Diabetes on the Rise in the South?

– Reported December 20, 2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – A new report from the Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) states that almost 9 percent of the privately insured population in 2012 were diagnosed or had a high risk of diabetes.

Though, the rate of the disease depends on region of the country, gender, and age, more than a quarter of men aged 55 to 64 who live in the south have a higher risk.

“This is the first time we’ve used our repository of claims data to track the prevalence of chronic disease among the privately insured. While using claims data for public health surveillance purposes has some limitations, it provides a timely way to track emerging trends and can inform policymakers, providers, and patients alike,” David Newman, Executive Director of HCCI, was quoted as saying.
