Gesa Felicitas Krause

Gesa Felicitas Krause is a German athlete who specialises in the 3000 m steeplechase.

In the 2013 European Athletics U23 Championships, she won in a new championship record time of 9:38.91 min. Her greatest achievement to date is the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships.

Lets read through Gesa Felicitas Krause’s spectacular journey in her exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You created a huge blast when you won the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships and the gold medal at the 2016 European Championships. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

I started Track and Field back in year 2000 when I was 8 years old. Distance running has always been my favorite part, but I tried almost every event of track and field at the age of 8 till 15. With my 16th birthday I moved to Frankfurt, visited a boarding school and started the work with my current coach. During the past 9 years he taught me what it means to be a professional athlete and helped me to get the best version of myself. Since moving to Frankfurt I totally focused on running and the steeplechase. After graduating from high school (2011) I decided to take a year off from school and focused on qualifying for the Olympic Games in London. That was my biggest dream so far and a huge step in my running career.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What inspired you to take up this sport?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

First I just love track and field and enjoyed doing the sport and spending time with my team. But during all these years my hobby turned to be my job. By moving to Frankfurt to visit a sport school I decided to give this sport more credit. I never stopped believing in myself and that hard work pays off.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in the life of an athlete, preparing for the World Championships.

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

I spent literally the whole pre-season abroad. We usually train in high altitude, which means that I have to train in different countries all over the world. In summer I usually train in Switzerland. My first session of the day is 7 am. I usually do a 30 minute jog and some stretching. My main session is at 10:30 where we do track sessions and workouts. In the afternoon around 5 pm I usually go for another run which is between 8 and 12 km. In between I eat 3 times a day (8am, 1:30pm, 7pm) and try to recover and have 3 physio treatments a week.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

That’s really hard to say in just a few words. One of my toughest sessions before the world championships in London have been 6 x 400m (61 – 62s with 4 minutes recovery).

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

I need a huge breakfast and at least two cups of coffee before my workouts. I eat lots of carbs and light food to feel prepared for my tough sessions. I eat very healthy in general and try to give my body good nutrition. It’s important to stay skinny and strong at the same time.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Training for professional sports requires you to be out in the extreme weather. How are you able to take care of your skin and hair?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

I often don’t put on make up when being in training camps. I usually just use a day cream with SPF. My hair often look like a mess because I have to deal with sweat, rain and sun. I try to use good haircare and tie them tight while working out. That helps a lot.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Having participated in multiple events like World Championships and European Championships, tell usabout one of the most memorable experience that you may have had at these events.

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

The best moment of my career was winning the bronze medal in Beijing. That medal was unexpected and I fought hard till the finish line. It was thrilling, hard and wonderful at the same time. That moment shows what the sport is about. Nobody expected me to win the medal but I did. In sport anything can happen.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding Steeplechase runners who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

I think after London I can say that I had to deal with a lot of of great but also very hard moments in sport. As I said anything can happen. Sometimes you win, you’re happy and you celebrate your efforts and victories but sometimes it doesn’t work out like you wish or plan. But getting over it and dealing with disappointment can be a win as well.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after creating a new championship record time of 9:38.91 min at the 2013 European Athletics U23 Championships?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

Honestly 2013 was a very tough year form me. I was so nervous. I deeply wanted to win and was happy that it worked out. The time was good but not the aspect I focused on.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your preparations for the future Games and Championships.

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

Usually I go step by step. Next year the European Championships will be held in Berlin (Germany). That’s a pretty big deal. The year after we have world championships again. Followed by the Olympic games in Tokyo. I want to stay healthy, train hard, improve and win medals in major championships. But It’s a long way so I usually think from year to year.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for our visitors?

Ms. Gesa Felicitas Krause:

“Don’t give up because of what someone said. Use that as motivation to push harder.”

I think women are often underestimated. That’s a huge mistake 😉
