Jade Louise Ewen: English Singer, Songwriter and Actress Reveals her Workout and Beauty Secrets

Jade Louise Ewen is an English singer, songwriter, actress and a former member of the band, Sugababes. Ewen began her singing career in a girl group named Trinity Stone. In 2009, after winning the right, she represented the United Kingdom in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, performing the Andrew Lloyd Webber penned “It’s My Time”. She finished in fifth place, making her the most successful British Eurovision act since 2002.

Ewen replaced Keisha Buchanan in the group Sugababes in September 2009. Since joining, the group has achieved two UK top-ten singles, and one album, Sweet 7. Ewen was born and brought up in Plaistow, London, to a Jamaican mother, Carol, and a Scottish-Sicilian father, Trevor. She attended Brampton Manor Academy, before transferring to the Sylvia Young Theatre School (SYTS) after receiving a scholarship. While a student at SYTS, she appeared in the television productions The Bill, Casualty and Mr. Harvey Lights a Candle. At the age of twelve, Ewen auditioned for and won the part of Nala in The Lion King at the West End Theatre.

Ewen appeared in the children’s dance DVD, How To Dance. She was briefly featured in the video for Busted’s “What I Go to School For”. From 2003 to 2004 she appeared in the Australian series Out There. In 2005, Ewen became a member of the girl group Trinity Stone, which signed with Sony BMG. She later recorded with rapper Kwamé, who was impressed with her work on MySpace. She released a digital single, “Got You”, in 2008 under Kwame’s Make Noise label. Ewen co-wrote the song “A Little Bit” for the girl group Booty Luv, as well as the song “Let Me Be Me” for Jessica Mauboy. In early 2009, Ewen acted in the first episode of the series, Myths.

In January 2009, Ewen was approached and participated in the process to select the UK representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. She was selected to represent the UK with her performance of the song “It’s My Time”, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who accompanied her on piano. Ewen finished in fifth place at Eurovision, the highest placing for the UK since 2002. Having already signed with Polydor Records before the Eurovision selection, Ewen began working on her debut album

In September 2009, Ewen joined the group Sugababes, as the replacement for Keisha Buchanan. While her single, “My Man”, had been released the week she joined the band, it debuted at number 35 on the UK Singles Chart.

Ewen had not met the members of the Sugababes until two days before the video shoot for their single “About a Girl” in Los Angeles, having been flown there without being notified that she would be replacing Buchanan. “About a Girl” debuted at number eight in the UK. Sweet 7 was released in early 2010 and charted at number 14 on the UK Albums Chart. The second single to feature Ewen’s vocals, “Wear My Kiss”, peaked at number 7 in the UK.

The Sugababes began recording an eighth studio album in April 2010. In late 2010, Ewen became the face of Miss Ultimo lingerie. A promotional single under the new label, “Freedom”, was released for free on 25 September 2011. In November 2011, Ewen flew to Australia to appear on I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here Now! In the summer of 2014, Ewen played the supporting role of Clara in the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Porgy and Bess.

Jade Louise Ewen is an English singer, songwriter, actress and a former member of the band, Sugababes. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You started as a singer and doing acting at a very young age. You attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School (SYTS) and while a student at SYTS, appeared in the television productions The Bill, Casualty and Mr. Harvey Lights a Candle. At the age of twelve, you auditioned for and won the part of Nala in The Lion King at the West End Theatre. You reached the pinnacle of success when you joined the group ‘Sugababes’ in September 2009. Since joining, the group had achieved two UK top-ten singles, and one album, Sweet 7. Tell us about your journey that took you to where you are now in the world of singing and acting?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Yes, I started singing at a very young age. In fact both of my parents are visually impaired, which meant the focus in the house was of course music!

Music was a huge part of my life growing up and I attended dance, singing and acting classes local to my family home from the age of 3. I was very fortunate to go on to win a scholarship at the age of 11 to Sylvia Young Theatre School where I trained for 5 years, until I was 16.

It was then that I was fortunate enough to be offered another scholarship to Lain Theatre Arts, however I was also offered my first record deal. So, I made the decision to follow my love and passion of music that was where my journey pursuing a music career started! I actually had 2 unsuccessful record deals before I did Eurovision! I mean after Eurovision, the rest, as they say, is history…

