Fit Bottomed Girls’ Jennipher Walters Shares Her Fit Lifestyle!

The Fit Bottomed Girls were a team originally made up of Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead. While the pair is sometimes so twin-like it’s scary, they both bring different perspectives to the FBG table. Due to the site’s increasing popularity, Jenn and Erin have expanded the FBG team to include a new partner (FBG Kristen!) and various contributing writers, bringing new content and other fun, fresh perspectives to the site. The FBGs pride themselves on being real girls — not gladiators. They understand that health and fitness should be about enjoyable activities and the occasional treat, not about torturous workouts and deprivation.

As co-founder and co-author of The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet and Editor-in-Chief at Fit Bottomed Girls and Fit Bottomed Zen, Jennipher has several fitness credentials under her belt: She is an ACE-certified personal trainer, health coach, and advanced health and fitness specialist, and an AFAA-certified group exercise instructor.

Jenn has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and an MA in health journalism from the University of Minnesota. She has also written for numerous online publications including Shape magazine, The Huffington Post, SparkPeople and Diets in Review. In her free time, Jenn can be found doing HIIT workouts with her husband, making a mean green smoothie, running with her pup and snuggling with her daughter.

Fit Bottomed Girls’ mission is to show the people of this world that being healthy doesn’t have to be boring. They’re committed to creating content, products and events that inspire and empower women (and men!) to find the fun in fitness, ditch the diet drama and embrace their inner confidence to help them realize that, yes, they are worth taking care of.

It’s not about having the perfect body, seeing a certain number on the scale or changing yourself into something you’re not.

So we thought of catching up with one of the founding members of The Fit Bottomed Girls’ Jennipher Walters!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You and Erin started the famous fitness blog, Fit Bottomed Girls which has now become a huge success, empowering and inspiring women all over the world. Walk us through this incredible journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Jennipher Walters:

Erin and I met when we were both working for a magazine publishing company in the Kansas City area. We quickly noticed the big similarities in our lives: We both lived in Lawrence, Kansas, while our boyfriends were attending graduate school, and we were both enduring a lengthy and boring 50-minute commute. We soon became carpooling buddies, and then realized that not only were we making the commute more fun and saving the planet one tank of gas at a time, we were also forming a friendship. While we’d usually talk about reality TV and work, we’d also discuss workouts. I’m more of the “health nut,” along with being a certified personal trainer, so I’d convince Erin to walk with me over lunch or try Zumba.

Funny enough, it wasn’t until Erin moved states away and after I’d overcome some of my own body image issues that we came up with the idea of a positive body image fitness blog — effectively marrying our shared love of writing and fitness. It’s crazy to look back on how it used to be just Erin and I giggling on the phone to now having an amazing third business partner Kristen Seymour, two books, four websites and about a dozen writers and editors around the country!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life in the FBG Team.

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

We all work from home in different cities, so a typical day involves a lot of phone calls, texts and emails! We all spend most of our time writing, editing and working with different brands on various campaigns. We also share a lot of funny videos and articles — and high-five each other for working out. (And, yep, we all make time for workouts and self care!)

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

I do a little bit of everything. I try to get to the gym for high-intensity interval training (usually involving weights) two to three times a week. Plus, I walk my dog every day, and go out for a run with my dog and my daughter in the stroller once or twice a week. I squeeze in some yoga and foam rolling here and there, too, but so wish I did it more often.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

I follow the 80/20 rule when it comes to food. 80 percent of the time I eat really healthy stuff that makes me feel AWESOME. Then 20 percent of the time I eat whatever I want while being mindful and not have any guilt about it. It works for me.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding fitness trainers who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of fitness?

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

Get certified and always keep learning! Know that different approaches are going to work for different people. There’s no one single “right” way to be healthy. So help people to find what works for them — with a whole lot of love (because the brain usually needs as much training as the body does to be confident).

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of fitness?

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

Hands down, our readers. They’re amazing and the reason we’re here! After that? Bob Harper has seriously been such an inspiration to us and so kind of us: http://fitbottomedgirls.com/2016/09/podcast-episode-5-freakin-bob-harper-talks-about-everything/.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are also the founder and author of The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet. Tell us your Top 3 Favorite Healthy Meals.

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

I love something we call “Big Ass Salads.” You can never go wrong with this one: http://fitbottomedgirls.com/2012/04/big-ass-salads-are-my-specialty/

Also, I’ve been perfecting this slow cooker soup recipe and I love it. Actually have it cooking as we speak! http://fitbottomedeats.com/2016/10/african-chicken-peanut-soup-recipe/

Lastly, fish tacos are my jam. Some cod cooked in the oven over sliced cabbage that’s been mixed with greek yogurt and wasabi with mango in a warm corn tortilla? Simple and awesome.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Give us your Top 5 Tips for women wanting start a fitness blog.

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

  1. Find your voice and mission. There’s only one you, so be you!
  2. Be consistent and post regularly.
  3. Figure it out as you. You don’t need all the answers to start. Just start. Plus, that’s what Google is for. 🙂
  4. Write ahead and have an editorial calendar. It’s SO helpful to have a plan and know what you’re going to write ahead of time. Also really helps when life gets in the way.
  5. Be professional and know your worth. You’re not “just a blogger.” You’re cultivating a community!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With an audience of over 183k followers on your Facebook page @fitbottomedgirls you’re a social media sensation and an internet fitness star. How does it feel that you are able to influence the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

Amazing. And totally, absolutely humbling.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Jenniper Walters:

That you are beautiful just as you are! You can’t hate yourself healthy, but you can love yourself happy … and from that self love make healthier decisions. It’s not about the number on the scale. It’s about how good you can feel — inside and out.
