Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Katie Corio, an exceptionally talented fitness trainer and social media influencer, who talks about her workout, diet and beauty secrets.

Namita Nayyar:

You are one of the most popular fitness trainers, what attracted you towards fitness and make it your career of choice?

Katie Corio:

Fitness has completely transformed my life–– from providing routine and structure to my days, to increasing my self-confidence and strength, to teaching me how to love and appreciate my body… living an active and healthy lifestyle has been fulfilling in ways I couldn’t have ever imagined. I consider it a privilege to be able to help others achieve the same life transformation as I had through fitness. I get to help people conquer their goals in the gym and then watch the confidence they build radiate through the other areas of their life. Helping people become the best versions of them, helping them become more confident and positive in the process, that’s what I live for. It’s the most fulfilling and rewarding job!

Namita Nayyar:

Provide us an insight into a day in your life? The first thought that strikes you about good health?

Katie Corio:

I’ve always believed that health is wealth. Your health is more valuable than anything in the world. Without it, you can’t do anything! I usually start my day with a morning meditation followed by a healthy breakfast. After a few hours on my laptop I head to the gym for my daily workout. Post workout I usually grab a healthy lunch and head up to the Corio Active warehouse to pack orders and work on new product development. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to squeeze in some beach volleyball in the late afternoon before heading home to make a healthy dinner and relax with my dogs and boyfriend before bed!

Namita Nayyar:

Five must-have foods that you recommend for a weight loss diet?

Katie Corio:

I’m a strong believer that consistency over time is what yields the best and most lasting results. I also teach my clients to eat whole, natural, nutritious foods. Foods found straight from nature, not man-made or processed. My top favorite healthy food staples I always incorporate in my diet are eggs, avocado, chia seeds, berries, walnuts and leafy greens.

Namita Nayyar:

What does your first meal of the day look like? Supplements you strongly advocate for women at 40?

Katie Corio:

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. A typical breakfast of mine would include eggs, sautéed spinach, fresh organic berries, and oatmeal topped with chia seeds, walnuts and honey. Paired with a large cup of coffee of course!

Supplements for women at 40… that’s an easy one! I highly recommend doing a power-packed greens drink in the morning. The one I use and love is called Vegan Greens & Reds, from 1Up Nutrition. It has tons of antioxidants, pro and prebiotics, micro greens, vitamins and minerals. It packs a punch and tastes awesome too. It’s great for immunity boost, anti-aging and cancer prevention. The other supplement I recommend is also from 1Up Nutrition–– called Women’s Hormone Support Plus. It’s full of hand-picked and tested ingredients that support a woman’s natural hormonal balance and regularity. Women go through so much change hormonally through all life’s stages, with some not so pleasant side effects. This all natural supplement aids in keeping the hormones well balanced and regulated, minimizing the negative side effects that we experience (like PMS, mood swings and fatigue).

Namita Nayyar:

Your mission is, “To positively influence the lives of others.” Why so and how far have you been successful in your mission worldwide?

Katie Corio:

Sometimes I wonder how much of an impact I’m actually making, as the digital space can feel so lonely at times. Human connection is now usually filtered through screens, texts and emojis. But it always seems like just when I need it the most, I run into someone who follows me or has done a program of mine, and they tell me how I’ve made a big positive impact in their lives. That usually refills my cup with purpose. Another big motivator for me to keep going is when I see a progress update of a client of mine, someone with an amazing transformation or a story of confidence and motivation. Then I am assured I AM having a positive impact.

Namita Nayyar:

Why is a good warm-up so important before a workout session? 5 everyday must-dosstretch.

Katie Corio:

A good warm-up is essential to prevent injury, promote blood flow and activate the muscles you’re going to work out. I usually stretch and foam roll after my workout, as my cool down. My 5 everyday stretches are:

  1. The pigeon hold stretch for the glutes and hips
  2. The child’s pose for the back and shoulders
  3. The ½ kneeling hamstring and psoas stretch for your hammies and hips
  4. Cat cow stretch for neck, back and abdomen
  5. . Sun salutations for the whole body

Namita Nayyar:

Before starting resistance training, what are the key points to keep in mind?

