Magdalena Röck unveils her workout, diet and fitness secrets in an exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President – Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You started climbing at a very young age in 2002 and since then there has been no looking back. You reached the pinnacle of success in Rock Climbing by winning the IFSC Climbing Worldcup in 2014. Tell us about this spectacular journey and how it all began?

Ms. Magdalena RöckFirst of all, I would like to point out that I am very successful in the IFSC world cup circuit. These competitions take place solely on artificial climbing walls to reach equal opportunity for all athletes.

In order to be successful in the IFSC world cups it is essential to do rock climbing, but only in addition to climbing in gyms. Doing so some benefits can be: To be able to pick up new movement patterns, which can’t be trained in gyms, to compensate the hard training and becoming a motivation boost.

Indeed, I started climbing in 2002. But I have to point out, that in this period of time I was looking out for a team sport. Unfortunately, in the area where I come from, such opportunities were not existent for girls. Because of my little brother, who already started climbing, I tried out climbing. So I started climbing once a week without focusing on training – just for fun.

In 2005 I joined the climbing team Imst. There I got my first instructions in sport climbing. 2007, I started to train systematically. In 2009, I joined the performance Centre Innsbruck, where together with professional trainers the foundation were laid for international success.

From 2009 I was internationally successful in the junior categories. From 2011 I started in the senior category, immediately winning the bronze medal of the World Championship in Arco.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Magdalena RöckImproving your climbing is basically practiced by trial and error. In order to build up stamina you climb for example as many routes on a high level (personal level) as you can or several routes you climb twice without any break etc. Enhancing the maximal force of your muscles is reached by hard moves in the boulder gym. Other strength exercises are made on campus boards and I personally do yoga, additionally.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Magdalena RöckNaturally, body weight is a big deal in climbing. It is essential reaching and maintaining one’s individual “competition weight” to be able to reach your optimal performance.

I think it is extremely important to have a well – balanced nutrition, including sufficient amount of meat and fish for the protein supply and a decent quantity of carbohydrates depending on the intensity of your training. Additional to that it is necessary to pay attention to eating vegetables and fruits.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Rock Climbing requires a lot of outdoor training and activity. Share with us your skincare and haircare routine that you follow to cope up with the strenuous training?

Ms. Magdalena RöckYes, it is true, that I am spending much time outdoors, despite the fact, that most of my training takes place indoors.

Hard training surely affects skin and hair, but especially skincare. Because of the rough surface that climbing holds it is common that the skin of your fingertips is sore. To help curing the harmed skin I apply a special ointment on the relevant places.

Considering my haircare, I have no need in treating them in another way as other athletes of other sports. But generally I try to use natural cosmetic products.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Other than climbing, are there any other sports that you like to indulge in?

Ms. Magdalena RöckThe pure climbing training lasts 4-6 hours at least 5 times a week. That’s why I can only practice other sports in an entirely regenerative way. Because living in the midst of the Tyrolean mountains I have plenty possibilities. I am really into running in the woods, hiking on the mountains and doing ski tours.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding rock climbers who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of Rock Climbing?

Ms. Magdalena RöckTo that I would like to mention, that as long as you have fun doing it you can easily envelope the necessary ambition to reach every realistic goal you want to.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: How did you feel before and after winning the IFSC Climbing World Cup in 2014?

Ms. Magdalena RöckOf course, it was a big day for me, but in review it was in particular the last main step I could do in this sport, except winning the world championship. This moment was the reward of years of hard work. The only thing what really changed after my victory were the expectations of my surrounding and of course myself.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career in competitive rock climbing?

Ms. Magdalena RöckI had important trainers, who brought me step to step where I am now. My first trainer was Mike Gabl, who awakened my fascination for sport climbing. Rupert Messner followed Mike Gabl, showing me the complex mechanisms of training. My current trainer – Martin Hammerer an absolute specialist, who always radiates calmness.

But the greatest influence for my climbing in the last years was/is my younger brother. Benni is also a successful climber, who won 3 times the world junior championship title. Also an absolute specialist and a top trainer for me. He always knows how to enhance my motivation, making rough but decent statements.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What according to you are the Top 3 Fitness Tips for Rock Climbing?

Ms. Magdalena RöckBasically, the more you climb the higher your climbing level will be (limits to higher performances can be your technique or restricted training knowledge)

Pay attention to a balanced strength and stamina training (only if you train both your level will rise significantly)

If possible go climbing with someone, whose level is higher than yours (so you can watch and learn)

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have won IFSC Climbing Worldcup (2014), World Youth Championship (2013), the European Youth Championship (2013), the European Youth Championship (2012) and many more Championships. Tell us about the most memorable experience that you’ve had across all these Championships?

Ms. Magdalena RöckIn 2011 my training performance was good, but because I was still in the youth national team I didn’t know I was allowed to compete on the world championship until two weeks before it took place. With the age of 17, I surprisingly won the bronze medal in this competition!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have featured in many magazines and newspapers. How does it fell that you are able to inspire and motivate so many individuals?

Ms. Magdalena RöckI am not sure, if I can claim to motivate or inspire anybody. However, having attention for what I am doing is I think the most appreciation one can get and therefore I am highly grateful.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?
