Breastfeeding Helps Kids Climb Social Ladder

– Reported June 29, 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Breastfeeding your baby can raise their odds of moving up the social ladder by 24% as well as decrease their chances of downward mobility by about 20%, finds a recent study. This suggests that the developmental, behavioral, and health advantages of breastfeeding can last into adulthood.

Following a group of individuals born in 1958 and 1970, researchers recorded whether or not the participants were breastfed and their social class as children. The study also controlled for other factors which could influence the participants’ movement on the social ladder such as brain development and stress scores at ages 10 and 11. Researchers found that adults who were breastfed were consistently more likely to have climbed the social ladder.
