Natalia Grossman: World Champion Rock Climber Reveals Her Success Secret “Believe in yourself”

Natalia Grossman is an American professional rock climber. She represents the United States at IFSC Climbing World Cup in bouldering and lead. She won gold and a silver medal at the 2021 IFSC Climbing World Championships and has 14 podium finishes at Climbing World Cup events, including seven gold medals.

Grossman finished second in bouldering and combined disciplines at the 2019 IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships in Arco, Italy. In 2019, Grossman went undefeated in the domestic bouldering National Cup Series and won the USA Climbing 2020 Bouldering Open National Championship.

At the USA Climbing National Team Trials in March 2021, Grossman finished first in bouldering and second in lead, qualifying for the United States national team in both disciplines. In April 2021, Grossman advanced to the final and finished third at the opening Boulder World Cup of the 2021 IFSC Climbing World Cup season in Meiringen. In May 2021, across two IFSC events held in Salt Lake City, Grossman won her first two World Cup gold medals, topping all four boulders in the final in the first event and flashing all four final boulders in the second, beating Janja Garnbret, who also topped all four boulders, on attempts, becoming the first woman to beat Garnbret in a Boulder World Cup since 2018. In Lead, Grossman finished on the podium in four of the five events, winning two silver and bronze medals each, and finished second overall for the season.

Natalia Grossman took the gold medal in the women’s boulder competition on Friday 24th June 2022 at the IFSC World Cup in Innsbruck. The 20-year-old American has been on a roll in 2022, having won five-straight boulder gold medals in World Cup competition.

Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Natalia Grossman exceptionally talented World Champion professional rock climber, here she talks about her fitness routine and her journey to success.

Namita Nayyar:

You were born in Santa Cruz, California, United States. At the age of six years you began climbing at the Pacific Edge climbing gym, you joined the Zero Gravity team, and trained at Berkeley Ironworks. Later you became a professional rock climber. This propelled your career to the height where you have been at the top of the world as a leading rock climber player. Tell us more about this journey of hard work, tenacity, and endurance?

Natalia Grossman:

Between the times I was training in Berkeley to now, I moved to Boulder, Colorado. I have always been extremely motivated and have wanted to put my best work forward in anything that I do. Therefore, when I was 15 my family and I moved so that I could train with the best team in the country and improve my climbing skills. Although my parents had to make multiple sacrifices, it turned out to be “worth it,” and they love Boulder now!

Namita Nayyar:

You won the second position in bouldering and combined disciplines at the 2019 IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships in Arco, Italy. Tell us more about this winning and what had been a catalyst to achieve such spectacular winning in your rock climbing career?

Natalia Grossman:

In 2019, I began working on the mental scorch of climbing and began to see large improvements. I had also just spent a month in Europe training for this competition so I felt physically prepared too.

Namita Nayyar:

You represented the United States at IFSC Climbing World Cup in bouldering and lead, and have two Boulder World Cup wins at Salt Lake City in May 2021. You are the 2021 World Champion in bouldering. Elaborate more about this exceptional achievement of your professional rock climbing career?

Natalia Grossman:

These achievements definitely took me by surprise. However, after the first success, I began to see what was possible and I set my goals higher and higher. Although that comes with lots of added pressure, it makes the successes feel 100% better since I know I’ve had to work hard for them.

Namita Nayyar:

You had a dream run in rock climbing competitions in the year 2021. At the USA Climbing National Team Trials in March 2021, you finished first in bouldering and second in lead, qualifying for the United States national team in both disciplines. Which of these rock climbing competitions do you find most challenging and gave you the feeling of great accomplishment? Tell us a memorable moment in these rock climbing competitions and how these win in your career has been a turning point to reach greater heights in your Rock climbing career?

Natalia Grossman:

The feeling of winning my first World Cup is something I’ll never forget. In the moment, I knew I had what it took so it was difficult to stay composed. I had to stick this massive jump on the last climb and I kept missing, however, when there were only 40 seconds remaining I somehow managed to stick it.

Topping the last boulder secured me the win and gave me a great sense of accomplishment. After winning my first World Cup, I also gained a sense of confidence which has been a great turning point in my career.

Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share?

Natalia Grossman:

I tend to focus on comps style boulders as well as spray wall boulders. Throughout the week I also hangboard and do short strength or power workouts depending what point of the season we are in.

Namita Nayyar:

Do you take a special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Natalia Grossman:

I don’t have a strict menu that I follow to remain healthy, however, I have been a pescatarian for about 6 years and I haven’t had red meat in about 10 years.

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Share with us your hair care and skincare routine.

Natalia Grossman:

I honestly don’t really have a skin and hair routine! I only wash my hair once a week though… Maybe that’s the secret?

Namita Nayyar:

How do you train your abs? One secret to your toned body.

Natalia Grossman:

The last time I trained abs was over a year ago but I do think that climbing regularly has helped me stay in shape.

Namita Nayyar:

Five foods you absolutely love and five you keep to a minimum.

Natalia Grossman:

I love cereal, sushi, and eggs with toast, grapes, and yogurt bowls. There’s no food I avoid besides meat and really spicy things.

Namita Nayyar:

Five travel destinations on your wish list.

Natalia Grossman:

Korea, Maldives, Hawaii, Japan and Bali.
