Kate Partridge: Beautiful Sports Journalist Reveals her Workout, Diet and Beauty Secrets

Kate is a freelance journalist and sports broadcaster who spent four-and-a-half years at English-speaking news channel RT in Moscow, where she presented, edited and reported on the weekly SpoRT Show.

She started out by working on the sports desk at the Daily Mail in London before moving to Granada Television. She was an assistant producer for ITV during the 2002 World Cup and on The Premiership, before moving to Chelsea TV to become a presenter. She then went to Cardiff University to gain a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism.

After graduating, Kate joined IMG and worked in various roles including assistant producer on the Premier League, French League and Mainsail programmes, presenter on the Total Rugby radio show, and multi-media news editor on the Essential Sports, French League and HSBC Golf websites, and has covered sporting events worldwide.

She then freelanced at Setanta Sports News as a journalist and news editor, along with sub-editing and picture editing at the Daily Mail Online sports desk before joining RT.

While in Moscow, she has been a daily sports news presenter, Ukraine-based football reporter for Euro 2012 and live broadcast host of Russia’s World Cup 2018 bid. Her freelance work also includes Sky Sports News Radio, FourFourTwo and Champions magazines, as well as totalfootball.com and tribalfootball.com websites and The Offside Rule podcast.

Kate was educated at the London School of Economics and King’s College London, and is also a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language. When not watching football, she spends her time blogging and researching, exercising, socialising and watching comedy. Outside of sport, her favourite working week was spent as a temporary script editor on a comedy history series with Rik Mayall.

And, according to one very loyal and generous friend, she can also dance reasonably well, hold fitness classes, make a mean range of pasta dishes and enthusiastically support West Bromwich Albion.

Kate Partridge is exceptionally talented, accomplished and stunningly beautiful sports journalist, broadcaster, editor, TV presenter, television programme producer, media strategist, presenter on radio shows and multi-media news editor. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have selected the profession of sports journalism that requires a lot of hard work, technical knowledge about different sports and excellence in different faculties to finally succeed – how do you achieve that?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I was originally set for an academic career, with a Masters degree in Ancient History and making Julius Caesar my professional focus! However, I grew up in a sport-loving family, and was always fascinated by the media and performing on stage. So I decided that if I wanted to work in broadcasting, I had to do it while I was still relatively young – and Caesar wasn’t going anywhere for now – so I decided to change careers. I went on a touch-typing course to give me a skill that would get me through the door, and went to work as a temp for Moet & Chandon before getting a job the Daily Mail, and it took off from there.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You started your sports journalism and broadcasting career working on the sports desk at the Daily Mail in London before moving to Granada Television. You later made the transition to the weekly ‘SpoRT Show’ on the RT news channel in Moscow. Your professional career has propelled you to the height where you have been leading the world of sports journalism and broadcasting. Tell us something about this fairy tale professional journey?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I wouldn’t describe it as a fairy tale, but it’s certainly an unusual story! I loved working at the Daily Mail but I wanted to make the move from newspapers to TV.

At that time, it wasn’t straightforward, so I took a job as an assistant to the head of broadband at ITV as I “knew about football websites”! As he rocketed up the company, he took me with him. Meanwhile, I was volunteering to do extra work in the evenings and at weekends at ITV Sport, first as a runner on the World Cup, Champions League and Premiership football programmes, and then as an assistant producer.

Eventually, I obtained only the second sabbatical ITV had then granted by transferring to Sport full time, before I was put forward to work as a presenter for Chelsea TV as a summer job. After that, I went to Cardiff University for nine months to study for a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism. When I qualified, I returned to London and went to work as a temp at IMG, then as a journalist in their online department, and then became news editor across the company’s online content. When IMG restructured, I freelanced at Setanta Sports News and the Daily Mail, and when Setanta ceased broadcasting, I applied to RT. They offered me a job a sports presenter on the spot – and two months later, I was in Moscow with my life in four bags!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are a leading female sports journalist and broadcaster, editor, TV presenter, television programme producer, media strategist, presenter on radio shows and multi-media news editor. How you are able to manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional, multi-faceted lifestyle?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I have never really thought my life was remarkable, but I suppose it is a bit different! Working in sport often means working anti-social hours, as that’s when most of the events take place. You have to be flexible and prepared to sacrifice a few social events, particularly at weekends. I have never really found this a problem because I love my job and sport is also my hobby, but it can take its toll on your personal life. You also have to be pretty organised to ensure you see your friends and loved ones, as well as keeping house, and trying to keep fit and healthy. It’s a constant juggling act!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you would like to share?

