Lisa Ellis: American Professional Mixed Martial Artist Reveals Her Workout & Diet

Lisa EllisLisa Ellis is an American professional mixed martial artist. She has fought in HOOKnSHOOT, Smackgirl, DEEP, Bellator Fighting Championships and Invicta FC. Ellis made her professional mixed martial arts debut on November 6, 2004 at HOOKnSHOOT – Evolution. She faced Mandy Stewart and was defeated by submission due to a triangle choke in the first round.

She has won three professional title belts. She hold four Fila No-Gi Grappling World Championships and one World title in the Fila Gi grappling championships. She is a multiple-time national Fila grappling champion. She has been ranked #1 for many years at 105 pounds and have remained in the top 5 at 105 and 115 for the past eight years.

Ellis entered the 2005 HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix on November 19, 2005, but was defeated by Molly Helsel in the second round. On November 15, 2006, Ellis faced Miku Matsumoto at Smackgirl – Women Hold Their Ground. She won the fight by submission due to a scarf hold armlock in the first round.

Ellis made her Fatal Femmes Fighting debut at FFF 1 – Asian Invasion on February 17, 2007. She faced Masako Yoshida in the main event for the FFF Flyweight Championship. Ellis won the fight by Unanimous Decision after five rounds. She defended her FFF title against Taeko Nagamine at FFF 2 – Girls Night Out on July 14, 2007. Ellis won the fight by rear-naked choke submission in the first round.

She returned to Fatal Femmes Fighting at FFF 3 – War of the Roses on November 3, 2007. Ellis moved up in weight to 135 pounds and faced Megumi Yabushita in a non-title fight. She defeated Yabushita by Unanimous Decision.

Ellis entered the 2008 Smackgirl World ReMix Tournament on February 14, 2008. She faced Ayumi Saito and defeated Saito by submission due to a toe hold late in the first round. On May 24, 2010, Ellis announced that she had signed with Bellator Fighting Championships. She faced Stephanie Frausto at Bellator 22 and won the fight by technical submission due to a rear-naked choke in the first round.

Ellis signed on to be part of the Bellator Season Three 115-pound women’s tournament and she faced Aisling Daly in the first round. The fight was originally scheduled for Bellator 25, but instead took place at Bellator 26 on August 26, 2010. Ellis won the fight via unanimous decision.

On July 14, Ellis faced Amy Davis in a 110-pound title fight at United Combat Sports: Caged Combat 6. She defeated Davis by armbar submission in the first round. Ellis co-owns the United Training Center gym with fellow fighter Eddy Ellis.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You were a wrestling champion in college. You made your professional mixed martial arts debut was on November 6, 2004 at HOOKnSHOOT – Evolution. You have fought in Smackgirl, DEEP, Bellator Fighting Championships, Invicta FC and Ultimate Fighting Championship. You reached the pinnacle of success when you won the World Grappling Championships Gold Medalist 2007. Tell us about your journey that took you to where you are now in the world of being a woman mixed martial art fighter? What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: Well not quite a champion in college but I did become an All American my freshman year at the Senior Open National Championships in 2002. After a year in college I found myself a bit lost, had gained 40+ pounds and wasn’t doing anything to better myself. I finally had enough and joined a MMA gym that was primarily stand up.

I would get so frustrated but would return every day and try harder. After about 5 months I took my first amateur fight and it was all over from there. I went on to take my first Pro fight at Hook n Shoot back in 2004 and lost. I then went on to win my next 6 fights with one title belt from Canada and winning fights in Japan for Smackgirl.

My first fight in Japan was the absolute most exciting!!! I felt like I was on top of the world. I had never dreamed I would be in Japan competing. My boyfriend (now husband) and I couldn’t believe we were flown out to Japan for free, hotel free, tour guide free, daily per diem and even payed to fight and win. Just amazing and still makes my heart flutters thinking about that trip. I have been so blessed to be able to visit and compete in over 8 different countries and to walk away with 5 Grappling world title and and several MMA wins. It’s been such a blessing to be part of.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Elaborate on your spectacular achievement of winning the FFF Flyweight Championship defeating Masako Yoshida on February 17, 2007 at Los Angeles, California, United States?

