Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You discovered your passion for surfing at a very early age and followed your dreams riding your first big wave at Guéthary, France. Walk us through your fantastic journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Léa Brassy:

I began surfing at age 12 on the beaches of Normandy thanks to my older brother and his friend. I was training for competitive swimming at that time so I was fit and confident in the water. Discovering the ocean was a whole new level of experience and I quickly got addicted to the feeling of freedom. Surfing has driven my choice in life ever since, always being in the front row of my priorities. I lived different locations in France then in the world in search for waves, wilderness, and cultural experiences around the ocean.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You’ve surfed in some of the coldest regions of the world like Greenland, Norway and Iceland. What is the experience like surfing in such cold regions?

Ms. Léa Brassy:

I crew onboard a sailboat to Greenland but I did not get the chance to surf there.

Surfing cold water is unique as it means being in an environment you’re not supposed to be in. Everything is a more intense experience than usual surfing. Landscapes are bigger, whiter; your eyes have a hard time to believe the surroundings are real. And then sensations are also stronger.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Like any other sport, surfing requires you to be fit and healthy. What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Léa Brassy:

I practice yoga and stretching on a daily bases. I focus on core strength, as it is really important in surfing, to counter-balance the paddling effort that is not very ergonomic for the back but also to feel stable and strong on my feet. But most of my workout is out in the ocean.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your diet or food plan that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit.

Ms. Léa Brassy:

My diet is more of a common sense, general line, that is to eat non-processed, locally produced and seasonal food. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, it’s my base, and I make sure I have quality carbs and vegetable proteins from cereals and beans. I eat less and less dairy, as I feel better without it. And for meat and fish, I want to know they are from wild catch or from sustainable non-intensive farming. I am happy with vegetarian meal if I don’t have quality animal proteins. My favorite is to hunt for my own fish. It’s the most sustainable way to get fish, but it’s also a great journey to find peace within me and be connected to Nature. It makes sense from start to finish.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to your inspiring short film ‘Being There’. Also, tell us about your experience shooting it.

Ms. Léa Brassy:

Being There is my first experience directing a film. I wanted to picture surf adventure in a different way, with more female sensitivity, and focused on the experience rather than the achievement. I also wanted to highlight a love relationship that uses their passion as a way to get stronger together rather than a topic for distortion. We had fun shooting, as we knew we wanted this to be documented, it was motivating.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Having traveled the world and been able to see some breath-taking and exotic locations, share with us your Top 5 Destinations to Surf in the World.

Ms. Léa Brassy:
  1. North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Because surfing is in everyone’s blood. It remains the ultimate experience of surf culture to me.
  2. As it’s our French version of the North Shore.
  3. California, for its endless right hander point breaks.
  4. Lofoten Islands of Norway, for the breath-taking winter landscapes.
  5. French Polynesia, for the intense blue of the Pacific Ocean over there.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are also the surf ambassador for Patagonia. Tell us more about it.

Ms. Léa Brassy:

Patagonia’s mission is to build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. The values carried by Patagonia are to a company scale what I carry as an individual. Therefore, I love my role in the company. I share my passions through story telling and participate in product development, which I love too.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Léa Brassy:

I would like to empower women to believe in their instincts and their natural strength to spread love and change around them. We can initiate change for a healthier environment, here and now. Today, I would like each reader to take a look at their lifestyle and pledge to make a difference, whether it’s refusing single-use plastic containers or hanging their laundry instead of using the dryer.
