Australian Actress Esther Anderson Reveals Her Journey to Success!

Esther Anderson

Esther Jackie Anderson is an Australian actress and model. She is best known for her role as Charlie Buckton on the Australian soap opera Home and Away. She was nominated for a Gold Logie Award at the 2012 Logies.

Anderson was a successful model. She was based in Japan for six years and has travelled to Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Korea and Europe for work. She is signed to Chadwick Models. She has modelled for Patons, a knitting company. Also for Bride, Everybody and Zenzue.

Anderson began her television career in Japan appearing in ads, during which she decided to move back to Melbourne to take acting courses as she wanted to begin acting and presenting. In 2007, Anderson landed a role on the Victorian version of Australian travel show Postcards. She remained in the role for a year until she had the chance to audition for Home and Away. Anderson won the role of Charlie Buckton in 2008. She decided to quit the role in 2011 and she filmed her final scenes in August that year.

Anderson later starred in a short film titled Breathless playing the role of Jodie, a woman in mourning over her deceased child. In August 2012, it was announced Anderson had landed a role in the pilot of Siberia, which was filmed in Canada.

Esther Anderson is an exceptionally talented Australian actress. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You started modeling at an early age and was earlier based at Japan. You started pursuing acting and reached the pinnacle of success when you played role of Charlie Buckton in Home and Away and excelled in number of films and television shows. Tell us about your journey that took you to where you are now in the world of acting and as a model?

Ms. Esther Anderson: As a kid growing up I always wanted to be an actress. I remember watching Kylie Minogue playing “Charlene” on the long running soap “Neighbours” and thinking that would be a great job. I remember asking my mum if I could make a living from that kind of work (It didn’t seem like work in my mind, the idea of getting payed to do something that was so creative and fun seemed like a dream job to me, but even at a very young age I was worried about security. It was important for me to get good grades so I could get a decent job and make a living and have a roof over my head -:)

During my primary school years I would often put on performances with the other kids in my street for our neighbours to come and watch. I loved the idea of entertaining people and making them happy. I still find this one of the most rewarding parts of my job now. Being able to move people in some way with the stories you are telling.

When I got to high school, our drama department was mainly musical theatre and I can’t sing to save myself so I took up dancing instead. I was involved in our schools Rock Eisteddfod each year, that went on to win numerous state finals and the national title my first year. I loved being a part of the collaboration and the comradery we developed with our peers. It was one of the most memorable parts of my high school experience, I was however still hungry to explore acting as I hadn’t had that opportunity yet. I think the closest thing I had experienced was playing the role of the lead Barrister in our mock trials at the Geelong courts. As part of our legal studies curriculum we would have mock trials against other schools where we would play the different roles of prosecutors, defendants, barristers etc in the framework of a case.

I was always the leading Barrister and I loved this role. I thought after doing this I wanted to be either a lawyer, a criminal psychologist or a police women. In hindsight I realise it was the performance side of it that I loved most. I did work experience at the Geelong police station and realised I could never be a police woman (except on-screen) , I did work experience at the Geelong courts and realised I didn’t want to be a lawyer either, and I went to Swinburne University in Melbourne and studied first year Psychology only to realise I didn’t want to be a psychologist.

I then decided to do what many Australians do, and I deferred from my degree at University to take a year off and back pack overseas to hopefully figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. I had a fantastic experience travelling through Europe and picking up work in bars in different countries and I thought to myself I’m not ready to go back home yet, when I received an email from my modelling agency in Melbourne saying that Japanese scouts had been over and liked my portfolio and wanted to offer me a contract to model in Japan. The timing was perfect and I decided I had nothing at all to lose and everything to possibly gain. My first contract was for 3 months and I had a very successful trip in Tokyo.

