Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Your mom was a dancer and put you in a dance class when you were only 2 years old. You started competing at the age of 7 and then transitioned into competing in ballroom after college. Walk us through your incredible dancing journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

It technically all began thanks to my dance teacher of 15 years Paula Abbott. She continued to feed my love for dance every day after school and is responsible for teaching me technique and my foundation of dance. After her, I continued to dance as an officer on my high school drill team and took a short break in college only to reaffirm my love for dance. After college, I trained and competed with Van Dance CT until broadcast began to demand all of my time. Even though I stopped competing, I continuously trained with Michael Leon Thomas at Alvin Ailey in Manhattan and with Steve Ewing at the Edge Performing Arts Center in LA. I honestly can’t imagine my life without dance. Sometimes it expresses what you are feeling better than words and got me through a lot of difficult times.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How are you able to take out time for dancing, considering your full-time profession of broadcasting acquires most of your time?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

That’s honestly why I had to quit competing. Well, that and I found dancing that often wasn’t kind on my body the older I got. It took a torn meniscus to convince me of that. [Laughs.] Now I’ve changed the way I view dance…as self-expression, art and exercise as opposed to a competition. Every now and then after a great class, I think to myself that I could make time to compete again. Physical health and mental health are important. You make the time to care for those things.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your dance routine?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

I always warm-up with stretching and a lot of abdominal work, especially planks. Everything stems from a strong core in dance. Then it depends on what style of dance I’m doing. If it’s ballet or contemporary class, next it’s lot of demi-plies or grand-plies to work my core, glutes and thighs. If it’s salsa or any other style of Latin ballroom dance, then most of the exercises require hip movements and twisting of the core that will help trim your waste, while being a killer cardio workout.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you think dance is one of the best workout routines? How?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

100 percent! It’s the only workout I can think of where you engage every muscle in your body while moving and getting your cardio in and having fun. Most days I wake up and discover a new muscle I didn’t know existed because I’m sore from class and my workout. But my favorite part about dance, is that it’s a mental workout as well. Picking up routines that quickly is not as easy as the Dancing With the Stars pros make it look.

Share with us your Top 5 Favorite Dance Moves.

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

1. I love the traditional salsa steps because it’s easy for me to teach anyone and once they get it, you can build a whole routine from it. It’s fun to watch especially men catch on and build confidence from dance.

2. Any difficult lift. If I see a crazy lift in a dance on DWTS or So You Think You Can Dance, I’ll head straight to the studio with my friend Jared and figure out how to do it.

3. I love the Spanish Drag step in the Tango. It’s such a dramatic step for a dramatic dance.

4. Anytime a dancer does a headwhip in a jazz or hip-hop dance, I’m secretly jealous because it looks cool and last time I attempted, I threw my neck out of alignment.

5. Cuban Motion. It’s difficult to learn, but once you do, it’s impossible to stop practicing everywhere!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you plan on making dance a more important part of your life in the future?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

My excuse before was always that I travel so much, that it would be hard to get in competition mode again without work interruptions, but then Val & Maks Chmerkovskiy opened up Dance With Me studios in just about every state and now I no longer have an excuse. [Laughs.] I just want to dance until my body will no longer let me.

What are your 3 Favorite Healthy Recipes that you absolutely love?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

My favorite recipe is my boyfriend’s Vegan Chickpea Pesto Pasta. He sautés mushrooms in coconut oil with broccoli and throws it over chickpea fusilli with his top secret vegan pesto sauce. When we first started dating, I requested it every single night. Then I realized I needed to double-up on my dance classes if I was going to eat pasta for dinner every night. [Laughs.] Everything in moderation.

My other two favorite recipes are my NFL Sunday Jambalaya with quinoa, turkey sausage and shredded chicken. A much healthier and protein packed version of your traditional New Orleans-style jambalaya. And finally, my Kitchen Sink Vegan Bowl where I throw roasted broccoli, chickpeas and sweet potatoes over rice or quinoa and top with a homemade garlic tahini sauce and avocado. I’m constantly looking for new healthy recipes. I’ll be up until 1 a.m. most nights just looking at food blogs.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Lindsay  McCormick:

Coming from a male-dominated industry such as sports, I realize how important it is to encourage each other as women and support each other when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. My friends help keep me on track with waking up early to go to the gym even on days when I’d rather sleep in and to stay on track with my health goals even when I’d rather down a pint of gelato. This site is THAT encouraging friend to women!
