‘New Year, New Me’: Makeup Tips for 2023 by Christina Flach

make up

Out with the old, in with the new! As we leave 2022 behind, we enter a new year, with new trends, new products, and new makeup hacks.

Christina Flach, a celebrity hair and makeup artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area has compiled her top makeup tips of 2023 that will make the phrase ‘new year, new me’ come to life!

Avoid using airbrushed products

Airbrushed looks were a popular trend in 2022, but I am happy to leave this trend in the past. Airbrushing is great for people with severe acne or skin concerns but is not necessary for the average person. The full-coverage product will cake on your face, making your skin look unnecessarily dry. Instead of airbrushing, head to tip number two for some great alternatives!

Less is more

When it comes to makeup for 2023, less is definitely more! Instead of reaching for a full-coverage foundation, try swapping it out for products that will enhance your natural beauty instead of overshadowing it. In place of foundation, try a tinted moisturizer to give you a touch of color! If you struggle with discoloration, you can use a color-correcting cream to even out the skin and eliminate any unwanted redness. Use concealer sparingly and only where you need it to avoid unnecessary caking.

Pour some sugar on me!

Shaving? Waxing? So 2022. In 2023, we are throwing out razors and painful wax strips and hopping on a trend that is better for your skin, your health, and even your pain tolerance. Sugaring is a natural alternative to waxing and shaving that effectively removes the entire hair follicle while only clinging to dead skin and hair. Waxing only removes part of the follicle, which leads to ingrown hairs, and adheres to the entire top layer of skin, which causes pain and irritation. Our favorite sugaring brand is Sugar Sugar Wax! Each product is made using clean ingredients and sustainable packaging that are so gentle you can even use them on your face! In fact, sugaring is great for acne because it also removes any dead skin you may have!

Stay sustainable and come clean!

One trend I look forward to carrying from 2022 into the new year is clean and sustainable beauty products. With so many amazing brands entering the market, we can finally give our health and our skin what it deserves. My favorite brands are Ilia and Kosas, but Versed is an amazing budget-friendly option! These brands prioritize quality, clean ingredients that don’t harm the environment.

Beautiful and bronze

One of the biggest trends taking 2023 by storm is bronzing drops. Drunk Elephants D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Bronzing Drops went viral on Tiktok for their beautiful glow and stellar skin benefits, but their one drawback is the $64 price tag. Luckily, Saie’s Glowy Super Gel and Versed’s Mood Lightning Luminizing Glow Drops are great dupes that come in at $28 and $17.99 respectively. The best part? Both brands are sustainable and clean!

Beauty from the inside out

A good makeup routine starts with taking care of yourself inside. It is crucial to prioritize healthy eating and incorporate supplements such as probiotics and collagen. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin clear, and reduce anxiety-prone breakouts by practicing meditation and exercise. The better you take care of yourself inside, the better you will look and feel on the outside!

Plump it up!

We have seen a significant rise in the lip-plumping market in the last few years. 2023 is no different, but with so many products on the market, how do you know which ones actually work? “For a subtle and hydrating plump, I recommend Buxom’s Power-Full Plump Lip Balm. For a more dramatic effect, I recommend the Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Plumper. At night, I love to use the Lawless Forget the Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask. My favorite drugstore brand for lip plumping is Milani, specifically their Keep it Full Maxxx Balmshell Lip Plumping Balm.” adds Christina, who is a beauty expert on NBC’s CA Live, and a guest on a variety of podcasts.

Mascara Makeover

If I had to choose one makeup product, and one makeup product only, it would be mascara. I have spent years perfecting my mascara routine with the best products and techniques. First, make sure your eyes are completely clean. Always take off your mascara at the end of the day using apricot oil and makeup wipes to avoid damaging your fragile lashes. Next, use an eyelash curler to lift the lashes. Try to get as close to the lid as possible and squeeze roughly 20 times on each side. If your fingers touch while you’re curling, it’s time to get a new curler. After this, take your favorite mascara (mine are Macstack by Mac and They’re Real by Benefit) and apply to start at the bottom of your lash. Extend out to the corner, pulling upward and outward. Repeat this process on the other eye and then apply a second coat on each eye. Remember to replace your mascara every three months and avoid waterproof mascara as it will damage your lashes.

Light and lifted lids

Now that we’ve perfected our mascara routine, let’s talk about the rest of the eyes. 2023 is all about light and brightness! My favorite lid colors this year are gold, cream, light pink, and white. I love adding shimmer to any eye look this year and pairing it with a thin line of eyeliner. My current obsession is Viseart Eye Shadows because of their beautiful pigment and reasonable prices!

Making me Blush

I love a good powder blush as much as the next person, but sometimes it’s just not convenient. My current obsession is using blush sticks, specifically the On the Glow Blush by Pixi. These sticks are hydrating, perfect for travel, and come in a variety of neutral shades that will suit different skin tones. Plus, you can use it on your lips and eyes! Win, win, win!