I fell in love with Japan and was so grateful for such a lucrative opportunity at such a very young age (I was then 20 years old) I continued to then go back and forth to Japan in total I think 12 times, spending around 6 months a year there over the next 6 years between Tokyo and Osaka. I also received contracts in Korea, Hong Kong, Hamburg, Munich, Bangkok, and New York where I worked for brands such as Clairol, Oil of Olay and Victoria’s Secret amongst others.

Again the most enjoyable jobs for me were the television commercials and it cemented in my mind the need to return to Australia to pursue television and acting. So I moved back to Australia and continued modelling in Melbourne while I began acting courses. I worked with several different teachers over the next three years, at one point doing three different classes a week with three different teachers. During this time I also did a course in presenting.

I wanted to to do everything I could to get my foot in the door and I thought presenting would also be a great experience and introduction to television. I was soon given a role as a presenter on the Victorian travel show ‘Postcards’. It was a fantastic experience being able to travel around the state to all the finest wineries and day spas covering stories in Melbourne and country Victoria. It was after a year on Postcards that T.V. personality Glenn Ridge from the long running game show “Sale of the Century” saw me and approached me in regard to being a co-host with him on “The Boatique”. This led me to many covering stories on boats in many beautiful water destinations including the Whitsundays, Tasmania, and Vanuatu. During this time I was able to secure an acting agent and I was excited about the opportunity to begin auditioning for drama. It was in 2008 and at my third acting audition that I won the role of Charlie Buckton in hit television show “Home and Away”.

This opportunity was what I had been working toward and saw me relocate from Melbourne to Sydney within 5 days of receiving the news I had been given the role.

During the course of the next three and a half years on the show I learned as much as I could and relished in an environment that allowed me to work with and learn from veteran actors like Ray Meagher, Georgie Parker and Marcus Graham. It was in 2010 that I was nominated alongside Ray Meagher for a Gold Logie, Australia’s most prestigious television award for the most outstanding personality in television. I was also nominated the same year for a silver logie, for the post popular actress in television.

Following the Logies that year I was invited to be part of “Dancing with the Stars” which saw me battle it out against other celebrities in a number of Ballroom and Latin dances. I remained a contender in the competition through to week 8.

After completing my final scenes in Home and Away at the end of 2011 I was nominated again for a second Gold logie and Silver logie at the 2012 Logie awards. In 2012 I then moved to Los Angeles to continue pursuing an acting career there. It was after 6 months of auditioning that I was cast in the mystery Drama “Siberia” with the Oscar Nominated producer Michael Ohoven at the helm. Siberia was later picked up by the NBC network and aired season one in July 2013.

During the period of 2012 to 2014 I have returned to Australia a number of times to work on different projects…including reprising the role of Charlie Buckton on Home and Away, as well as filming several commercials as the face of Australia’s largest telecommunications brand “Telstra” . I also currently appear as the face of new Underwear label “Tuffys and Tuffetts” with NRL star Beau Ryan. Earlier in 2014 I completed work on the feature film “Broken Contract” that was shot in Perth.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have selected a profession of being an actress in films and television that requires a lot of hard labor, technical soundness and excellence in different faculties to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?