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have selected a profession of being a singer and as an actress in television that requires a lot of hard labor, technical soundness and excellence in different faculties to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: I was always encouraged to pursue my dreams and if I’m honest it really has a lot to do with my support system around me in terms of what I’ve achieved and what I strive to achieve. Success is about so much more than just the talent. You need to be resilient and bounce back from rejection, you need focus and determination, and lots and lots of luck! You should also try and be a good person no matter what. Things change constantly in the entertainment world and the one thing everyone remembers is how you treated everyone when you had everything. If you’re nice people will be the first to help when you have nothing. I strongly believe that Karma, well it can be a bitch. Ha ha.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You represented the United Kingdom in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, performing the Andrew Lloyd Webber penned “It’s My Time”. Where you finished in fifth place, making you the most successful British Eurovision act since 2002. Tell us about this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Gosh, to be truthful it was ridiculously highly pressured but one of my most fun and amazing experiences to date. I mean 122 million people watched live, and I had to perform totally live, there was nothing to hide behind, and it was my first time ever doing something like that. That song too, HUGE! It was a moment that changed my life completely and I will be forever grateful.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Believe it or not I love to squat ha ha! I am not a naturally curvy woman, I have always been petite with an extremely high metabolism. Squatting along with other heavy weight low rep exercises help me build the curves I want. I will do leg workouts once a week, usually Mondays. Then biceps, back and shoulders on Wednesdays and then focus on my abs on Fridays. I really love Bikram Yoga when I get the chance to do it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Currently I am not on a special diet, and I’m not sure how much I believe in ‘diets’ as such. I pretty much eat what I want but I don’t tend to eat too badly anyway, it’s more about portion control and focusing on what’s GOOD for you. My diet is pretty high in protein so lots of fish and chicken, with vegetables and complex carbs.

There’s nothing wrong with having a treat, but I try to make sure a treat is just that!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: I LOVE Noveau Skin Therapy, they do an amazing facial called The Lunchtime with A-Lift which I have in London. I swear I leave looking like a new person! I also take a whole food supplement called Juice Plus: http://www.supermodelsecret.co.uk which makes your hair skin and nails grow longer and thicker as well as boosts your immune system and claims to help protect against cancer as it is full of antioxidants. I swear by it.

 Jade Louise Ewen on WomenFitness:

I think it’s fab! I really do. It’s aimed at ALL women and that to me is a huge YES.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words for the inspiring and budding singers and actresses who all are your fans, what should they do for their climb to the ladder of success in field of singing and acting?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Gosh that’s a hard one. I think just perfect your craft and be prepared for the unexpected. I work very hard in ensuring I am always ready for whatever challenge is thrown at me and I never stop training. It’s not too different to being an athlete, you need to make sure you’re at the top of your game and delivering the best you possibly can. You also need to prepare yourself for rejection as this comes more than success. If you can then get a great support network around you. Be nice to everyone and most importantly – listen. Oh, and never be late!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Your acted in the role of Aggie Thackery in the Australian series “Out There” from 2003 to 2004. Tell us about this experience of yours?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Wow, okay so when I was offered the series ‘Out There’ I was only 14 and it was the first time I had EVER been on a plane, and this was one that went all the way to Australia ha ha! It was amazing and I lived there for 4 months, what an experience.

The following year I was asked to come back to make a second series and this time my whole family came with me! We had Christmas there and enjoyed the beautiful beaches of Sydney. It was the first time I was able to share the rewards of my work with my loved ones, and I was basically just a kid still. The whole experience was unbelievable. Even thinking about it now gives me butterflies.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your inspiration and motivation that led you to your success in the world of singing?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: There are so many! I am influenced vocally by a lot of people: Whitney Houston, Tina Turner and Celine Dione mainly. These guys are the real deal! I also love Prince (I got to see him live recently in London – WOW WOW WOW!), and Queen and Stevie Wonder.

Generally speaking I am inspired by all round-performers and entertainers and those have a close connection to theatre so I have always loved the idea of putting on a real show! You only need to see Beyonce or Pink to see the kind of shows they put on… it’s so inspiring.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: In 2014 you played the supporting role of Clara in the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Porgy and Bess.Tell us about this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Well, this project was a wonderful opportunity and one of which I am so grateful. The story of Porgy and Bess is world famous, but to then hear it was at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre with Timothy Sheader directing, I was SO excited when my agent called saying they wanted to meet me for it. I actually self-taped originally as I was away working on another production and couldn’t make it to London. I then went back in a few times and they really worked me in the audition room, I felt this huge sense of determination to prove myself and hey, it paid off and they offered me the job. I had the best time on this show, everybody was a real joy to work with and I learnt so much from all involved. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer team of people! I won’t lie, I cried on the last show. We only worked together a short amount of time but I made friends for life on that show.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are a leading singer, songwriter, actress in television, theater artist and model. How you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: Honestly, I hate to be bored and I am always looking for new projects. I really enjoy being busy and experiencing new things. It doesn’t feel like work to me. I am very lucky in that respect.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Jade Louise Ewen: I think it’s fab! I really do. It’s aimed at ALL women and that to me is a huge YES.

Women Fitness Team thanks Jade Louise Ewen for giving her valuable time for this interview and quenching the thirst of her fans to know more about her and also wish to thank David Lazenby from Vivienneclore, The Richard Stone Partnership who made this interview happen.
