Degree, I’ve made videos on simple Mathematics in every day life.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding models and presenters, who all are your followers and shall like to know from you for their climb to the ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Emma Conybeare: The advice I would give to people is, just enjoy making videos for people’s entertainment because you like making the videos. Don’t just YouTube because you want the fans and the money prospects. I’m proud of every video I’ve made as soon as there’s structure and “having” to do videos that’s when it’s not fun anymore.

Tip 1. Find something that you’re passionate about because when it’s come to you talking on Camera people invest time in you and your passion.

Tip 2. I’m not saying to copy other Youtubers but watch as many different videos as possible, do your research. How long the video needs to be, the descriptions, the tags. Analyse their videos and see how you can change it to make yours better.

Tip 3. Try and think of a niche topic that’s different. YouTube is saturated in bloggers doing all the same thing. They started way before you so your video will never be at the top of the page. Do something different and unique.

At the start of my career I was very naive to the whole situation. How I thought it would have been so much easier to get your break.

I was stubborn and so determined, if people want to get into Presenting or Modelling you have to grow a thick skin and be resilient. This world is all about rejection, how to deal with rejection. It’s not about the jobs you book. It just needs to be your life, if you want stability and money and a easy life. This is not you scene.

Like all things you have to do things because you love them, don’t do it because you want to be famous or seek attention. As soon as your true to the real reason for doing what you’re doing you will love everyday of it.

But trust me there are so many dark days being frustrated feeling rejected. You need to be that sort of person who’s independent and stays true to yourself.

Things don’t happen over night, work hard see it as an internship that could last 3-5 years before getting a break in your career. You need to find a way to stand out, think of different ways you can promote yourself. And if you have an agent, work alongside your agent be a team and don’t let one person dictate your life.