Ms. Esther Anderson: Acting is the one passion of mine that I have realized is limitless in terms of being able to learn and grow. There will never come a time that I know everything there is to know. There is no ceiling to what you can learn as an actor. This is sometimes daunting, as at times you can feel like the more you learn the more you realise how much you don’t know. More importantly for me though, this is a blessing as it keeps me hungry and motivated to grow and develop my skills further. I’ll never get bored as an actress as I realise I’ll never know all there is to know. For me this is why its important to continue training throughout my whole career. It keeps me learning and discovering new things about the craft and myself. Plus I enjoy it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Your are a leading actress, model, television star and brand ambassador. How you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Ms. Esther Anderson: I think balancing the sort of lifestyle that comes with being an actress really boils down to loving what you do. The older I get the more I value how precious my time is with my family and friends which makes it harder to be away from them. If I didn’t love what I do so much I wouldn’t be able to do it. But there is something about the acting bug that once you catch it there is no getting rid of it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Esther Anderson: I’v never been a huge fan of the gym. I’v always enjoyed group sports or dancing or outdoor activities to stay active, however I’v recently found a fantastic gym in LA that is high intensity circuit training. You have a trainer leading the class and about 30 people around you to keep you motivated and you can also make it easier or harder for yourself depending on what weights you use and how hard you want to push yourself. Its really about keeping fit and I use small weights to build strength.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Esther Anderson: I’v always been a healthy eater, 90% of the time and I think that’s the key. When you eat healthy food more often than not, then that’s what you enjoy and your body craves. I feel good and I have energy after eating well so that’s why I generally eat that way. I’ll make sure my breakfast includes plenty of fibre with some protein added, and I love eating a nice big salad for lunch with plenty of fresh ingredients and either chicken, or fish or tofu. I try to make sure I add some protein to every meal. Although it seems to be hot weather all year round in LA I still like a hot meal for dinner. I make healthy mexican dishes with extra vegetables and thai curries and asian style stir fry’s. I am addicted to quinoa at the moment.

I’m substituting it for rice in a lot of my dishes and it’s also great in salads. It’s high in protein and a really yummy grain. I have a super green formula in the morning to supplement my diet if im busy and feel like I’m not getting enough vegetables or if I’m feeling a bit run down. I won’t lie, I do love some dark chocolate and a glass of wine most nights and the occasional burger on a weekend but I never feel guilty indulging every now and then because it’s balanced out with all the healthy food I nourish my body with the other 90% of the time.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Esther Anderson: My skin regime has always been pretty simple, just cleansing and moisturizing and I’ll exfoliate once a week. In the last year however I felt I needed something extra as my skin was looking a bit tired and I want to keep it glowing for as long as possible. I now have started using a serum morning and night before I apply my moisturiser and I have also started using rosehip oil. I add a tiny bit of Rosehip oil to my moisturiser and also dab a bit to the area around my eyes to help avoid wrinkles. to keep my hair from splitting and to protect it from heat and styling my favourite product is Argan Oil. Its moisturising but doesn’t leave it too heavy like some oils.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words for our inspiring and budding models and actresses who all are your fans, what should they do for their climb to the ladder of success in field of acting and modelling?

Ms. Esther Anderson: I think the best advice I got was given to me indirectly from a numerology type thing my auntie did for me one day when I was about 12 or 13. After some calculations you were left with a few different numbers that meant different things, and one of them was my “life challenge” number. I remember I got 0 for it and I remember being quite worried this meant I wouldn’t amount to do anything in my life.

My aunty then told me it was actually the opposite, she told me it meant I could do anything I wanted to do if I put my mind to it. And so I really believed that to be true. I stuck the piece of paper up on my wall as a reminder that I could do anything I wanted to do if I really put my mind to it. I still think that is the most important thing, to believe in yourself and to back that up by working hard toward your dreams. Anything is possible but you have to believe it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have acted in number of films, television series and shows. Which has been your most memorable experience?

Ms. Esther Anderson: I look at every opportunity that I’v been given as a real honour, as well as being a chance to do something new and exciting, but I’d have to say my experiences on the television series “Home and Away” and “Siberia” have been the most rewarding so far. Being a series regular on a show allows you the luxury of time for your character to develop and evolve, which allows you to really immerse yourself in it. I love the close relationships you build with the other actors and the potential for storylines to go in so many directions.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your inspiration and motivation that led you to your success in the world of acting and modeling?

Ms. Esther Anderson: I’d have to say my parents have been my biggest motivation. I’v always wanted them feel proud of me. As much as I get embarrassed when they show friends (or strangers) an article on me or a photo from the paper, at the end of the day I’m just so grateful they are happy and proud and I have people in my life that care about me so much. I also can’t help but be inspired by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne and Cate Blanchett to name a few, who have paved the way for other aspiring Australian actresses on international scale.