Ms. Lisa Ellis:
In 2007 a new promotion came forward trying to promote WMMA. I was asked to headline their fist show and fight for their belt. I fought Masako Yoshida. It was a fun fight for me. I had a great chance to try some new techniques I had been working on. I won all five rounds and was the first ever Fatal Femmes Fighting Champion. Good times.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
On July 14, 2012 you won against Amy Davis in the event UCS – Caged Combat 6 at Grand Ronde, Oregon, United States. Tell us about this winning fight and how did you feel on the winning the bout?

Ms. Lisa Ellis:
I took this fight after a very controversial loss to Jessica Penne. Jessica and I were having a great fight but in the 3rd round her head collided with mine and crushed my nose. We continued to fight but I could breath with all the blood and she got a TKO on me. My first ever TKO loss in 25 + fights. I took the fight with Amy a few months later and just went out and did my job. Took her down and submitted her with an arm bar.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You possess an exceptional fighter physique. What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Lisa Ellis:
I do a lot of different kinds of working out. I like to lift weights and do stations. I also like to spar and grapple but those activities hurt my body a lot and I can only do them a few times a week. Getting older equals everything hurting a whole lot more.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: I don’t follow a specific diet plan. I just eat very healthy 90% of the time. Sometimes I have to make sure I’m eating enough during times I am training for my fight. I like to eat veggies and proteins but I do have a huge weakness for sugar. I absolutely love ice cream and pizza. I would eat it everyday if it didn’t hurt my stomach!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding mixed martial artist girls who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of women mixed martial art professional fighting?

Ms. Lisa Ellis:
Well first off I’d say you are in one of the toughest sports out there, but also one of the most rewarding in many ways. MMA is a great sport but very taxing on you. I want to tell all the people out there to enter MMA knowing it’s difficult and to keep trying. It’s a hard sport but it’s totally obtainable to learn. Just takes time so stick with it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You must had your share of injuries during professional fights. How you were able to overcome such a physical injury/setback and what advice you can give to fellow fighter person in a similar situation?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: Yes, MMA has many injuries that plague us. I’ve had many injuries such as hand and nose breaks, sprained and torn muscles and ligaments. I was able to overcome these injuries by not letting it get me down but rather look at it as something that was suppose to happen. If I hurt my upper half of my body I work my lower half and vice versa.

There is typically something we can work on with any injury we get. But the biggest thing I can say is let your injury heal. No need to rush it!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
With exceptional hard work you are credited with all your achievements. Do you believe that does the hand of Providence (Supreme Being) played a role in
your success?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: I believe my success has a lot to do with my persistence and hard work. If I had quit the many times I wanted to I would never be where I am today. It hasn’t been easy but it has been worth it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You were blessed with your first daughter, Elenor in 2013 and you were offered to join “The Ultimate Fighter “. Tell us about measures you took for your post pregnancy recovery and your decision to be back in the fighting ring?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: You know this was a very hard decision to make. My husband stood by me 100% and I knew he could take care of everything while I was gone. He had to take care of our 1 year old and our business. Tough thing to do and he knocked it outta the park. As for me, I was about 6 months Post pregnancy when I heard about the Ultimate Fighter. I just knew I had to try out or I would regret it.

I made it past the first few interviews and next thing I knew I was leaving. It was so hard to actually leave. It broke my heart and being stuck in the house being injured was just awful. I wish I had a better experience but it just wasn’t in my deck of cards. I don’t think my body was ready to compete at that high of a level either but looking back I would do it again…for a whole lot more money.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career in competitive women mixed martial art professional fighting?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: My husband. He’s amazing!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Lisa Ellis: My message to all is to dream big, try as many things out there as you can because we are only here for a short time. LIVE life and have fun. Smile no matter what and push through the tough times.
