Find the Right Personal Trainer

Find the Right Personal Trainer
Reported March 7, 2005

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) — You’ve set your goals, promised to get in shape and want to lose weight. A personal trainer can keep you on track, and finding the right one can make all the difference.

From the educator to the drill sergeant. Your trainer may be the key to your success. But what’s the benefit to one type of trainer over the other?

Boot camp trainers are intense. Workouts usually start before the sun comes up. “You’re just working out in the elements,” Boot Camp participant Renee Defeo says.

Defeo’s Drill Sergeant at Phoenix Adventure Boot Camp for Women, Tammy Kaatz, says, “They can expect definitely camaraderie, motivation, definitely motivation.” She says her workouts are for those who thrive in group settings and want to see quick results.

Results are also the motivation behind Mona Dunbar’s workouts at Bally Total Fitness in Chandler, Ariz. She uses positive reinforcement in the gym. “The trainer is there to say, ‘OK, you are going to A, B and C and D,’ and you know that you are going to have the most efficient use of your time,” Dunbar says. One good thing about training in the gym? Equipment, classes and personal trainers — all in one place.

But if a gym isn’t for you, trainers like fitness expert Scott Keppel offer their own private studios like Body By Scott in Tempe, Ariz. Keppel’s philosophy is to educate his clients. He says, “My goal is to help them reach their fitness goal, no matter what it is, and I feel the best way I can do that is by teaching them the why’s of what they’re doing.”

So, whether you’re in a studio, a gym or out in the elements, picking the right trainer in the right setting can help you reach your goals.

All three personal trainers stress one thing — working out is not enough. If you want real results, you need to change your lifestyle and your diet.
