Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us about your journey that took you to the top of the world of fitness modeling and of being a national bikini competitor?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  When I was 13 I started doing TaeBo home workouts with Billy Blanks on VHS tapes (yes I said VHS!) in my bedroom. Maybe it was the catchy infomercials, maybe I just had too much energy for my own good. What ever the reason I was drawn to it. This is the first experience of “working out” I can remember. Hey, everyone starts somewhere!

I had always loved the water, so when I started high school I tried out for the water polo team. My first exposure to weight training was for team strength training in the high school weight room. I definitely thrived in the gym and enjoyed strength training. When I turned 16 I got my first job at the local gym and started to get familiar with all the other aspects of the fitness industry.

Next thing you know 4 years had flown by and I had been in the pool and gym. After high school sports ended I had a huge hole that needed to be filled. I found a lock and key fit by teaching group fitness classes. I started teaching Spinning when I was 18 and never looked back. From there one thing led to another. Now I teach everything… when I say that I mean it… Pilates, Yoga, Boot Camp, Zumba, Step, Toning, Silver Sneakers etc etc etc.

To satisfy my competitive side, I began competing in triathlons, organized runs and of course bikini competitions. Photographers started to approach me at shows and through social media requesting to shoot me. The more good pictures I had the more photographers wanted to shoot and it just snowballed from there.

In 2014 I entered the Bodybuilding.com Bodyspace Spokesmodel search and was lucky enough to make the top 5 female finalist. This has given me opportunities to model and write for the Bodybuilding.com website and also gained me my wonderful sponsors, Athletic Edge Nutrition. It has been a wild ride and I’m loving every second of it!!!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have an exceptionally set of educational background having a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior. Certifications in Personal Training, Group Fitness and much more. How did your education lead you to your current career as a fitness professional.

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  Anyone who knows me can tell you  I’m unusually hyperactive. Fortunately I still did well in class and excelled in school. I graduated valedictorian and varsity athlete, heading into college with every intention of becoming a doctor.  While a student at UC Davis I worked as the Student Coordinator for the Fitness and Wellness Department of Campus Recreation. It was an incredibly fun experience and gave me the opportunity to lead the UC Davis Football, Basketball, Gymnastics, and Women’s Swim Team through pre-season conditioning. I also spent time training tri-athletes, instructing swim lessons, presenting workshops for student outreach, teaching diverse group fitness classes and training clients of all fitness levels, ages, and backgrounds.  In only three and a half short years I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior.

As the time to apply to medical school approached, even though I had the grades and test scores to be a strong candidate, I felt my heart pulling in another direction. My passion for fitness and wellness was too strong to ignore. For this reason I put my medical ambitions aside and decided to continue my work as a fitness professional. For over a decade I have been working in Fitness and Wellness both as a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Coach, Motivational & Educational Public Speaker, Presenter and Examiner for the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, and most recently the Northern California Instructor Coordinator for the SilverSneakers Fitness Program.

Even though I did not follow my original path into the medical field, my educational background has greatly improved my skills as a fitness professional and  has made it possible for me approach training as both as athlete and scientist. I find my job to be incredibly rewarding and feel great satisfaction in helping my clients live healthier lives.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Share your exercise routine that you do to maintain such a bikini perfect physique?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  My basic fitness routine is simple: be active everyday and have fun. I personally believe that working out should not be a chore, it should be something you look forward to. Part of keeping it fun is variety. By continuing to revise my workouts my mind never gets bored, and my body doesn’t plateau.

Group fitness is my first love. I have so much fun teaching and taking classes it doesn’t even seem like I’m working out. I’m fortunate to get the majority of my cardiovascular exercise while teaching classes. For strength training I lift weights 4 or 5 days a week, either at home or at the gym, varying my routine every few weeks to keep it fresh. Again, my routine is constantly changing, but to give you an idea, here is what I did last week:

Sunday: Walk/jog intervals outside with my dog for 1 hr

Monday: 5pm taught Spinning Class, 6pm Weight Training for my Shoulders, 7pm taught Vinyasa Yoga

Tuesday: 10am taught Bootcamp Class, 430pm Weight Training for my Chest and Triceps, 545pm Taught Spinning Class

Wednesday: 9am taught Spinning Class, 10am Weight Training for Legs and Core, 8pm Walked the dog 45 min

Thursday: 10am Weight Training for my Back and Biceps, 11am taught Power Yoga, 530pm taught Zumba

Friday: 730am taught Silver Sneakers Class, 845am taught Pilates Class, 10am taught Bootcamp Class.

