Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness talks to Katherine Castro about her spectacular journey into the acting world.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Your empowering journey from being a TV host and Actress to Producer has made you Hollywood’s next most lovable Latina. Walk us through your incredible journey so far. Introduce us to a day in your life.

Ms. Katherine Castro:

My day usually starts at 5:30am. I make my coffee with an Italian stove top espresso coffee pot and hit the gym. Later I go through my emails, both LA & DR emails, prep for any upcoming audition, and read some scripts. I constantly receive scripts to see If I am interested in being involved in a project. I work on my own projects too. SOMEDAY is in post-production and now I’m working on another project that addresses the subject of suicide, also inspired by true events. I also write, not scripts but concepts. Meditation is part of my daily life as well as stretching. When my mind is racing I pull out my mat, stretch, and finalize it with mediation. Another way to calm my mind and focus on the now is jumping on my trampoline. I recently started picking up my guitar again. I always keep myself busy and feed my creativity.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your highly anticipated new romantic-drama SOMEDAY opposite Chris Santos (“The Girlfriend Experience”) helmed by J.S Mayank.

Ms. Katherine Castro:

SOMEDAY is a beautiful film, inspired by true events, but told in a different way. It’s about two strangers, Adam & Melody, that meet on a 14 hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. Adam is a world famous composer but Melody doesn’t recognize her flight companion seated next to her. Along the way, they pour their hearts out, forging a connection that is beautiful because of its simple fleeting nature. The beauty of SOMEDAY is that it’s a story that everyone can relate to. Everyone has experienced meeting someone unexpectedly and having an instant connection that feels so familiar, it’s like they’ve known each other or met before. It really is a precious film!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Katherine Castro:

In the gym I like to do cardio. Whether the treadmill or the elliptical, I like to get my heart rate going and a good sweat. I also do Pilates with a private instructor to get a full body work out. I have a trampoline in my backyard on which I jump for about an hour a few times a week. I get to work on my flips. It’s also an intense cardio with low impact. In addition, it’s the most effective exercise to drain the lymphatic system, therefore detoxing your body. I also do yoga at home and stretch on a daily basis.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Katherine Castro:

I wouldn’t say it’s strict. I’m just very aware of what I feed my body, as I know it has a direct effect on my health. I am very much in touch with my body so when I don’t feel well, I know exactly what I ate that gave me a certain reaction. I do eat very healthy, clean and Organic. Lots of greens and vegetables because I love them! I don’t deprive myself from anything. The trick of it all is moderation, and to drink a lot of water.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your haircare and skincare routine.

Ms. Katherine Castro:

Hydration is key! I drink about a gallon of water a day. Skin care and hair start with what we put inside our bodies, but there are elements that we cannot control, such as our environment, which affect us. For this, I take antioxidants and vitamins, as well as liquid collagen and Hyaluronic Acid. I wash my face with a gentle cleanser and follow up with Vitamin C, Hyaluronic acid, a collagen booster moisturizer and finish up with sunscreen. In between, I get facials and treatments that help me keep my skin clear of impurities.

As for hair, being an actress that has to go through many changes, I visit my hairdresser for biweekly organic and deep conditioning hair treatments. For both skin and hair, I don’t stick to just one product or one brand. I change it up constantly, according to weather changes and to avoid a plateau effect.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have also spent 1 year at the NY Film Academy and have worked with premier acting coach Aaron Speiser (Will Smith, J-Lo) and singing coach Carol D’ Andrea (Broadway’s West Side Story). Tell us more about your experience working with them. Also, share with us one memorable moment that you had.

Ms. Katherine Castro:

Aaron Speiser has an understanding of human behavior like no other. He gets to the nitty, gritty—to the core of the character. It was always amazing to see him working with other actors and even with myself because the slightest adjustment just brought that much more truth to the scenes and the characters. It’s like magic. He truly is a master.

Working with Carole D’Andrea was such an honor. I was preparing to audition for Lin Manuel Miranda’s film version of “In The Heights”. At the time, it was going to be directed by Kenny Ortega. Kenny met me and knowing that I was Dominican, he wanted to bring me in to audition for a part. This lead me to Carole D’Andrea, for singing performing lessons. We had to prepare a song every week. She has a wonderful piano player that would accompany us while on stage. About 2 months into the class, I had prepared one of my favorite songs “Whatever Lola Wants” from the play “Damn Yankees”. My mother happened to be in town, so I brought her to class with me. I went on stage and performed, and it was not until after my performance that she informed me that she had directed “Damn Yankees.” I completely froze because I was unaware of this. She loved & praised my performance bringing both my mom and myself to tears.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

After your feature on NBC Latino’s Top 10 Standout Latinos at Sundance, you received the Hollywood F.A.M.E. award for ‘International Breakthrough Artist of the Year’ and an award from the Women in Film Association in the Dominican Republic. How does it feel when you are appreciated and awarded for the all the hard work that you put in?

Ms. Katherine Castro:

It always takes me by surprise when something like that happens. It is very humbling because I don’t consider myself special, but I do consider myself lucky to be doing what I love so much. My passion. I am grateful for the recognition and it propels me to continue working hard and give my all.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us your Top 5 Favorite Exercises.

Ms. Katherine Castro:
Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been associated actively with many charities and non-profit organizations like Artists for Peace and Justice, PETA, Step Up, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, Make a Film Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, that are dear to your heart, tell us how have you been able to achieve and quench your thirst of giving back to the society through this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Katherine Castro:

I think it’s my human duty to serve. This comes from my mother who was a political and Human activist in my country, so I grew seeing that we were supposed to help and be the voice of those in need. Now we have social media, which helps us reach a broader audience and have direct contact and impact. So not only through working directly with charities and non-profit organizations, I like to use my social media to raise awareness of issues that are close to my heart.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding actresses, who all are your followers and shall like to know from you for their climb to the ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Katherine Castro:

Don’t take no for an answer. Make things happen for yourself. Keep a positive attitude even in the darkest moments. Surround yourself with people that share your same dreams, vision, and passion. People that want to grow with you. People that believe in you and that you believe in, so that you can lift each other up. Never stop dreaming and putting in the work to manifest dreams into reality!
