“The New Forty” Fitness Trainer Gina Ostarly Reveals Her Fitness Secrets!

gina ostarly

The New Forty is about being the most authentic, best YOU possible. It’s an attitude, it’s a state of mind, and it’s about respecting your age…and loving it. NOW is the time to make positive changes and have a blast doing so! So meet Gina Ostarly, “The New Forty”.

Gina Ostarly, The New Forty walks us through her incredible professional journey in an exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. You are a National Level Fitness & Figure Competitor and a Fitness Trainer. You reached the pinnacle of success by starting the revolution “The New Forty” which inspires so many women at and above 40. Tell us about this spectacular fitness journey and how it all began?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

For three decades, my career has promoted health, fitness, and a commitment to lead others to fulfilling lifestyles.

In my 30s, as a young mother of three, my mission was to dispel society’s myth of never getting back that 20 year old, pre-baby body. I spent a decade as living testament and debunking that this was indeed a myth, inspiring and leading others along the way. When I turned 40, I branded myself “THE NEW FORTY”, encouraging others like me to realize that now is the time to live life to the fullest. Life is not, as previously thought, over the hill at 40. This mission fostered living a life of authenticity, thus creating a positive and contagious attitude in respecting one’s own age, embracing it, loving it, and sharing it. We should be proud to share who we are, including our age! At 48 years old, I want to prove the idea that anything is possible. I want to represent the possibilities. I want to be THE reason you NEVER stopped believing in yourself.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are a Personal Trainer, Writer, National Level Fitness & Figure Competitor, and a Fitness & Swimsuit Model. How do you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

How do any of us manage a multi dimensional lifestyle? Very carefully (with a chuckle). In general, life can be busy and often overwhelming for a lot of us. I mindfully plan out my days to include all the things that keep me balanced. Balance is something I love coaching others on and requires constant effort. It must be created, not found. By putting forth the effort, I am able to live a multi dimensional lifestyle that includes all the things I love most.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

My fitness regimes have changed, come full circle, and evolved over the years. Change is important for not just your body, but your mind as well. In more recent years my focus has been on the efficiency of my workouts. Time is so valuable. When I workout, I want it to be time well spent. I accomplish this by training multiple body parts, super setting, circuit training, etc. This style of training, efficiently, is very appealing to my clientele as well.

I have also become more sensitive to what happens as we age and how to counter it with specific exercise elements. I have been training others for almost 20 years. Over that time I have watched the fitness industry evolve. The foundation of fitness has never been more functional. The addition of more balance, agility and even cognitive training is also a large part of my routines. The demographics of individuals who exercise continues to expand. I have a handful of clients over the age of 70 at any given time! And thankful to be able to make their quality of life better!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

My “special” diet isn’t t really that special. Its the “The 80/20 Plan” You might ask. “What is that?” The 80/20 plan is how I realistically maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most of the time, 80%, I eat what would be defined as really healthy. I keep processed foods to a minimum. I balance my meals throughout the day to include lean proteins, low glycemic
carbohydrates, healthy fats, a ton of vegetables and fruit. And then sometimes (20%), I indulge. First, lets not confuse indulgence with a lack of moderation. I indulge, in moderation, in foods I would not include in my everyday nutrition. Pizza is a weakness and so are Krispy Kreme donuts, but sometimes I want them and 20% of the time I have them. If you can’t figure out a way to still enjoy the things you love, whats the point?

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

Typically, the appearance of skin and hair is a byproduct of whats going on “in your body”. I drink lots of water to stay hydrated, Doing so keeps my skin looking full and supple. Your skin will be one of the first things to show a lack of proper hydration. Is your skin feeling dry and looking dull, try hydrating! I have even noticed my face looks tired and drawn if I am not hydrated properly.

Making healthy choices nutritionally, also plays a huge part in skin’s appearance. Ever fall off the wagon, start physically not feeling great and then have a skin breakout in addition? Its not a coincidence that when you consume processed foods, fried foods, sugary foods, your skin does not look or feel as healthy. The outside really is a product
of the inside. Another motivating reason to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Enjoy the sun, but be sensible about exposure time. Your body produces vitamin D naturally when it is directly exposed to sunlight and Vitamin D is a key ingredient to great looking skin. In recent years, we have become more cautious to sun exposure. Its lead to year around, 24/7, sunscreen or avoidance altogether. A little sun is good! And,
not just for your skin, but for other conditions like depression, bone health, immune function, etc.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding fitness trainers and competitors who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of fitness modeling and competitions?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

I love mentoring others in the fields of fitness training and competition training. In the field of personal training, I would say the most important skill set to develop is true genuineness. Coaching and educating others to adapt a healthier lifestyle is multi-faceted. You need to possess a real genuineness in wanting to know about your clients
wants, needs, goals, struggles, etc. Each client is unique. Some will succeed with simple strategies and be self motivated, while others will need more hand holding. Be ready to be versatile in delivering either and do it with ….genuineness.