Katie Corio:

Key points to note are to take it slow and listen to your body. Let your body be your guide. Push your strength, but make sure to keep good form. I recommend hiring a local trainer to show you how to use the equipment in the gym if you’re a total beginner. That will give you the confidence you need to adjust to your gym and give you more variability for your training. I recommend starting with machines and cables, then moving up to the barbells and free weights. I also recommend having a workout program to follow; it will make it MUCH easier for you than randomly wandering around the gym without a plan!

Namita Nayyar:

Three common gym mistakes that beginners make?

Katie Corio:

  1. They go too hard, too fast. This leads to an overload of soreness and people are more apt to quit after experiencing that.
  2. They practice bad form. If you’re new to the gym, make SURE you ask someone how to do the exercises before you continue. There’s nothing worse than watching a newbie in the gym throw weight around with bad form!
  3. They give up too soon. Always remember, just when you want to give up, you’re probably on the verge of a breakthrough. Try to focus on CONSISTENCY rather than RESULTS. Make your goal be to become a healthier person, not to lose x amount of pounds. When you embrace your new identity as a fitness person, you’ll be more likely to make choices that align with what “fitness people” do.

Namita Nayyar:

Three components that isessential to becoming a fitness trainer?

Katie Corio:

  1. Make sure to get certified! You want to be as knowledgeable as possible when people trust you with caring for their personal health.
  2. Remember when you’re training people that they are there to better themselves and their health. That’s a serious job you’ve got. Take it seriously; get to know your clients. It will make both of your experiences better.
  3. Always keep learning. I’m always open to learn new methods of training and nutrition and different styles of training I can incorporate in my programs

Namita Nayyar:

You are aNASN Certified Expert-Level Personal Trainer and Licensed Sports Nutritionist, with a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology. You also compete in the Bikini Division of Women’s Bodybuilding and work as a fitness model! What motivated you to launch Corio Active?

Katie Corio:

I wanted to create a brand that could become a community that people feel like they belong to. Corio Active will be much more than another clothing brand. It will be a platform for sharing amazing women and their accomplishments and stories. We are committed to creating meaning behind every launch. We plan to have many Corio events, fundraisers for charity and tons of other special things up our sleeves (as soon as Covid dies down of course).

Namita Nayyar:

Your favorite active wear brands are?

Katie Corio:

Corio Active of course!!! The only active wear brand you need: P

Define the Women Fitness website for our viewers

Katie Corio:

A website made to help women be their best selves and achieve their health and fitness goals with ease.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you follow any skincare and hair care routine, after a hard workout?

Katie Corio:

Yes! I always wash my face after I work out. I use retinol to help promote exfoliation and prevent aging. And you know I always use sunscreen!

Namita Nayyar:

After a long hard-working day, what do you look forward to? 4 Stress-busting tips?

Katie Corio:

I look forward to relaxing with my boyfriend and our two fur babies, Sadie and Simba. They are my retreat from the stressful day, my escape. For stress-busting, I recommend meditation, yoga, stretching, and long deep breaths every hour. If you work in a sedentary job, get up and move your body every 30 mins or so!

Namita Nayyar:

Social media has grown big. State the best and worst part of it in your life?

Katie Corio:

Social media is such a double edged sword. On side, it’s allowed me to start a business, connect with hundreds of thousands of people, and make a huge global impact! It’s launched my career in ways that would have been near impossible otherwise. On the other hand, it can be draining and soul sucking at times. I miss real face to face human connection and I get sick of the screens.

Namita Nayyar:

Five things we’ll always find in your gym bag?

Katie Corio:

My Corio Lifestyle Tote gym bag, you mean? : P You’ll always find my 1Up Nutrition preworkout and Bcaa’s, my knee sleeves (for squatting), and my air pods for my favorite workout music!

Namita Nayyar:

Personal & professional goals for 2021?

Katie Corio:

I am very focused on my two businesses, Corio Active (active wear) and Corio Fit (online fitness and nutrition coaching). My goal is to continue working hard on growing the two brands. We currently have new active wear and loungewear launching every month in 2021 for Corio Active, and new programs launching for Corio Fit every quarter. I’m gearing up for one of the busiest but most satisfying years of my life! I am so incredibly excited and invite everyone reading this to stay tuned into it all. I’ve got something for everyone.
