Women Fitness President talks to the musical artist Myra Melendez about her road to success.

Namita Nayyar:

Myra, at the age of 9 you composed you first song, and since then you developed the ability to interpret and write in Spanish and English. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Myra Melendez:

I always tried to learn the lyrics to the songs I heard on the radio. I would think to myself maybe they could’ve changed the lyric in the 1st verse or the melody of the bridge of the song. Then I thought why don’t I just try to write my own songs. So I began when I was nine, and I continued to stay consistent. I would study different songwriters and singers. Sometimes the lyrics would come first then the melody and other times the melody then the lyrics.

Namita Nayyar:

What inspired you to take up singing?

Myra Melendez:

As a child I would turn on the radio and listen to all kinds of stations. The sound of music and melodies caught my attention, and I knew that music was something I would want to do one day.

Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in the life of Myra, the artist.

Myra Melendez:

When I first get up I like to start my day with giving thanks and prayer. Then I’ll take a shower, get dressed, and do sit ups. I love to make smoothie bowls in the morning. I always find it’s more productive when I don’t check emails first thing in the morning and I go straight to the main goals of the day. Every day can be a little different for me since I’m an singer, actress, and model. Some days are filled with more singing then acting, and modeling vice versa. Everyday I do something towards each career which can be writing a song, auditioning, working on a film, or a photo shoot that day. Towards the end of the day I like to reflect on everything that was accomplished that day. Then before I go to bed I prepare my mind for the start of the next day.

Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?

Myra Melendez:

I like to start the day with ab workouts in the morning, and end it with ab workouts at night. I love to incorporate a lot of cardio such as running, or aerobics. Sometimes to make working out fun I will go dance at salsa and bachata events, or clubs. What makes it more fun is when I’m at these events and the DJ plays my Bachata song “Me Engañaste”.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Myra Melendez:

I’ve been on a plant-based vegan diet for about 7 years now. The majority of my diet is mostly raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. I have felt the best on this diet; I have so much energy. Just the other day someone told me I look 10 years younger then my age. I like to tell people to listen to their bodies and do what’s best for them. I feel that our bodies tell us what we need to do, but a lot of people tend to ignore their bodies. I have found that a plant-based diet not only helps my body but it also helps to save our planet. I read that researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73 per cent. I don’t see myself ever consuming meat again.

Namita Nayyar:

Training for singing requires long hours of practice to attain perfection. How do you go about prioritizing your day?

Myra Melendez:

One thing I love about not having a 9-5 is that everyday turns out different for me. I am an actress, singer, model, songwriter. I always plan to knock out the priority goals that I need to complete for that month. I try to limit as much distraction as possible. I currently don’t own a television. I know that for me that would be a distraction. For example, when I am working on a commercial and my day is mostly filled with acting. I will practice vocal rehearsals in the car, and when there’s downtime on set. Prioritizing my day it’s not waste time on stupid things, and distractions.

Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career?

Myra Melendez:

My mom has been an amazing motivator. She is businesswoman who is constantly working, investing in new things, and creating new ideas. She doesn’t stop. I think that’s where I get my work ethic from. I’ve taken her advice on life and businesses decisions. She has always supported me in anything I do. The career choices I’ve made most parents aren’t always that supportive. I am grateful to have that.

One of my influences has been Selena. I relate to her a lot. She accomplished so much in her life and I know she would’ve conquered the world. She pave the way for women like me. We are both bilingual and we are women in an industry that is still very much saturated by men. I am so happy to see more women and bilingual singers coming into this industry now.

Namita Nayyar:

You have written songs for indie movies, have collaborated alongside with producers and composers. You  have worked with artists such. as Mya, Trey Songz, Big Sean, Lil Wayne, Pitbull, and Daddy Yankee. Tell us about one of the most memorable experience that you may have had.

Myra Melendez:

Yes I have written songs for indie films! Its fun to watch my music playing in the background on a scene. I have met plenty of famous artist and have learned a lot working along side producers who produced for these artist. I have not worked with these artist, but I hope to one day be able to work alongside these artist.

Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding female singers who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Myra Melendez:

The music industry has been saturated with men. I feel that more doors are opening up for women. My advice to females and female artist would be to seek a career in something that truly makes you happy. Weather it’s producing music, songwriting, or singing. Continue to stay consistent with your craft.

Namita Nayyar:

Your 5 favorite music albums? Also from where do you derive your inspiration from while writing a song?

Myra Melendez:

When it’s comes to music I am really bad at choosing favorites because I love so many different styles of music. It’s hard to choose. If I were to choose I guess I would say Selena “Amor Prohibido”,  Mariah Carey “Day Dream” Bob Marley “Greatest Hits Album” Hector Lavoe “Greatest Hits Album” Michael Jackson “Bad”

Sometimes derive my inspiration from while writing a song from life experiences or stories of friends and family members. I have so many ideas in my head that it’s like there is movies playing in my head. With songwriting I can tell those movies in a song.

Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your preparations for upcoming songs. Your favorite among them.

Myra Melendez:

For the upcoming songs I am preparing artwork, music videos, and I have storyboards for the music videos. It’s hard to choose a favorite because I like them all. There is one song that is in Spanish that is a latino trap song, and I really feel that a lot of people will be able to relate to it.

Namita Nayyar:
