Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up Jaelin Kauf is an Exceptionally Talented Silver Medalist World Championship Freestyle Skier here she talks about her fitness routine, her diet, skin care, hair care and her success story.

Namita Nayyar:

You were born at Vail, Colorado and grew up at Alta, Teton County, Wyoming, US. Both your father and mother were mogul skiers. Your love for moguls skiing must have started early in life. You trained at Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and Teton Valley Ski Education Foundation. Tell us more about your journey of exceptional hard work, tenacity, and endurance?

Jaelin Kauf:

I was born in Vail Colorado and my family moved to Teton Valley Wyoming right after I turned 3. I was raised in Teton Valley and grew up skiing Grand Targhee Resort. Since I remember, our lives have revolved around skiing. Our family was almost always one of the first cars to the ski hill and one of the last to leave. When we skied, we skied bell to bell. I was raised on the slopes and raised with a deep love for being in the mountains and especially on snow. My brother Skyler and I both were a part of the Teton Valley Ski Education Foundation growing up, which meant we participated in every discipline; we raced, skied big mountain, trained ski cross, moguls and cross country. It was always just about getting out on the hill, and never really mattered what we were doing.

Eventually both my brother and I started to get more serious about skiing and wanted to pursue mogul skiing more competitively. Unfortunately, our school’s absentee policy was not going to allow us the time needed to travel to compete at the next level. So, in 2010, just before I was starting high school, my mom, stepdad, bother and I moved to Steamboat Springs Colorado. Their public high school had a ‘skier’s schedule’ and worked very well with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club to accommodate our schedules.

Through my experience with Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) and living in Steamboat Springs, I realized that my Olympic dream could very well be a reality. It was there that I really learned how to work hard and what it was going to take to make my skiing dreams a reality. I had such an amazing group of coaches and supporters at SSWSC that really pushed me and made me the athlete that I am, and I would not be where I am without them. In 2014 after graduating from High school, I decided to take a year off before going to college to put everything I had into that dream of making the U.S. Ski Team. It took two years, but in 2016 I was competing on World Cup, had a World Cup Podium under my belt and was on the U.S. Ski Team.

Namita Nayyar:

Tell us how you were drawn to this sport of moguls skiing and your meteoric rise to be a member of the US National Skiing team?

Jaelin Kauf:

I chased my brother into the sport as a young kid- he loved it and I wanted to do everything my big brother did. But over the years I tried about every other ski sport that was available to me and I was drawn to mogul skiing more than any other. What I really love about mogul skiing is the combination of all aspects of skiing into one perfected run. I think it is really so rare and different from the other disciplines in the way that it combines speed, technique and air, all into one run and you have to do all those 3 things almost flawlessly. It’s constant work to try and perfect that run as well as keep improving and pushing you while doing so.

Namita Nayyar:

You competed at FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships 2017 in Sierra Nevada, Spain, where you won a bronze medal in dual moguls. Tell us more about your experience of this achievement in the world of Skiing?

Jaelin Kauf:

This was my very first World Championships and I really struggled in the singles event of the competition and didn’t even make finals. I had overthought things a lot and never really felt confident enough to ski like myself. So, on duals day, that was the goal- to go out and ski my run as many times as I could. It felt good at the end of the day to have been able to put down so many consistent runs and end up on the podium. It was such a great way to end the season and got me very excited moving forward into the Olympic season.

Namita Nayyar:

You won a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in dual moguls, what has been a catalyst to these exceptional achievements in your professional career?

Jaelin Kauf:

My family was a big part of that. Deer Valley is such a fun event every year; it’s the best course and crowd that we see on World Cup tour and it’s the one event where my friends and family are at the bottom. Cheering me on. They are such an amazing support crew and such a big part of what I am doing, and I think that them being there and truly believing in me was the biggest thing for me at that event.

Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share?

Jaelin Kauf:

I start every training day and workout with a core and shoulder exercise. I have found that starting off the day by activating my core and some of my weaknesses are the best way to activate them and make sure my body is working properly for my training and workouts. For my core workout I do a TABATA of 30 seconds on, 10 seconds off 9 times, rotating through various core exercises. For my shoulder exercise, I do ten reps of 6 different motions for 3 rounds.

Namita Nayyar:

What is your fitness routine in such pandemic times?

Jaelin Kauf:

Starting off the pandemic was just trying to figure out how to make exercises work at home, just like many other people were. I did a lot of band and TRX workouts and loaded up my backpack with rocks for added weight. I Kept up the same workout routine with 3 strength workouts a week, just had to get a little creative with them.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you take a special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Jaelin Kauf:

I’d say I eat relatively healthy. I have my own garden at home, so during the summer everything I am cooking at home is very fresh and healthy! I don’t cut anything out of my diet or restrict myself from eating anything to remain healthy, but I think it is important to always eat in moderation.

Namita Nayyar:

Four foods you absolutely love.

Jaelin Kauf:

Ice Cream
Seafood
Chocolate

My mom’s baking

Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your haircare and skincare routine. What special care do you take for both during extreme winter weather?

Jaelin Kauf:

I use shampoo and conditioner bars for my hair and keep it tucked in my jacket or back in a bun to keep the ends healthy and protected from weather. I start and end the day with moisturizer. I make sure to always use moisturizer with SPF in it for added protection and make sure to use and reapply sunscreen when I am skiing. I think eating healthy, exercising and being happy play a large role in my appearance.

Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your personal struggles with any physical sports and Skiing injuries and what you may wish to share with other individuals who may feel motivated by your experience to win over physical sports injuries in their career?

Jaelin Kauf:

This year I had my first serious injury. I crashed skiing into a tree and fractured my transverse processes in my lower back. It happened just 4 weeks before our next competition and I really couldn’t imagine having to miss a competition. I was extremely lucky with the injury and that it wasn’t much worse and was able to start PT a week in. I was able to get back on snow for a few weeks in and felt good enough at 4 weeks to compete.

Of course, at this point, I had not skied a mogul course or train or jumped in a while and was much unprepared going into the competition. I was able to ski, but I was not mentally ready to be in the stat gate again, especially as I was thinking about reinjuring or making my back worse… It was a big learning experience for me to not rush things and to be okay with taking time off to heal and recover both physically and mentally.

Namita Nayyar:

Five athletic leisure brands you love to wear.

Jaelin Kauf:

New Balance
Lululemon
Wild Rye

Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding professional mogul skiers who all are your fans and shall like to know from you for their climb to the ladder of success in the field of moguls skiing?

Jaelin Kauf:

Have fun and don’t be afraid to fail and make mistakes. You have to push yourself and make those mistakes to learn and get better as a person and an athlete. There is always something to take away from those experiences. And have fun because that is all that really matters.

Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and the message for its visitors?

Jaelin Kauf:

I am really stoked to be featured in Women Fitness alongside so many other incredible women. It’s something that is really cool to be a part of. One of the things I love most about being involved in women sports is the comradely between other athletes and the opportunity to empower other women and young girls.
