Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Mayling Ng, exceptionally talented martial arts expert and actress,Here she talks about her workout, diet, beauty secrets and her journey as an action film star.

Namita Nayyar:

You were born in the UK being of Chinese-Singaporean-European descent, you spent your early years in the Canary Islands Tenerife before moving to Singapore and eventually to Los Angeles. You played strong warrior characters and did your own action scenes. Your credits include “Wonder Woman”“Lady Bloodfight,” and “The Scorpion King: Book of Souls,” This later propelled your career to the height where you have been at the top of the world as an action star. Tell us more about your professional journey of exceptionally hard work, tenacity, and endurance?

MaylingNg:

I started my acting career working in Hong Kong martial arts movies, which helped open doors and into comic book and superhero movies here in Hollywood. So, it’s a Hong Kong to Hollywood story. I’ve had many career experiences ranging from owning restaurants to personal training, but six years ago I moved to LA decided to focus on my acting career and went all in for my dream to work in the film industry. Thankfully, I’ve been very fortunate to have been working consistently and I’m only just starting to establish myself.

Namita Nayyar:

You moved from the UK, Singapore to different parts of the world and finally to the US for your professional career. For an actress adjusting to new places with their own cultures it must be difficult and then to adjust with the acting career in a new location, what advice can you give to fellow actresses in a similar situation?

Mayling Ng:

To be honest, it wasn’t hard to adjust because I’ve always been a nomad. I moved when I was a kid to Tenerife. Then I was often flying between Singapore, Tenerife, and England on my own from age 13,.so it’s a way of life for me. It’s always been my decision and choice where to live but I think I’ve found my forever home since I moved to LA in 2016 where I have become more settled both physically and spiritually.

If an actor really wants to follow their dream: I came out of a small city, Liverpool in England, and I ended up in Hollywood. So, I’m proof anything is possible. If they want to follow their dream, they just have to take the chances, they have to grind and work hard. It seems all I do is work. However I have made more efforts to find a better work -life balance recently having made good friends here finally and spending time on other interests.

Namita Nayyar:

You are the leading Actress, Martial Artist, Fitness champion, Model, Brand Ambassador, and Fashion icon. How do you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?

Mayling Ng:

Really, it’s just about strying to do the best work that I can.. If I’m not filming, I’m reading scripts going to meetings and hustling for new opportunities. I also make sure I find time to work with my acting coach or accent coach, If not working, then I’m focusing on self-improvement, either in the gym or enjoying my kung Fu, learning new certifications in weaponry,so that all of my tools are polished and ready to go when called upon. I’m in a constant state of preparedness.

Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share?

Mayling Ng:

The only cardio I do is martial arts and weapons training, which also translates well with my work on-camera. Everyone thinks I’m like a wrestler or fighter because of my physique but I don’t spar or do MMA. I just do everything for camera and film so that it looks authentic.

In the gym, I changed my routine probably about 8 years ago and have a better body now than I did when I competed. I make sure to train by performing different compound movements every day mixed in with accessories, so I don’t over train and I’m burning calories 24/7. I don’t go into the gym and do individual body parts anymore since my training now combines strength with little rest which is my cardio. I work smarter now not harder.

Namita Nayyar:

How do you train your abs? One secret to your toned body.

Mayling Ng:

I do a lot of deadlifts and squats which trains your core to be tight. I’ll also occasionally do wheel crunches or hanging pull ups. But really it’s the diet that is so important and you basically see my abs only when I’m leaning out for work.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you take a special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Mayling Ng:

I flexible diet which is counting macros, protein, carbs, and fats. I adjust it to my goals at that time, whether I’m building muscle or I’m leaning out for a film. I base my protein grams to every pound of body weight.

I hit around 140- 150 pounds depending if filming, but I’ll probably have my protein up to 150-170 grams just to maintain all the muscle I have. Because I’m naturally athletic, it’s a lot harder to maintain, and then I split the remaining fats are 40% and carbs 60%.

Namita Nayyar:

Five foods you absolutely love and five you keep to a minimum.

Mayling Ng:

Five foods I love are: my protein ice cream, shrimp burgers with a protein wrap, popcorn, protein pancakes, and low fat peanut butter with almond milk and peanut butter powder. These are my five staples and I have them when dieting down, filming and even tomorrow before my photo-shoot.

I always make my protein drink into ice cream. I crush it with ice and throw in some dark low-fat cocoa chocolate. I have that every day. It tastes like ice cream, but its low macros. All my tips are on my YouTube channel YouTube.com/maylingng

Five foods I want to keep to a minimum:

Dim sum, pizza, champagne, Malaysian curry, and Singapore chili crab.

Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your hair care and skincare routine.

Mayling Ng:

I think glowing is from the inside out, so I take Vital Proteins collagen. I don’t take any products I don’t believe in and the collagen really help with my skin, nails, and the roots of my hair. I also use Aura Silk from facial surgeon Dr. Ben Talei which is a product made of 20 different essential oils. I use it as a night-time serum and I massage it into my skin, especially after a hard day on set.

