In 2014, she qualified for the World Cup Final in Lausanne for the first time. Unruh represented Germany at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro winning the silver medal. Her Silver medal was the first Individual medal her country has ever won at the Olympic Games. In 2017, Unruh won the gold medal at The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland.

Women Fitness joins the Olympian for an interesting conversation about her passion for archery and how to make it big in this sport.

Namita Nayyar:

Starting off as a swimmer, you made a mark for yourself in the field of archery, what attracted you toward this sport?

LISA UNRUH:

Yes that’s true. I started as a swimmer and went to the sports school for better training conditions and better coaches.

But after nearly two years I wasn’t good enough to go further. My swimmer coach told my mother that the coaches from Archery are looking for new athletes and I could try it. So I tried it and I was so excited from this kind of sport. To have a bow in your hands and to try to shoot you arrows straight in the middle of the target was so cool and it made me completely happy. The fascination is the mix between mental strength, coordination and muscle power. If you control all these components you will be the best archer in the world.

Namita Nayyar:

You took part in the 2016 Summer Olympics winning the silver medal, achieving the first Individual medal for your country at the Olympic Games. In 2017, you won the gold medal at The World Games 2017. Being a world champion and olympian, were your eyes always set on this goal? What are your 5 tips for beginners who aspire to be like you?

LISA UNRUH:

Yes my biggest dream was to be the best archer in the world and since my childhood to take part in the Olympic Games and I did it. To win a medal at the Olympics has been the greatest thing in my life until now.

Ok some tips from me.

  1. Be patient, sometimes you need more time to develop your technique.
  2. Listen to your coach.
  3. Watch all the YouTube videos from “World Archery” because you can see all the good archers competing and you can learn a lot from them.
  4. If you want to be a good archer, you have to train six times a week. It’s not necessary to make a lot of arrows but it’s really important to do it continuously.
  5. You should often shoot for score during practice.
Namita Nayyar:

How do you start your day? Every sportsperson has a disciplined routine to succeed what do you say on that?

LISA UNRUH:

I start my day with meditation and yoga, sun salutation. This is important for me because the meditation helps me on the mental site and yoga is good for my body and my flexibility. After this I eat breakfast. Sometimes I eat yogurt with fruits or chia pudding with fruits or just a smoothie. It depends on what I like that day.

Namita Nayyar:

“My favourite match was the world indoor championship gold medal match in 2016 against Natalia Lesniak.”  Before taking up archery as a sport, what are the key points to keep in mind? List top 3.

LISA UNRUH:

First of all you have to have fun. That’s why we are doing Archery.

Second thing is you have to be brave and self-confident. Trust yourself that you will take every arrow straight in the middle.

And last but not least practice your technique every single day, instead of Sunday.

Namita Nayyar:

Three components that are a must in your fitness regime? Cardio, flexibility & strength training rate them in the order you preference?

LISA UNRUH:

I do weight training three times the week to avoid shoulder pain and to keep my body fit.

Running is also an important thing for me. Our competitions often take place in hot countries and I need to hold my concentration. I do it twice a week.

Every single morning I meditate and this helps me to to build my mental strength.

Once a week I attend a yoga class.

Namita Nayyar:

Diet you follow? Are there any foods that you try to avoid or keep to a minimum?

LISA UNRUH:

Oh yes I value eating healthy organic food and I love to cook fresh for myself and my family.  I often eat vegetables with lentils, millets, potatoes or quinoa in a cocos- curry sauce. I only eat venison if I eat meat.

I avoid to eat sugar or other sugar substitutes because it’s unhealthy and hampers my blood sugar level. Sometimes I allow myself to eat something sweet, ice cream for example but it’s just once in a week.

I also avoid eating bread or other grain things because I have problem in digesting gluten.

Namita Nayyar:

Resolutions or goals for 2020? How do you like to go about giving back to the society which has been an integral part of your success?

Lisa Unruh:

My goals for 2020 are to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. We have a few trails next year and if I managed that it would be a big dream for me to get a medal with my team at the Olympics.

Without my team, my sponsors and supporters I wouldn’t be what I am. I’m really thankful and I often represent them at social media or share some new products etc.