In the field of competition, I encourage athletes to be ready to give a 110%. Its a very subjective sport, and one that I love. In my 20 years of competing and training others, I discovered the most important thing is to show up YOUR best. That is really the only thing we have full control of. Who else shows up, how the judges place you…..its all out
of our control.

Training hard and being fully committed results in you being your best on that particular show day. Whatever happens after that is “icing on the cake” One of my clients said the most amazing thing to me after one of her shows after I asked her how she was feeling about the outcome. She responded, “I wear my trophy everyday. So, I am good!”

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Suggest Five Fitness Tips for women who go through hormonal changes while aging and may face problems like muscle loss?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

1. Consistency.
Its my secret weapon in achieving and maintaining personal goals. Be consistent in your workouts, nutrition, sleep, etc. The consistency of doing something is what adds up and translates into results.

2. Stress.
The lack of it! Keep levels low. Stress can result in higher cortisol levels, reduced insulin levels and shut off fat burning hormones.

3. Exercise.
Do regularly to keep body fat percentages low. Lower body fat percentages promote balance in the hormone department.

4. Food.
Be mindful of selections. Choose foods that help balance hormones naturally. Avocados, quinoa, almonds and salmon will proactively balance your hormones.

5. Sleep.
Lack of sleep or disturbing your natural circadian rhythm can be one of the worst habits contributing to a hormonal imbalances. Aim for 7-8 hours nightly to reap the benefits. Hormones actually work on a schedule.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of fitness?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

I have been influenced and motivated by so many people since entering the field of fitness. Some are icons in the industry, and some are not. I have been in the fitness and health industry for almost 2 decades. Nailing down just
one influential; role model would be tough for me. Actually, impossible. As I get older (and better), my appreciation grows for Rachel McLish. She is an icon and an ultimate example of timeless beauty for women. Rachel exemplifies we CAN be strong and sexy at any age!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about the revolution that you’ve started “The New Forty”?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

When I turned 40, I branded myself “THE NEW FORTY” to encourage others like me to realize that now is the time to live life to the fullest. Life is not, as previously thought, over the hill at 40. My love of living a healthy lifestyle has filtered into personal training, writing for health publications, nutritional guidance, fitness modeling, fitness
competitions, athletic coaching, and motivational speaking. My philosophy is based on establishing accountability, maintaining a healthy balance to commitment, and developing the self desire for improvement. There are no excuses. As a mother of three and grandmother of one, I know that if I can do it, so can you.

The New Forty is about being the best you can be, consistently. It’s about creating balance in your everyday routine, so that you have time to enjoy the things you love the most. Learn to respect your age and love it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have done many photo shoots and shown your spectacular chiseled physique. What advice do you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such fitness modeling?

Ms. Gina Ostarly:

I treat photo shoots like a job and approach them with the same professionalism. Any kind of modeling is hard work. This was not something I had the luxury of knowing beforehand. An unexperienced model may think its all about showing up “fit”. Its so much more! Its physically demanding, and takes a lot of practice. It took me years to figure out what worked for me and against me. Rarely, does a model take 100 perfect pictures. On the contrary, you end up taking 100 pictures to get “THE SHOT”

* Practice your poses, you will feel more polished and confident the more you practice.

* Collaborate with your photographer. Getting to know them will ease the awkward first meeting. Photographers also love creative models. Its shows your enthusiasm to shoot with them and your professionalism.

* Show up ready. If your photographer is expecting a “fit” model, show up that way. Take pride in your appearance and wardrobe. Look the part, feel the part = confidence.

* Have fun! This is MOST important.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have a huge following on your social media accounts, especially Facebook. How does it feel that you are able to influence the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?

I feel blessed I can influence so many individuals to adapt and live a healthier lifestyle on a daily basis. Social media platforms allow me to reach a huge and diverse audience. Knowing I can inspire others to strive for their best version through health and fitness motivates me to do the same for myself! So, I thank those followers!