For my hair, the biggest thing I do is a coconut oil wrap once a week. I go to the gym with a coconut oil wrap, I’ll have one on the whole day. Also, I don’t own a hair dryer or straightener, I wash my hair, put some Olaplex in, and then brush it through to let it naturally.

Namita Nayyar:

Five skincare myths.

Mayling Ng:

One myth I suggest is:

Creams and other skin care products claiming to work like Botox or dermal injections. There is no such thing. However, there are multiple really good non-surgical procedures that you can do that are really good. For instance, the radio frequency micro needling treatment called Profound RF can take years off your face and in certain cases result in looking like you had a lift without going under the knife. I did Profound with Ben Talei last year and the lifting effects are amazing and they still keep coming.

Five athletic leisure brands you love to wear.

Mayling Ng:

Lululemon, Nike, Converse, Alo, and Grrrl Clothing (has some funky leopard skin pieces that I like).

Namita Nayyar:

Five travel destinations on your wish list.

Mayling Ng:

Fiji, Maldives, Australia,Hawaii , and Tulum (which I hope to get to before it gets even more touristy).

Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding actresses, who all are your fans and shall like to know from you for their climb to the ladder of success in the field of acting?

Mayling Ng:

Always say yes. Even if you don’t know how to do something, just say yes and you’ll learn to do it afterwards. Never say no, and never be scared. If you fall down, it’s fine because at least you tried and it was never a mistake it was a new experience.

Namita Nayyar:

You have done bold photo shoots in your films and on your Instagram handle @maylingng. How you are so body confident and advice to your compatriots?

Mayling Ng:

Because I have a bodybuilding background in figure and Bikini competitions and if you’ve worked hard for your gainz, then it’s one way to keep motivated. I show my physique in pictures and hopefully in an inspiring and tasteful way. There’s nothing wrong with feeling badass, and there’s nothing wrong with feeling yourself!

Namita Nayyar:

Your idea of a perfect date?

Mayling Ng:

Nothing fancy something conventional so I can get to know my date more easily. The Hollywood Bowl or Malibu Safari, sounds fun since I haven’t done either but always wanted to try both. I’m always the girl looking in the window and everyone’s having fun while I’m walking past, going to the gym or in transit on my way to a project. I’d like to stop and dance in the sun sometimes with friends or hopefully my forever guy.

Namita Nayyar:

You shall soon be starring in the DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action-adventure film “The Suicide Squad,” premiering in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, 2021. From writer/director James Gunn, the film features a collection of the most degenerate delinquents in the DC lineup. You are playing ‘Mongal,’ the daughter of the Ruler of Warworld‘Mongul the Elder’. Tell us more about your appearance and acting in this film?

Mayling Ng:

She’s very physically strong and mentally tough. She’s malevolent, evil, and stubborn, doesn’t care, and just goes after whatever she wants. Mongal is a strong muscular character in the DC Universe. Once I realized the character I was to play, I trained physically a lot heavier and stronger for that role.

Namita Nayyar:

You are joining as a lead in the film “Legend of the White Dragon” that is currently in production. You are playing police officer ‘Lieutenant Tek Boh,’ role. Tell us more about this amazing and challenging assignment in your career?

Mayling Ng:

Bat in the Sun productions actually approached me for their first full length feature on Instagram as we have mutual friends and they had seen my prior work. They wrote the role with me in mind which always a blessing but I forwarded them to my team, lol, because I get many requests through Instagram but most of them are just talk. I was actually surprised when I looked up what they did previously, their fanbase is huge and the work is incredible and showcases the talent of director and creator Aaron Schoenke.

Once working on that production, they actually upgraded my role from Police Officer to Lieutenant and gave me double the dialogue a few days into filming, which is always a bonus and always makes you feel motivated to give your best.the set was a really fun and carefree experience with such a tight unit that felt like family, as everyone was so very giving and creative.

Namita Nayyar:

You are a Certified NRA License Pistol, Shotgun, Rifle, Certified Knife Defense Martial Arts: Black Belt Shaolin Kung Fu, Weapons: Kwan-Dao, Single Broadsword, Double-hand Broadsword, BO Staff, Nun Chucks, Spear. You are in a pursuit to master the virtuosity of Shaolin Kung Fu 18 Weapons currently certified in 9. Tell us more about this exceptionally physically challenging passion of yours?

Mayling Ng:

I would watch martial arts with Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan as a kid. It was my dream to be in the Kumite. And then 15 years later, I’m standing there playing the villain in Hong Kong cinema. Some people like to run; some people like to go to the gym. The thing with weapons is it’s like a new skill, a new toy. And, the more that you learn, the more of a workout you get. It’s never boring. You’re always learning, always a student.. I don’t think you can ever master something – but as soon as I ‘have’ something down, I’m onin pursuit of my next challenge.

Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and the message for its visitors?

Mayling Ng:

I’m really excited to be on the cover of Women Fitness Magazine issue. Thank you so much for the most detailed and interesting questions. It’s an honor to be an inspiration to others.
