Grace Elizabeth “Gracie” Gold is an American figure skater who competes in ladies’ singles. She is the 2012 World Junior silver medalist and a two-time U.S. national champion (2014 and 2016). At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Gold received a bronze medal in the team event and placed fourth in the ladies’ single skating competition. Her highest place at a World Championship is fourth, achieved consecutively in 2015 and 2016.

2014 Olympic Bronze Medalist Gracie Gold shares her spectacular journey towards living her Olympic Dream and being a U.S. Champion, in this exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You started doing skating at a very young age and won a silver medal at the 2012 World Junior Championship. You reached the pinnacle of success by becoming a two-time U.S. national champion – 2014 and 2016. Walk us through this spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

I started skating when I was 8 years old. I went to my friend’s birthday party at the local ice rink in Springfield, MO. After opening presents and eating cake we hopped on the ice for a public skating session. It was my first time skating and I was in love! I signed up for learn-to-skate lessons that day and the rest is history 🙂

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life.

Ms. Gracie Gold:

Okay! My day starts at 7:30am when I get up and get my day started. I grab a coffee and make my oatmeal and sit down at my laptop and answer some emails, check my phone, etc. I usually get to the rink around 9:15am so I have time to warm up before my first session. Right now I’m on the ice for 3-4 hours. I have a lesson with each of my coaches, Oleg and Marina. I have ballet 3x a week and off ice training 3x a week. I also work in some low intensity cardio training on the weekends when I am not training on the ice. I try to get to sleep before 10pm so I can be well rested for the next day.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

My favorite off-ice cardio right now is the bike, it’s low impact and is gentle on my joints. Bike sprints are a great way to get your heart rate up and break a serious sweat! My favorite leg exercise are box jumps or anything plyometric.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

Yes. I think if you want to feel great and healthy then you have to eat healthily. I also take vitamin D supplements daily and a multivitamin for women. I try to drink water through out the day and limit my caffeine intake to the morning so it doesn’t interfere with my sleep. I love eating fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins like white fish and chicken.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

At such a young age, you are out and making history. How are you able to balance your personal life and competing for figure skating?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

It can be difficult. I’ve had to make many sacrifices to be where I am today. You can’t have everything you want in life, but I think balance is important and sometimes overlooked. I try to relax on the weekends and get outside. I’m focused on skating Monday-Friday 24/7, so I try to unwind during those 48 hours. That being said, it’s important to keep your goals in mind and stay active, be healthy, and keep your eye on the prize.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding figure skaters who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

I think when skaters are really young it’s a great time to fall in love with skating. I think it’s important to skate as often as possible and try as many things as they can. They shouldn’t get hung up on how fast they are getting their triples or anything that stressful. It’s an opportunity to find what their passion in skating and to cultivate it. There are so many factions of figure skating, and the Olympic Games highlights just a small one. It’s an incredible sport and just because someone’s path doesn’t lead towards the Olympics, doesn’t mean that they should hang up their skates. It might simply mean that their skating dream is in a different, but equally amazing, direction.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

It was simply the most incredible experience of my life.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career in figure skating?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

I try to take inspiration and motivation from many different people in skating. I think each Olympic champion and World champion has different strengths and weaknesses. I can learn something different from each of them.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

When not doing figure skating, what other sports or hobbies do you have that you relish?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

When I’m not skating, I love staying active and doing fun things. I’ve recently moved to Detroit, so on the weekends I love hanging out with my friends and exploring my new city 🙂 I also love shopping, working out, reading, and watching Netflix.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

When playing professional sports, athletes often face injuries and other difficulties, would you like to tell the audience about how to cope up and make a comeback after an injury?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

Coming back from injury or other difficulties is more mentally difficult than physically. That’s the hardest part to overcome. Often the athlete loses faith in themselves and their ability to perform. I often rely on the people around me. That’s why it’s so important to have a strong support system around you. So when times get tough, you have people who love, support you, and believe in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With an audience of over 309k followers on your Instagram account @graciegold95 you’re a social media sensation and an internet leading star. How does it feel that you are able to influence and inspire the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?

Ms. Gracie Gold:

I was amazed during the Olympics how many people began following my Instagram! It really pushes me to be the best version of myself because I know how many people look to me for inspiration. It makes me a better person.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