Saturday: Did a total body resistance training circuit in my home gym with high intensity cardio intervals.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your diet? Do you take a particular fixed regulated diet comprising of nutrients and vitamins to keep you in perfect health?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  As a person who suffers with Celiac disease, I have no choice but to follow a gluten free diet. I have a lot of fun experimenting in the kitchen, creating delicious food that is nutritionally dense, low in calories and gluten free.

Other than that my diet is pretty simple. Every meal I eat protein with some type of carbohydrate or healthy fat. I eat frequently, balance my macronutrients, avoid refined sugar and stay away from highly processed foods. I also try drink at least a gallon of not a water a day.

I set my daily calorie allowance based on my activity that day and current goals. For example, if I’m teaching several classes one day I allow myself to eat a little more than days I am less active. If I am trying to lean out for a competition or photoshoot my calorie allowance is only about 300 calories lower than usually. I have learned from experience that if I restrict any more than that I get grumpy.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your motivation to take a multi-faceted personality of a fitness model, personal trainer, media personality, nutritional expert, national bikini competitor, public speaker, writer and an athlete?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  Being able to encourage and inspire others is more meaningful than I can even begin to describe. The information that is out there is confusing, and more often than not people with even the best intentions end up frustrated and discouraged because they are misinformed or misguided. Putting people on the proper path and giving them a strong foundation in fitness and wellness sets them up for a lifetime of success. I enjoy helping people understand their body and find different ways to challenge it safely and effectively.

I love to share my passion for fitness and wellness, and hope that in someway I am able to change the lives of all the people I come in touch with. It could be as simple as giving them a great recipe off my social media or as complex as completely redoing their workout routine. I want to be a resource people can trust for good advice and  inspiration. It is truly inspiring to witness the amazing goals my clients accomplish. I can not begin to express the joy I feel hearing that a client noticed something in their everyday life was easier, better, or less intimidating than before. Exercise can improve independence and quality of life, prevent or alleviate injury, correct postural deviations, improve self esteem and confidence, relieve anxiety…. the list is endless! I feel truly blessed to be able to help people overcome obstacles in their life and reach new heights.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  Healthy skin and hair start from within. Proper nutrition is the first and most important step. If you are lacking a healthy diet it will reflect in the way you look.

I keep my personal beauty regimen simple. Less is more. Over cleansing your face or hair can cause it to dry out, produce more oil and look greasy. Believe me, as a teenager I learned this the hard way! My daily routine is washing my face morning and night using a Clarisonic and a gentle cleanser, then applying moisturizer.

I constantly get asked what I do to make my hair so long, thick and healthy. The truth is I do NOTHING. Literally, I do nothing to it. I don’t color it,  don’t blow dry it, and I don’t curl it or straighten it more than 2 or 3 times a month. Each day I wash with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, then just let it do its thing.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have done bold photo shoots. What advice you wish to give to the women of today to be body confident in order to do such bold modeling?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt: To be very honest, there are a lot of things about my body I would like to change. I think every women on this planet feels that way. The secret to being confident is accepting the body that you have and learning to embrace the things that make you beautiful. There are so many different types of women: curvy, slender, muscular, tall, short, busty, and infinite others. Just because you admire a feature you see in someone else, doesn’t mean you should feel less beautiful in comparison. Focus on being the best version of you, and stop worrying about other people.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: The NPC Tahoe Show is the premier bodybuilding contest in California and Nevada. You stood 1st overall in 2012 NPC Tahoe Show. Tell us about this experience and how did you feel before and after the competition?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  When it comes to competing I have found that when you feel good, you look good. For this reason I stay far away from a lot of the drastic methods competitors often use to cut water in the final week. I keep my carbohydrates coming in as normal, eliminate the extra salt and bulky fiber, and if needed take a very gentle herbal diuretic. I went on stage feeling fantastic, having fun, enjoying the experience.

The Tahoe Show is such a supportive and encouraging environment to compete in. Chris Minnes, the promoter that created this fantastic event, goes above and beyond to ensure that the competitors are taken care of. From beginning to end the show is unique and entertaining. Of all the bikini competitions out there, I’m so happy it was the Tahoe Show that I took overall. Winning feels incredible, and seeing yourself on posters the following year is pretty freaking awesome to. But, the best thing that has come out of that show in particular is the friendships I made in the process.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Elaborate on your personalised concept of “Personal Training” that you offer?

Ms. Kendall Lou Schmidt:  I constantly strive to develop positive mindsets, confidence in self image and a health lifestyle. Each clients personalized program is created to achieve their unique goals. Every client is different. They all have their own motivations, wants and needs, personal strength and personal struggles, time limitations, bad habits and hurdles. What works for one person won’t always work for someone else. I believe personal training is exactly that, personal, so I approach each client as an individual and create something just for them.