Ms. Kate Partridge: When I was little, my Dad made me memorise Rudyard Kipling’s “If,” and now I feel guilty if I don’t live by the line: “If you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run”! In other words, I multi-task. While I’m watching something on TV, I go on my exercise bike. Afterwards, I do anything from 100 to 500 sit-ups, and 100 press-ups. I also try to walk everywhere, and take the stairs or walk up and down escalators. It’s amazing how much quick, free cardiovascular exercise you can
find, if you want!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you follow some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I food combine as much as possible. In other words, I don’t mix proteins and starches, keep fruit separate, eat one “neutral” meal every day, and drink at least two litres of water daily. I don’t eat red meat or seafood, but I do eat some fish and chicken. I eat lots of fruit and tomatoes, as well as natural yoghurt. I drink alcohol around once or twice a week, and usually Prosecco or white wine, and I don’t smoke. I also take a multivitamin, Selenium and garlic tablets each day.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing, and secondly what you do to your hair to make it look so stunning?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I use Botanics All Bright Eye Soothing Eye Make-Up Remover and Johnson & Johnson’s Clean & Clear Cleanser on my skin at night. Otherwise, I wash my face in the shower with Clinique Liquid Facial Soap and a Clarisonic Mia sonic facial cleansing brush. Then I sometimes use Oil of Olay moisturizers, as well as Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I never go outside without wearing makeup or at least moisturiser. This helps to protect your skin against the environment as well as looking good!

I wash my hair every other day with a shampoo that removes product build-up, such as Pantene Ice Shine, and then I recommend Umberto Giannini’s Indulgent Beauty Moisture Mask as a conditioner. I also always use a serum such as John Frieda’s Frizz Ease. These products help to protect my hair against the effects of colour treatments, hair dryers, straighteners and curling tongs. After I’ve washed my hair and applied serum, and always at night, I put my hair into two loose plaits. This encourages the follicles to lie flat while you sleep, and helps you grow your hair and to prevent split ends.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you have any advice and motivational words for our aspiring and budding women sports journalists and broadcasters who all are your fans, what should they do to climb up the ladder of success in sports journalism?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I’m still climbing that ladder myself! But I would say that focus, determination, hard work and research are the keys to success. Also, I’d say to anyone to always believe in yourself, be professional and kind – and have fun! Be the best you that you can be.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You took a history degree at the London School of Economics and have a Masters in ancient history. Later, you also went to night school to learn Russian and passed the GCSE. You also went to Cardiff University to gain a postgraduate diploma in broadcast journalism. How has this background helped you in becoming one of the most accomplished female sportscasters in the world?

Ms. Kate Partridge: An academic background is a good basis for being a journalist. It helps with analysis, writing concisely and producing work to deadlines. It also provides a good general knowledge, breadth of vocabulary and the confidence to deal with difficult situations. Specialist skills like languages in a world where sportsmen and women are now globally renown are also very useful, and allow you unique access to people.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your inspiration and motivation that led you to your success in the world of sports journalism?

Ms. Kate Partridge: As a little girl, I was totally inspired by the ability, determination and stoicism of Nadia Comaneci and the gymnasts from the Soviet Union. My motivation also comes from my grandparents – my father’s mother and my mother’s father – who brought me up with good values, and to believe that I could do anything I wanted and be anything I wanted to be.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your experience of working for four-and-a-half years at English-speaking news channel RT in Moscow, where you presented, edited and reported on the weekly SpoRT Show?

Ms. Kate Partridge: Because of history, politics and economics, there are a lot of preconceived views about Russia and Russians. I can only speak from my own experience, as an English woman working as a sports presenter for an English-speaking TV channel in Moscow.

I loved it, as I was doing my dream job in a city and among a people I had been intrigued by ever since I was a child. Moscow is historically and culturally fascinating, with arguably the best nightlife in the world. I made some of the best and most loyal friends I have ever had, from all corners of the globe. I also felt that Moscow was a spiritual mirror: whatever you felt, the old city reflected back.

I loved the long hot summers by the Moscow river and in Gorky Park, and the cold but snowy, dry and windless winters, the endless supply of cheap taxis, the 20-hour a day beautiful and cheap metro, and 24-hour corner shops and supermarkets. RT also allowed me the opportunity to cover events and see parts of the world I might never otherwise have had the chance to see, such as large amounts of Ukraine during Euro 2012. No life experience is ever perfect, but I have rarely felt so much that I had come “home.”

Ms. Namita Nayyar: With exceptional hard work you are credited with all your achievements. Do you believe that the hand of Providence (Supreme Being) played a role in your success?

Ms. Kate Partridge: I am a born optimist. I believe that my destiny lies in my own hands, and that my own particular concept of god is with me, working for me and supporting me at all times. I also believe in karma: whatever you give out comes back to you.
