Kristy Sellars: Exceptionally Talented Australian Pole Dancer and Miss Pole Dance Victoria Reveals her Workout and Diet Secrets

With a solid dance background already up her sleeve, Kristy Sellars began pole dancing in 2007 and was instantly hooked. In 2009, she opened PhysiPole Studios in Ballarat. 2009 was also the year Kristy competed at her first professional competition, Miss Pole Dance Victoria. She competed again in 2010, this time placing second runner up and receiving a wild card entry to Miss Pole Dance Australia where she performed her Pirates of the Caribbean piece.

After taking a year off performing to have a baby, Kristy made her comeback performing a piece at Encore Sydney Pole Show where she played a deranged mental asylum patient. Shortly after, she stunned the pole world with her now famous “Flight Attendant” routine and took out the 2012/13 title of Miss Pole Dance Victoria. Since then, Kristy has travelled to the USA to perform at Girl Next Door and International Pole Convention, competed in Pole Art in Helsinki and most recently placed second runner up in the inaugural Pole and Aerial All Stars competition.

Kristy’s pole routines incorporate a range of dance styles including hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary and musical theatre. She has choreographed routines for some of the world’s most renowned performers. “I couldn’t wait to meet Kristy Sellars – choreography guru- when I toured Australia last year. I jumped at the chance to get her to help choreograph my 1920s piece for the UK professional championships 2013.” Says UK Champion Bendy Kate. “I really recommend using Kristy as a choreographer!” New Zealander, Karry Summers had previously never let anybody choreograph her routines but was “blown away” by Kristy’s “style and creativity”. Kristy also collaborated with Sergia Louise Anderson who says “Her talent as a choreographer, dancer, artist, and teacher is unparalleled, and her professionalism, presence, attention to detail, musicality and ability to use story/character is impeccable.”

Kristy Sellars exceptionally talented Australian pole dancer and Miss Pole Dance Victoria winner 2012-13 is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You started pole dancing in 2007 and reached the pinnacle of success by winning the 2012-13 title of Miss Pole Dance Victoria. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

This was certainly one of my career highlights and it fell within a week of my daughter’s first birthday. Being so far behind the rest of the pole world after giving birth made me extremely determined to train harder than I ever had. I created a training program for myself that included cross endurance training, strengthening exercises on the pole and a strict healthy eating plan as well as training the choreography and evolving the routine everyday. I think being so determined is what ultimately lead to the win!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You collaborated with 2013 U.S. National Pole Level 4 Champion Sergia Louise Anderson. Tell us about this experience of your’s?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

Sergia is a beautiful person and an extremely talented poler. Meeting her was great but when we trained together I felt like I’d found my ‘pole soul’ mate! Hehe. We created together so easily, moved in a similar way and had a ball bouncing ideas and energy off of each other. She’s someone I really wish I could collaborate with more often, and luckily for me she’s coming back to Australia in October this year!!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

In a typical week I do, interval sprint training, upper body and core strength on and off the pole, continuous dance for extra endurance, stretching, foam rolling, massage, new tricks training on the pole… Ouchies! As well as teaching classes! I try to dedicate at least 4 hours per day when comp training/ 5-6 days a week, and off comp training I probably only do about an hour on top of my usual classes… That being said, the pole world doesn’t exactly have an ‘off competition season’ yet, so training is pretty much all year round!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

Yes, when training for a comp I try to stick to mainly meat and vegetables with maybe one piece of grain bread with breakfast and the odd sweet potato every few days. I also have protein shakes (not replacing meals).

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding pole dancing girls who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of pole dancing ?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

My advice would be to realize that you don’t need any special or amazing skills to start on the road to being successful, your success relies solely on the belief that your body will do anything your mind decides. And then not giving up until you reach those goals.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after winning 2012-13 title of Miss Pole Dance Victoria?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

Before I won I felt focused on just performing the routine as well as I physically could. Doing everything possible in the lead up training so that when I stepped off stage I’d know there was nothing more I could do to win.

There are always things I think I could do better but I was pretty happy with my performance and glad all of the costume parts worked smoothly. When they announced that I’d won it was realisation that the hard work had paid off. It was amazing.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your pole routines that you incorporate with a range of dance styles including hip-hop, lyrical, contemporary and musical theater?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

My background is dance, so I like to push the boundaries in the pole world and try to create new shows that are original and innovative. I don’t necessarily choose a style of dance that I want to do, I just decide on a song that moves me and choreograph to it, try to make the music visible:-)

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influencer and motivator in your success in the field of your career in competitive pole dancing ?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

Anyone doing something innovative and out of the box. In any area of pole… Tricks, dance, entertainment etc. and also all areas of dance and movement!

I have a great support around me in the girls at my studio and also my partner, which always helps to get through the difficult days.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your endeavor in the field of pole dance choreography?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

Choreography has always been my passion, even when I did regular dance. I’ve recently started getting a great amount of work choreographing for pole dancers and aerialists all over the world! Thanks to the internet it makes it possible to create entire routines that meet the performers specifications and competition criteria and teach it all online.

And the really exciting news recently is the release of my new brand ‘The Key To Choreography’. It includes a DVD, workshop and handbook, all dedicated to helping performers piece together a performance routine and unlock the performer inside! It goes into detail about mapping music, choosing concept, creating characters and even costume. Books and DVDs available at www.thekeytochoreography.com

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about the activities of your venture “PhysiPole Studios” in Ballarat ?

Ms. Kristy Sellars:

PhysiPole Studios originally started in Warrnambool with me renting a space for a few hours each weekend to teach some pole dancing classes. It’s now grown to 4 locations, Ballarat, Bendigo, Melton and recently re-opening of Warrnambool at a bigger and better venue. Bendigo and Melton are franchises so the Ballarat and Warrnambool studios are mine.

The studios offer pole dancing, aerial hoop, general fitness classes, exotic dance, hip hop, gogo, men’s pole, hens parties and more. PhysiPole has grown far beyond my expectations and the sense of community within the studios is really something to be proud of.
